Celebrating its 10th year, Georgetown, DC’s Annual French Market will draw thousands of fashionistas, home design enthusiasts, foodies and families to play at the neighborhood’s unique, outdoor European-style market this spring. Hosted by the Georgetown BID, the signature open-air market will offer two days of incredible deals on unique fashion finds and trends, delicious French fare and family-friendly fun and entertainment on Friday and Saturday, April 19th & 20th, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
During French Market, shoppers will be able to score savings of up to 80 percent off designer goods, art and antique home furnishings at over 35 participating boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and galleries. With a thriving, unparalleled retail scene of over 450 merchants, and 26 new merchant openings in 2012, Georgetown is DC’s premier neighborhood for shopping.
Several of Book Hill’s best restaurants will nourish shoppers with traditional French fare such as street-side grilled merguez, sweet and savory crepes, homemade breads, pastries and more. The streets will also come alive with live music, while families can enjoy children’s activities throughout the marketplace.

Washington Project for the Arts will host the first poolside soiree of the season! The WPA SLEEPOUT pajama-jam will warm-up WPA’s new home at the Capitol Skyline Hotel, 10 I (Eye) Street SW, on Saturday, April 20 from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
SLEEPOUT will feature slumber party-themed performances, music, movies, art, and other participatory happenings.
“Bring a tent or sleeping bag, sport some stylish loungewear, and party under the stars with WPA,” said Executive Director Lisa Gold. “Come for part of the night or stay through breakfast the next morning…either way, we can’t wait to connect with the community in our new home.”
Tickets to SLEEPOUT include two drink tickets, in addition to s’mores and storytelling, late-night movie-screenings, nighttime traditions such as
karaoke with Jeremy Flick. DJ’s Patrick White and Sean Peoples of Fatback will spin funk and soul to get the party started, and artist Megan Blafas will set the slumber scene.

The group debuted their first album in 1960, when Knight was 16 years old, going on to achieve icon status with memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, Top 20 hits like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and the #1 smash “Midnight Train to Georgia.” Knight enjoyed another #1 hit in 1985 when she teamed with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dionne Warwick on “That’s What Friends are For.” Knight has recorded more than 40 albums over the course of her career.
Her involvement in other creative undertakings has been extensive. In 1986, she produced and starred in the Cable Ace Award-winning “Sisters in the Name of Love,” an HBO special co-starring Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle. That same year, she co-starred with Flip Wilson in the CBS comedy “Charlie & Co.” Other acting roles followed on such TV shows as “Benson,” “The Jefferson’s” and “New York Undercover,” and in such television films as “Pipe Dreams,” “An Enemy Among Us” and “Desperado.” She recorded the title theme for the James Bond movie License to Kill. In 1999, she completed a starring run on Broadway in the smash musical hit Smokey Joe’s Café.
In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame. What: The fourth annual Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival presented by Events DC, featuring seven bluegrass bands including The Hackensaw Boys and more. The festival will celebrate local music, food, and culture as well as the revitalization of the Anacostia River.
The Festival will include seven hours of performances by local bluegrass bands, DC’s favorite food trucks, Sierra Nevada beer, bike giveaways from BicycleSPACE and tours of the island, local music busking stages, and a children’s area with crafts and games.
“DC has many local treasures with a great cultural history. Kingman Island is one of our hidden environmental jewels and bluegrass owns a remarkable musical tradition in our city. This festival celebrates both.” – Ward 6 Council Member Timmy Wells.
Biking and metro are encouraged. A free shuttle will run from Stadium/Armory Metro Station. Free parking is available in RFK Lot 6.
Who: The Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival presented by Events DC, is a collaboration between Living Classrooms, Councilman Tommy Wells’ Office, BicycleSPACE, Listen Local First and media partner WAMU’s Bluegrass Country. All are welcome to attend.

On April 30, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, an advocate of equality and civil rights, will host a book release celebration for 2013 NAACP Image Award Nominee Author R. Kayeen Thomas, a Washington, DC native, whose novels build bridges between the experiences of African American slaves, the civil rights generation and today’s African American Culture. The Book Release event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Busboys and Poets, 2021 14th Street NW, Washington, DC, 20009. Enjoy a meet & greet, discussion, Q&A and booksigning. The event will celebrate Thomas’ upcoming release The Seven Days (Simon & Schuster, April 16) and also the success of Antebellum, which secured Thomas a 2013 Image Award nomination for Outstanding Debut Author.
“In Kayeen Thomas, our city has produced a prolific, young novelist and playwright just six years out of college and already author of three books,” said Norton. “The Banneker High School and Carleton College graduate brings the hip-hop sensibilities of his generation to his work with universal appeal.”

I have been searching for ways to reach out to my hometown, to let people in my community know that I exist and so this is really an answered prayer. The Seven Days is the prequel to the critically acclaimed Antebellum and tells the powerful story of what happens when a man in modern society is possessed with the spirits of dead slaves. Antebellum is about a rapper whose given name is Moses Jenkins, but his stage name is Da Nigga. Through a series of events, Moses is transported back into the antebellum slavery period and forced to experience slavery firsthand. He then returns to the present day, with all of his memories intact, and has to figure out how to continue to live his life in the context of what he went through as a slave. Light: Stories of Urban Resurrection,Thomas’ first book, is a compilation of short stories that dig deep into the heart of consciousness of the black and urban communities. It is available in e-book format.

The bipartisan favorite of both theatre and political fans, Will on the Hill returns to theShakespeare Theatre Company this spring. This year’s Will on the Hill is marked by a performance of Toil and Trouble, an original play by Peter Byrne written with assistance from The West Wing Writers Group. Will on the Hill will be directed by STC Associate Director Alan Paul and take place on Monday, May 6, 2013, in Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW). The evening begins with a VIP cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the performance at 7:30 p.m. and a buffet dinner immediately following the performance.
Will on the Hill welcomes Members of Congress, Senators and distinguished Washington insiders onto the Shakespeare Theatre Company stage to perform scenes from Shakespeare infused with comedic references to contemporary politics. The event pays tribute to the unique dynamic of our city and provides a wonderful way to engage new audiences. This year’s cast for Will on the Hill includes acclaimed actor and Creative Coalition member John Leguizamo, best known for roles in the feature films Romeo + Juliet,Moulin Rouge and Ice Age, among others. Anna Chlumsky, known for her performances in VEEP and In the Loop, will co-star with Leguizamo in this year’s event.
Toil and Trouble offers a hilarious look inside Washington media. In the Washington studios of a national news network, the staff is on high alert. The White House has announced that it will be delivering a major statement at any moment, but that’s all—no details, no hints. With nothing to go on, but plenty of air time to fill, two veteran anchors try to hold onto their audience (and their sanity) by bringing on a series of guests. Unfortunately, the only guests available are attending a Shakespearean costume ball, lending an improbably comic air to the proceedings.
