BlackRock Center for the Arts will hold its annual gala on Friday, May 6 from 6:00pm–10:00pm. The gala theme is “An Evening of Wonder: Celebrating the Magic of the Arts at BlackRock.” In recent years, BlackRock has emerged as a noteworthy community asset, establishing Upper Montgomery County as a sought-after destination to live, work, and play, with its stellar performances, professional quality, and diverse offerings. Though it may seem the Center’s success happened overnight—like magic—it is instead a result of years of hard work and civic leadership in a forward-thinking community, one whose residents value the arts, their impact on the human spirit and their role in creating vibrant communities. Members of the public are invited to attend the event and celebrate the arts in Upper Montgomery County. Individual tickets to “An Evening of Wonder” cost $195 and can be purchased online at

The evening’s schedule for “An Evening of Wonder: Celebrating the Magic of the Arts at BlackRock” includes cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, a three-course dinner, live entertainment, fund-a-need, dessert, and an after-party with dancing. In addition, there will be an awards celebration honoring Therrien Waddell and Jean Casey for their outstanding dedication to the arts in our community. The gala is co-chaired by Jennifer Russel and Chester Anderson and this year’s Honorary Co-Chairs are the Honorable Isiah Leggett and Mrs. Catherine Leggett.

Calvary Women’s Services 15^th Annual Hope Awards Dinner

Calvary Women’s Services will host the 15^th Annual Hope Awards Dinner on May 18 in celebration of women who are overcoming homelessness and changing their lives. Join Calvary for an uplifting event that includes a cocktail reception, silent and live auction, dinner and inspirational stories shared by women who are impacted by Calvary’s programs. 

This year we are delighted to present the Hope Award to Erica May-Scherzer for her active engagement in nonprofit issues and causes including women’s empowerment, education and at-risk youth.

Proceeds from the Hope Awards Dinner will support Calvary’s housing, health, education and employment programs for women who are homeless.  

The renowned designer, Donna Karan is going to be in Washington, D.C.  on Tuesday, May 24^th – 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm for a ‘Conversation with Donna Karan’ at the Smithsonian to promote her memoir, My Journey. She’ll discuss her amazing 40 year career in fashion, as well as, the deeply personal experiences that lead to the creation of her philanthropic Urban Zen lifestyle brand and the Urban Zen Foundation.

Next month Ms. Karan will receive the CFDA’s Eleanor Lambert Founders Award in New York as an acknowledgement of her undeniable contribution to the fashion landscape, from successfully taking over the reins of the sportswear company, Anne Klein, after the death of its founder to her signature 7 easy pieces in 1985 that changed the way that women around the world dress, dressing former First Lady, Hillary Clinton, President Clinton, Barbra Streisand, Demi Moore, Jeremy Irons and more, to her current philanthropic projects in Haiti – this is a can’t miss opportunity to hear from one of the fashion world’s true icons.

Tigerlily Foundation is pleased to present the 4^th Annual Pajama Glam 2016, for women and girls of all ages to dress in their favorite pajamas and celebrate their “fabulousness”, while learning about health, wellness and prevention.  The 4^th Annual Pajama Glam 2016 event will take place Saturday, June 18th from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Hotel Monaco, 480 King Street, Alexandria, VA.  Guests will enjoy a glamorous line up of activities including a fashion show, yoga, zumba, dancing, pamper stations, glam stations, sweet treat stations, wellness activities, celebrity appearances and much more.   The event was originated by Noelle Karmo when she was 6 years old, and she envisioned an event to attract and educate young girls about their breast and body health, while raising awareness for younger women. This year, the event is hosted by Ashley Boalch Darby (from Bravo’s Real Housewives of Potomac) and Tati, Radio Host on WPGC 95.5! Also enjoy a special performance by 2KS (Yame & Journey)!

On July 29, 2016 at 6:30p.m. The Fashion Group International® of Greater Washington, DC, Inc. will present The Art of Buying with Ken Downing, Fashion Director & Senior VP of Neiman Marcus.

FGIDC Regional Director Elaine Mensah will lead an intimate discussion on the ins and outs of buying in the fashion industry with Ken Downing, the famed tastemaker who oversees women’s and men’s trends for Neiman Marcus, manages a team of fashion editors in the company’s New York office, and provides a vision for over 200 merchants on the season’s trends.

“Mr. Downing is widely recognized as one of the most influential personalities in fashion.  We are so honored to host him and bring his energy and multi-faceted knowledge of the fashion industry to our members and the Washington DC area fashion professionals interested in joining our organization,” said FGIDC Director Elaine Mensah.

Downing rose through the ranks of Neiman Marcus after starting with the company in 1990 in the Visual department of the Beverly Hills store.  His experience covers the worlds of visual display, public relations, buying and trend analysis.  Downing is a graduate of Seattle Central College and The Fashion Institute of Technology and has a degree in apparel design.

The event will be held at a location to be announced before the event on Friday, July 29, 2016 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and is open to all at $25 for FGI Members and $40 for non-members.  Downing has generously agreed to sit down with 4 FGI members & DC based designers for one-on-one discussion and collection review. On Saturday, September 17 from 8pm – 10pm, Shinola (1631 14th St NW) will partner with The Social Club Grooming Company to host an in-store ShopTalk event featuring great conversation and complimentary whiskey tastings from One Eight Distilling. Several panelists will share their business success stories while receiving haircuts from barbers of The Social Club.
