Public service and community activism came together earlier this month at the 5th Anniversary of Future Civic Leaders — a DC based, non-profit organization that engages high school students from low-income communities in the political process by hosting free leadership and community organizing conferences.

His Excellency Jean-Louis Wolzfeld, the Ambassador of Luxembourg, hosted guests at the country’s historic Embassy in Dupont Circle, inviting them to sip on wines from Luxembourg (plus specialty top shelf cocktails prepared by Rhum Clement and Peroni Beer) and tasting passed offerings made by the Embassy Chef.  A Jazz trio provided contemporary — and classic — ambience.

“This event is not only a celebration of the work that Future Civic Leaders has accomplished over the last five years, but of the political community here in Washington that has lifted up the stories of the civically disenfranchised,” said John McCarthy, Executive Director of Future Civic Leaders.  “We believe that Democracy works best when everyone is at the table.”

Supporters also had the opportunity to hear from Sarmat Chowdhury, an alumni of the inaugural Future Civic Leaders conference. “Future Civic Leaders taught me that money was not a barrier; color was not a barrier; and age was not a barrier to becoming involved in the betterment of my community, both by verbatim and action.”
