Union Market District Has Its First Brewery — Crooked Run Fermentation (and Pizza Serata)

Those of you practicing dry January can at least appreciate cozy comfort food season, so you’ll all want to know about the newest place to open in the Union Market District.

Crooked Run Fermentation has a new collaborative concept with Pizza Serata (the brainchild of Chef Chris Morgan from such Michelin-starred spots as Bammy’s and Little Chicken, and nationally-acclaimed “Pizza Czar” Anthony Falco.)

You can expect a wide variety of sips from this Virginia-based producer of contemporary and traditional beers at this first brewery in the Union Market District. The menu has enough interesting brews, sours, natural wines, ciders, and fruity seltzers to keep you coming back… but the lager on draft is always a sound choice.

Much is being touted about the location’s own exclusive beer — the Alora. K Street Mag can vouch that the dry, hoppy, Italian pilsner does pair well with pizza.

Speaking of pizza… Pizza Serata’s artisanal 9-inch personal pan pizzas are bread-forward.  The same dough is used for the Italian sandwiches on the menu, so anticipate a focaccia-like crunchy deep dish with sparser toppings than you might find elsewhere. Still, the flavors are strong and the pizzas are filling.

Our suggestion? Pair any pizza or sandwich with a salad. The Italian Chop Salad was actually a highlight of the dining experience!

Note: Crooked Run and Pizza Serata at Union Market District is located at 550 Morse St NE. It’s easy to find… once you’ve been there once and know where it is… but a sandwich board on the sidewalk might help. Look for it next to the newest residential building on the OTHER side of the parking lot from Union Market itself.
