This spring, The National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center known as the home to the Space Shuttle Discovery (among other incredible exhibits), will witness an unforgettable event – “Chopin. The Space Concert”. Chopin’s timeless music, the unique NASA Space footage taken during the 2010 STS-130 space mission, and the fascinating panel discussion, at the venue that embodies the past, the present, and the future of space exploration – a match made in… Space.

Chopin. The Space Concert features the music of Frédéric Chopin that reached Space thanks to an American astronaut of Polish origin – Col. George D. Zamka who was the commander of the STS-130 mission. In February 2010 he took a CD with the music of the great Polish composer on board of the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Chopin’s compositions were played during the installation of the seven-window dome, from which the astronauts had a view into Space for the first time. The observation dome, called the Cupola, is a seven-window observation portal making it the largest space window launched into orbit! And it has been a real game-changer. The footage of Chopin. The Space Concert is so breathtaking, thanks to the very existence of that Cupola.

The event will also give a unique opportunity to look into the history of space exploration by visiting the amazing exhibition at the center that includes, among others: the spacesuit worn by Neil Armstrong during the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in 1969 and a model of the Mars Rover Curiosity. The past, the present, and the future of space exploration during one exciting evening.

Amid a celebratory 25th-anniversary MainStage season, MET’s resident comedy troupe that started it all, Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) is thrilled to announce the glorious return of MET’s treasured annual fundraiser and the best party of the year, Retro Prom.

Retro Prom will feature the musical stylings of DJ Genius of Benefactor Events to dance the night away to, delicious food by The Savory Spoon, a gift card tree raffle, a silent auction, fun prom photos, a cash bar and a late night pizza party. This sell out event for guests 21 years and older will be held on Saturday, March 18th from 7:00PM – 11:00PM at the William Talley Recreation Center (121 N. Bentz St. Frederick, MD 21701) in Baker Park.

The roaring ‘20s is this year’s Retro Prom theme. Though it is not a requirement that party guests wear a themed outfit it is encouraged that guests dance the night away dressed for prom, all decades of attire welcomed. New to Retro Prom this year is online bidding, which will allow guests to bid from wherever they are on silent auction items, receive outbid notifications, and seamlessly check out at the end of the night. Raffle ticket purchases and donations may also be completed online.

Tickets or tables may be purchased online at www.marylandensemble.org, by phone at (301) 694-4744, or in person at the MET Box Office. Individual tickets are $50 each. Tables are available for guaranteed seating for 4, 8, 10, or 12 attendees. Costs for tables range from $240 – $720 with advanced registration. Tables include a sign with the party’s name, guaranteed seating, and a bottle of champagne on ice. There will also be standing high-top tables and limited non-table seating for those purchasing individual tickets only.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) who for over 25 years have been producing thought-provoking theatre, fun family entertainment, artist residency programs for public schools, challenging classes and side-splitting comedy. MET is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Bollywood Bistro is hosting its first annual Holi Festival Celebration on Sunday, March 19. The festivities will take place from 11 am – 2 pm, beginning with a celebratory buffet and Holi-themed cocktails at Bollywood Bistro.

The festival kit comes with everything you need to welcome spring in the tradition of the popular Indian Festival, including a “colors you can taste” buffet, colorful lights, colorful chalk, colorful smoke bombs and music.

Holi is known as “The Festival of Colors” in India and is a celebration of the victory of good over evil. The Fainting Goat’s Women’s History Month Cocktail Takeover with Catoctin Creek @ Fainting Goat Tavern

In celebration of Women’s History Month, U Street neighborhood tavern Fainting Goat and local VA craft distillery Catoctin Creek are coming together for a night of spirits tastings, specialty cocktails, raffle prizes, and a good cause.

On Thursday, March 23 from 6-9pm, they’re hosting a cocktail takeover featuring drinks created by some of the talented women behind the Goat’s bar, and $1 from each cocktail sold will be donated to the StepUp Foundation.

Cocktails will include bartender Toni Margai’s “Tropical Oasis” with Catoctin Rye, peach, falernum and lemon juice. Guests can also enjoy complimentary tastings of several spirits from Catoctin Creek, the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since before Prohibition, located in nearby Purcellville, Virginia. The award-winning craft distillery produces a variety of rye whiskeys made from local and organic grains, gins and fruit brandies.

In addition to the $1 per cocktail Fainting Goat will be donating for the evening, Catoctin Creek will also be donating $1 per cocktail posted on social media (tagging @catoctincreek with the hashtag #sipforequality). StepUp is a foundation who empowers women and underrepresented people by providing opportunities to enter the spirits community through a comprehensive internship program.

And attendees can go home with swag, as Catoctin Creek gives away raffle prizes throughout the night.

