Washington Project for the Arts will host the first poolside soiree of the season! The WPA SLEEPOUT pajama-jam will warm-up WPA’s new home at the Capitol Skyline Hotel, 10 I (Eye) Street SW, on Saturday, April 20 from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
SLEEPOUT will feature slumber party-themed performances, music, movies, art, and other participatory happenings.
“Bring a tent or sleeping bag, sport some stylish loungewear, and party under the stars with WPA,” said Executive Director Lisa Gold. “Come for part of the night or stay through breakfast the next morning…either way, we can’t wait to connect with the community in our new home.”
Tickets to SLEEPOUT include two drink tickets, in addition to s’mores and storytelling, late-night movie-screenings, nighttime traditions such as
karaoke with Jeremy Flick. DJ’s Patrick White and Sean Peoples of Fatback will spin funk and soul to get the party started, and artist Megan Blafas will set the slumber scene.

The group debuted their first album in 1960, when Knight was 16 years old, going on to achieve icon status with memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, Top 20 hits like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and the #1 smash “Midnight Train to Georgia.” Knight enjoyed another #1 hit in 1985 when she teamed with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dionne Warwick on “That’s What Friends are For.” Knight has recorded more than 40 albums over the course of her career.
Her involvement in other creative undertakings has been extensive. In 1986, she produced and starred in the Cable Ace Award-winning “Sisters in the Name of Love,” an HBO special co-starring Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle. That same year, she co-starred with Flip Wilson in the CBS comedy “Charlie & Co.” Other acting roles followed on such TV shows as “Benson,” “The Jefferson’s” and “New York Undercover,” and in such television films as “Pipe Dreams,” “An Enemy Among Us” and “Desperado.” She recorded the title theme for the James Bond movie License to Kill. In 1999, she completed a starring run on Broadway in the smash musical hit Smokey Joe’s Café.
In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Knight published an autobiography, Between Each Line of Pain and Glory, in 1997, and the next year, she and The Pips were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. In 2004, Knight received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual BET Awards ceremony.

What: The fourth annual Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival presented by Events DC, featuring seven bluegrass bands including The Hackensaw Boys and more. The festival will celebrate local music, food, and culture as well as the revitalization of the Anacostia River.
The Festival will include seven hours of performances by local bluegrass bands, DC’s favorite food trucks, Sierra Nevada beer, bike giveaways from BicycleSPACE and tours of the island, local music busking stages, and a children’s area with crafts and games.
“DC has many local treasures with a great cultural history. Kingman Island is one of our hidden environmental jewels and bluegrass owns a remarkable musical tradition in our city. This festival celebrates both.” – Ward 6 Council Member Timmy Wells.
Biking and metro are encouraged. A free shuttle will run from Stadium/Armory Metro Station. Free parking is available in RFK Lot 6.
Who: The Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival presented by Events DC, is a collaboration between Living Classrooms, Councilman Tommy Wells’ Office, BicycleSPACE, Listen Local First and media partner WAMU’s Bluegrass Country. All are welcome to attend.

In the Experience Forest, general admission ticket-holders will enjoy a decidedly local flavor with a pop-up sweetgreen restaurant and various sweetgreen grab-and-go stands; delicious offerings from Toki Underground; D.C.’s most popular food trucks such as Pepe by Jose Andrés, Takorean, The Big Cheese, and Kushi Moto by Kushi Izakaya & Sushi; all things we love to eat from the Chesapeake Bay; locally sourced fruits and vegetables from nearby farms; delicious snacks from some of our favorite healthy purveyors; and local wine and beer on tap (see below for more detailed listings).
VIP:The festival’s VIP section will be divided into two exclusive areas: VIP Main and VIP Treehouse.
