“First Spouses” Exhibit Opening Ceremony @ Embassy of the Czech Republic

The Embassy of the Czech Republic, in collaboration with Diplomacy & Fashion, invites you to the opening of the portrait exhibition First Spouses by Miguel “M.i.G.” Martinez, highlighting the first spouses of the European Union’s Ambassadors to the United States of America, at the Embassy of the Czech Republic on August 30, 2022, from 12 noon to 2:30 pm.

The exhibition focuses on the men and women, who through great personal sacrifices of their own, bear enormous public responsibility in their own right. Albeit their work is not always visible at first sight, they ardently represent their respective nations.

The exhibition will open during the reception for the commencement of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

About the Photographer
Miguel “M.i.G.” Martinez, originally from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is an Emmy winner and Grammy-nominated producer, film director and international photographer. In 2007, he relocated to the DC area and began his filmmaking career. In 2010, he won the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Award from the Tribeca Film Institute. In 2016, he premiered his award-winning documentary 
Farewell Ferris Wheel at the AFI Docs film festival. That same year, he was invited to The White House to speak about the film.  In October 2017, Farewell Ferris Wheel made its television debut on PBS. In April 2018, the documentary started streaming on Netflix and that same year the film was nominated at the 33rd Imagen Award for Best Documentary and the 39th News & Documentary Emmy Award.

Currently, Miguel has a production company called Aster Creative Co. that he started with his business partner Jamie Sisley. In less than a year, the pair won an Emmy. They have worked with such companies as Sony, HBO, PBS, The Smithsonian, Kennedy Center, among many others.

A celebration of culture, fashion, history, and diplomacy with a special, first-ever event featuring international fashion designers who dressed First Ladies and First Gentlemen from all over the world…

Diplomacy and Fashion is putting Washington DC on the map as a First Ladies fashion hub in one of the most influential cities in the world. As the most prestigious non-partisan fashion event in Washington DC, First Fashion Gala showcases 40 designers who have dressed First Ladies, First Gentlemen, Kings, and Queens from around the world. We are thrilled to include a retrospective exhibit with pieces from Former First Lady Laura Bush, Edith Wilson, and Former Empress Farah Pahlavi to name a few. 

First Fashion Gala is a premier Black Tie Event chaired by Anne Simonian Totah that funds scholarships for low-income or single-parent students who want to study diplomacy or fashion in the nation or abroad. In addition, proceeds will go towards the goal of creating diplomacy and fashion courses in undergraduate programs nationwide.

The DC-Metro Modern Home Tour returns Saturday, November 12th! We are back IN-PERSON for the first time since 2019. And this year is quite the year: all our participants are showing their own homes. This year, visitors will get a very unique look into the homes of the architects, designers, and builders that created them.

WHAT: 2022 DC-Metro Modern Home Tour (5th tour!)

WHEN: Saturday, November 12, 2022 – 10AM to 4PM

WHO: (hosts, organizers) Modern Architecture + Design Society; (local partner/sponsor) listModern; (participating architects) BLD.US, Paola One Design, Sagatov Design+Build, AV Architects + Builders, and A2 Design Inc.

SPECIAL NOTE: All homes featured this year are residences of the architects, designers, and builders themselves!

SUMMARY: After a long pause on in-person events, the MA+DS tours are back for 2022! The DC-Metro community is invited to come and explore the inside of some of the area’s most spectacular Modern homes once again. Architects, designers, and builders will be on site and ready to talk about their work with visitors. Tickets will be limited. A special “last house” with champaign reception will be hosted by listModern!

Eudora Welty Lecture Features Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout @ National Press Club

On Thursday, March 23 at 7:30 pm the Folger Shakespeare Library’s

O.B. Hardison Poetry Series presents the Eudora Welty Lecture with Pulitzer Prize-winning author

Elizabeth Strout (Olive Kitteridge, My Name is Lucy Barton) at the National Press Club. Sponsored

by the Eudora Welty Foundation, this annual lecture celebrates creative origins in the spirit of Welty’s

treasured One Writer’s Beginnings.

Ann Patchett (Bel Canto and The Dutch House), who presented the Lecture from Welty’s living room in

Jackson, Mississippi in 2022, will introduce Strout. The Lecture will be followed by a book signing with

Elizabeth Strout.

Previous Welty Lectures were delivered by Salman Rushdie in 2016, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in

2017, Richard Ford in 2018, Jesmyn Ward in 2019, and Ann Patchett in 2022.

Elizabeth Strout is widely known for her works in literary fiction and her descriptive characterization.

She was born and raised in Portland, Maine, and her experiences in her youth served as inspiration for

her novels—the fictional "Shirley Falls, Maine" is the setting of four of her seven novels. Strout's novels

include Amy and Isabelle, Abide with Me, Olive Kitteridge for which she won the Pulitzer Prize for

Fiction, The Burgess Boys, My Name Is Lucy Barton, Anything is Possible, Olive, Again, and Oh,

William!. Her latest book Lucy by the Sea was published in 2022.

Ann Patchett is the author of seven novels: The Patron Saint of Liars, Taft, The Magician’s

Assistant, Bel Canto, Run, State of Wonder, and Commonwealth. She has written three books of

nonfiction—Truth & Beauty, about her friendship with the writer Lucy Grealy; What Now?, an expansion

of her graduation address at Sarah Lawrence College; and This is the Story of a Happy Marriage, a

collection of essays examining the theme of commitment. In 2019, she published her first children’s

book, Lambslide.

2023 Capital Art Book Fair @ Eastern Market North Hall

The first edition of East City Art’s Capital Art Book Fair takes place at Eastern Market’s North Hall.  The event is open to the public, free of charge.

Over 30 exhibitors from across the DMV, the US, Canada and Mexico will present books as works of art, editions about art or artists, limited run books, prints as well as DIY zines, graphic novels and art magazines.  Exhibitors include fine artists, independent publishers, small presses, illustrators and photographers.

East City Art partnered with nearby Capitol Hill Arts Workshop and Hill Center to co-locate offsite programming during the fair.  Programming includes a panel discussion on art publishing, exhibitions and a free children’s art workshop.

DC-based, award-winning artist Carolina Mayorga will create ephemeral, site-specific work using hand-cut vinyl pieces for the 2023 Capital Art Book Fair in Eastern Market’s North Hall.
