The World Beer Cup, presented by the Brewers Association, is lauded to be the most prestigious beer competition in the world recognizing the art and science of brewing — and a DC stout just won the top prize.

Atlas Brew Works‘ Silent Neighbor won gold in the Export Stout category at the World Beer Cup, which was announced on Wednesday, May 10. Silent Neighbor was named in homage to the historic Mount Olivet Cemetery, across from Atlas’ flagship Ivy City location.

The World Beer Cup recognizes brewing excellence in 103 categories but does not automatically award the top three entries in a particular category. A panel of 272 judges evaluated 10,213 entries from 2,376 breweries representing 51 countries.

According to Atlas, Silent Neighbor has 6.7% ABV and is made with generous portions of rye and blackstrap molasses, and opens with notes of rye, chocolate, and roasted barley blended with rich molasses and subtle fruity bitterness.
