WASHINGTON – DC – May 15, 2019 – On Wednesday, June 19th, Juniper Restaurant, at Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown, will serve a very special pre-fixe dinner at 6:00 p.m.  Five students from Horton’s Kids* spent time this winter with the hotel’s culinary team learning cooking skills.  In celebration of their graduation, they are taking their talents to the next level, by assisting Executive Chef Jordi Gallardo and Sous Chef Mitch Eldridge with meal preparation for Juniper Restaurant’s Horton’s Kids Dinner.  Juniper will donate 25% of the proceeds from the pre-fixe dinners directly to Horton’s Kids.

VIDA Fitness Fashion Show to benefit N Street Village @ VIDA Fitness

VIDA Fitness will host its second annual VIDA Fitness Fashion Show on June 19 to benefit N Street Village, the largest service provider for homeless and at risk women in Washington D.C.  The event will be hosted by Drag Queen Ba’Naka Deveraux, actress, performer and five time winner of D.C.’s Best Drag Queen Award. Bonobos and Modcloth clothing will provide a spectacular selection of evening and swim wear worn by VIDA Fitness models.

The event’s goal is to raise a minimum of $10k for N Street Village, who welcomes approximately 200,000 homeless and low income women each year. VIDA Fitness employees have volunteered to model and Bang Salon will transform them from personal trainers to high-fashion runway models with their talented hair and makeup stylist. Bonobos will dress the men in stylish evening attire and trendy swimsuits, while Modcloth outfits the ladies in stunning evening wear and sexy bathing suits. Ba’Naka Deveraux will host and emcee the evening of glamor showcasing each outfit and model while engaging the audience with her cutting wit and charm.

The Fashion Show, a ticketed event, will also offer a variety of exciting raffle items. All funds raised will be donated directly to N Street Village.

After the models have tripped the light fantastic on the catwalk Ba’Naka will entertain guests with an exclusive performance that is sure to dazzle and shine.

Join in for the third annual DC Art Book Fair!

This curated, kid-friendly event in NMWA’s Great Hall brings together small presses, artists and more to sell their independently published (largely paper-based) works. More than 40 artists will be selling creations from zines to books, from comics to prints, and plenty in between.

This event is organized by the DC Art Book Collective, and the participants are chosen by a panel of judges: Nguyên Khôi Nguyễn, artist and educator based in Baltimore; Christopher Kardambikis, assistant professor in printmaking at George Mason University; Malaka Gharib, artist and writer based in Washington; Alison Michael Baitz, graduate student in library science and children’s literature at Simmons University; LA Johnson, artist, illustrator and creative director at NPR; Elizabeth Graeber, illustrator based in Washington; and Lynora Williams, Director of the Library and Research Center at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Grand African Run @ Yards Park

The inaugural Grand Africa Run, a mass-participation road race organized by the nonprofit Nova Connections, under the auspices of the African Union and in partnership with the DC Mayor’s Office on African Affairs, is set to take place on Saturday, July 21st during African Week celebrations in the nation’s capital.
The event is comprised of a main 5K race, as well as a 1K run for children 11 years of age and under. Organizers expect thousands of runners to take part, running along a scenic course by the Anacostia River, with the race starting and finishing at the Yards Park in D.C. Officials also expect a number of top African athletes to attend as guests and as participants in the event.

DC VegFest @ Nationals Park

 Compassion Over Killing (COK) is proud to present the DC VegFest on Sunday, August 11 in a brand new location: Nationals Park! The DC VegFest is a free fun-filled festival of food, music, education, and inspiration with more than 20,000 attendees who join the celebration each year.   

Featuring over 120 vendors and exhibitors, thousands of festival-goers – vegans and pre-vegans alike – will experience plant-based eating’s many flavors, and learn how each of us can protect the planet, our health, and animals simply by enjoying vegan meals. 

On the main stage, emceed by DC comedian Sean Savoy, celebrity speakers will share inspiring talks and expert chefs will dazzle the crowd with their culinary creations. 

This year’s DC VegFest keynote speakers include:

  • Tracye McQuirter, author of By Any Greens Necessary
  • Neil Barnard, author and founding president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
  • Brenda Sanders, food activist and Executive Director of Afro-Vegan Society
  • Plus, cooking demos from Joe Yonan of the Washington Post, and plant-based chef Bev Kumari

A new TryVeg Tasting Booth will be hosted by Jessica Carter, COK’s talented Vegan Food & Lifestyle Coach, seen often on DC morning shows. The Kid’s Zone includes a built in playground plus we’ll be featuring activities like face painting, and an interactive cartooning demonstration with Eric Lindstrom, COK’s Director of Marketing.

Since 2009, DC VegFest has been bringing the community together for a day of compassionate celebration that everyone can enjoy. Arena Stage Community Day and Props Sale @ Arena Stage

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater kicks off the 2019/20 Season with a free Community Day and Props Sale on Saturday, August 24, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mead Center (1101 Sixth Street, SW). The day will feature an Arena Stage Prop Sale with beautiful pieces from Arena Stage productions up for sale; performances from award nominated tap dancer Leo Manzari (Arena Stage’s Sophisticated LadiesTappin Thru Life and Hoizer’s music video for “Almost (Sweet Music)”); and a behind-the-scenes Q&A with our Arena Stage Production Team to discuss some of Arena’s most exciting productions!

Filled with activities for all ages, this full day of programming celebrates Arena Stage’s 2019/20 Season. Feel the rhythm of Southwest D.C. through dynamic, live music, face painting, storytelling, great food, pony rides and dance performances that reflect the sounds and themes of the upcoming Arena Stage season. Traditional and contemporary Cuban rhythms will be brought to life by the DC Cuban All-Stars; the jazz, blues and soul vocalist Akua Allrich will give audiences a feel for the music in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars; and the DC Casineros Dance Company will offer classes and performances that can make anyone a dancer. Community Day is FREE and open to the public. Other scheduled activities include live music from Americana band Justin Trawick and the Common Good; fantastic aerial performances from Wings Aerial Entertainment; music by trumpeter, singer and lyricist Jared “MK Zulu” Bailey; face painting; and great food from restaurants in Southwest D.C. including Masala Art and Station 4.

Arena Stage’s Props Sale beginning at 1 p.m., features select prop items from historic productions including Carousel, Anything Goes, South Pacific, Kleptocracy, Disgraced, Smart People, Mother Courage and Junk. Items range from $1-$900 and include full dining room table sets, lounge chairs, and specially-priced handmade prop and set pieces that will be perfect in any living or office space. Both cash and credit cards are accepted.

Beginning at 2 p.m. Arena’s Grape Stand will open. This wine and beer garden will offer guests 21 and over the opportunity to relax on Arena’s terrace with a glass of wine or a cold beer while playing a variety of lawn games.

Hay Adams Author Series: Unsheltered @ Hay Adams

On Friday, August 30, the award-winning Hay-Adams, located steps from the White House at 800 16th Street, NW, 20006, will host its next Author Series luncheon honoring Barbara Kingsolver to discuss her latest work, Unsheltered. Barbara Kingsolver was born and grew up in rural Kentucky. She earned degrees in biology from DePauw University and the University of Arizona and has worked as a freelance writer and author since 1985. She has two daughters, Camille and Lily. Her husband, Steven Hopp, teaches environmental studies. At various times in her adult life, she has lived in England, France, and the Canary Islands, and has worked in Europe, Africa, Asia, Mexico, and South America. Kingsolver spent two decades in Tucson, Arizona, before moving to southwestern Virginia. She currently resides on a farm in southern Appalachia, where she and her family raise an extensive vegetable garden and Icelandic sheep.