Eudora Welty Lecture Features Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout @ National Press Club

On Thursday, March 23 at 7:30 pm the Folger Shakespeare Library’s

O.B. Hardison Poetry Series presents the Eudora Welty Lecture with Pulitzer Prize-winning author

Elizabeth Strout (Olive Kitteridge, My Name is Lucy Barton) at the National Press Club. Sponsored

by the Eudora Welty Foundation, this annual lecture celebrates creative origins in the spirit of Welty’s

treasured One Writer’s Beginnings.

Ann Patchett (Bel Canto and The Dutch House), who presented the Lecture from Welty’s living room in

Jackson, Mississippi in 2022, will introduce Strout. The Lecture will be followed by a book signing with

Elizabeth Strout.

Previous Welty Lectures were delivered by Salman Rushdie in 2016, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in

Elizabeth Strout is widely known for her works in literary fiction and her descriptive characterization.

She was born and raised in Portland, Maine, and her experiences in her youth served as inspiration for

her novels—the fictional "Shirley Falls, Maine" is the setting of four of her seven novels. Strout's novels

include Amy and Isabelle, Abide with Me, Olive Kitteridge for which she won the Pulitzer Prize for

Fiction, The Burgess Boys, My Name Is Lucy Barton, Anything is Possible, Olive, Again, and Oh,

William!. Her latest book Lucy by the Sea was published in 2022.

Ann Patchett is the author of seven novels: The Patron Saint of Liars, Taft, The Magician’s

Assistant, Bel Canto, Run, State of Wonder, and Commonwealth. She has written three books of

nonfiction—Truth & Beauty, about her friendship with the writer Lucy Grealy; What Now?, an expansion

of her graduation address at Sarah Lawrence College; and This is the Story of a Happy Marriage, a

collection of essays examining the theme of commitment. In 2019, she published her first children’s

book, Lambslide.

National Kite-Flying Day is the perfect day for the National Cherry Blossom Festival to share all the ways attendees can “spring” on the fun of kite flying, including its signature Blossom Kite Festival, taking place Saturday, March 25, 2023 (10 a.m.–4:30 p.m.) at the Washington Monument Grounds. Presented by Hilton, National Cherry Blossom Festival’s proud Premier Hotel Provider, the Blossom Kite Festival is free, fun, and open to the public and features activities, music, competitions, and performances suitable for all ages.

The Blossom Kite Festival showcases kite performances and competitions, kite-making activities, a Family Field with children’s activities, and more. Tigerlily Foundation – Pajama Glam @ Hyatt Regency Tysons Corner

The Tigerlily Foundation today announce their signature Pajama Glam event will return on Sunday, March 26, 2023, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. The Reston-based, international nonprofit organization, which provides education, empowerment, advocacy, and hands-on support to young women between the ages of 15-45 before, during and after breast cancer, invites women and girls as young as five years old to learn the importance of breast health, and wellness, self-advocacy, risk reduction, and generational conversations, while dressed in their favorite red, pink, or purple pajamas.

Noelle Karmo, daughter of Tigerlily Foundation Founder & CEO, Maimah Karmo created the theme for the event in 2010 to attract and educate young girls about their breasts, body, and health. “When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was confusing because I was so young, but there is so much I learned through her experience,” said Noelle Karmo. “There was a lot that many of my friends didn’t understand, so I wanted to create an event for kids. I’m excited to see it grow.

 

“It is so important for families to have the discussion about health,” said Maimah Karmo. “This event is building a foundation for a safe space to start these conversations that must be had early and often. My mother educated me about my breath health and taught me breast self-exams at an early age, which led to me finding my own lump during a self-examination and advocating for myself. I want to ensure other young women have that gift of education. Education and awareness require learning young.”

 

This year’s dress code is chic and stylish pajamas paired with mandatory “bling” accessories to accentuate the glam and sparkle theme. Attendees will enjoy a glamorous lineup of entertainment and activities such as walking the pink carpet, achieving a Passport to a Healthy Lifestyle through creative crafts and activities, 3D Photobooth, local makers, face painters, balloon twisters, live music, and Zumba demonstrations. Guests can also indulge in a decadent candy bar, popcorn station, petit sandwiches, fruit kabobs, and fabulous mocktails. Come meet local Pageant Representatives and enjoy a special movie screening of “Oh, Baby, Baby” co-written by Maimah Karmo and Maggy Francois and produced as part of BET Her Presents: The Waiting Room TV series. The movie a powerful story which explores Black women’s health and fertility. Nationals Homecoming Gala Red Carpet/Watch Party @ The Anthem

The Washington Nationals and Washington Nationals Philanthropies invite fans to attend the red carpet arrivals prior to the 2023 Nationals Homecoming Gala, held Tuesday, March 28, at The Anthem located at The Wharf (901 Wharf St. SW). The Nationals Homecoming Gala is the team’s premier off-the-field event and annual fundraiser for Nationals Philanthropies. This year, the event will honor Ryan Zimmerman with the Power of Baseball Award.

On Tuesday, Nationals players, coaches and front office executives will come together with partners and supporters to celebrate the excitement of a new baseball season.
