Love Letters – and Line Drives – for Literacy

Congressman Joe Barton

Congressmen Joe Barton (R-TX) and Mike Doyle (D-PA) were honored with the Champions for Literacy Award Tuesday evening at the Washington Literacy Council’s annual Love Letters for Literacy fundraiser.

Between readings from local literacy advocates and notable media and political personalities, the Representatives were feted for their commitment to the cause.  Under their leadership over the last four years, the Congressional Baseball Game for Charity had distributed almost $400,000 to causes -including the Council’s adult literacy efforts.

“I think we picked the Washington Literacy Council as our charity because most of the country thinks that Congress can’t read,” joked Barton.  “But we’re really proud to help in this effort.  It’s not just about reading, it’s about becoming a better citizen… “
