The Embassy of the Czech Republic, in collaboration with Diplomacy & Fashion, invites you to the opening of the portrait exhibition First Spouses by Miguel “M.i.G.” Martinez, highlighting the first spouses of the European Union’s Ambassadors to the United States of America, at the Embassy of the Czech Republic on August 30, 2022, from 12 noon to 2:30 pm.
The exhibition focuses on the men and women, who through great personal sacrifices of their own, bear enormous public responsibility in their own right. Albeit their work is not always visible at first sight, they ardently represent their respective nations.
The exhibition will open during the reception for the commencement of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

About the Photographer
Miguel “M.i.G.” Martinez, originally from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is an Emmy winner and Grammy-nominated producer, film director and international photographer. In 2007, he relocated to the DC area and began his filmmaking career. In 2010, he won the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Award from the Tribeca Film Institute. In 2016, he premiered his award-winning documentary Farewell Ferris Wheel at the AFI Docs film festival. That same year, he was invited to The White House to speak about the film. In October 2017, Farewell Ferris Wheel made its television debut on PBS. In April 2018, the documentary started streaming on Netflix and that same year the film was nominated at the 33rd Imagen Award for Best Documentary and the 39th News & Documentary Emmy Award.
Currently, Miguel has a production company called Aster Creative Co. that he started with his business partner Jamie Sisley. In less than a year, the pair won an Emmy. They have worked with such companies as Sony, HBO, PBS, The Smithsonian, Kennedy Center, among many others.

CapitalBop today announced that NEXTfest, D.C.’s largest fully free celebration of jazz, funk and go-go music culture, will return to Meridian Hill on Saturday, Sep. 24, for a full day of performances featuring an all-star lineup.
The festival will run from noon to 9 p.m., and it will be free and open to the public. The event will again be co-produced by Long Live GoGo and Washington Parks & People, and it features leading names in music from the DMV — and beyond.
NEXTfest 2022 will also include a full second day of cultural programming on Sunday, Sep. 25, with educational events, workshops, panel discussions, cultural conversations and additional live sets. This will take place both indoors and outdoors at the Josephine Butler Parks Center, across the street from the Park. (These events will be seamlessly integrated with the weekly Friends of Malcolm X Park Drum Circle, which will be taking place as usual at the park on Sunday afternoon.) Oktoberfest is back and better than ever with a free one-day community festival in the heart of National Landing. On Saturday, October 1 from 12 to 4 PM join the National Landing BID for an afternoon of games, crisp German Lagers and a live performance by the Alte Kumpel Band. Food and drinks, including beer and cider, are available for purchase throughout the celebration. Registered guest’s first beer will come with a complimentary stein while supplies last. Diplomacy and Fashion is putting Washington DC on the map as a First Ladies fashion hub in one of the most influential cities in the world. As the most prestigious non-partisan fashion event in Washington DC, First Fashion Gala showcases 40 designers who have dressed First Ladies, First Gentlemen, Kings, and Queens from around the world. We are thrilled to include a retrospective exhibit with pieces from Former First Lady Laura Bush, Edith Wilson, and Former Empress Farah Pahlavi to name a few.
First Fashion Gala is a premier Black Tie Event chaired by Anne Simonian Totah that funds scholarships for low-income or single-parent students who want to study diplomacy or fashion in the nation or abroad. In addition, proceeds will go towards the goal of creating diplomacy and fashion courses in undergraduate programs nationwide.

Events DC continues the first-ever International City Food Festival with Taste of Oktoberfest on Friday, October 14 in Franklin Park (1332 I Street NW). The iconic Oktoberfest is a world-renowned German folk festival held annually in Munich, attracting more than six million people from around the world. Revelers flock to Bavaria in search of German beer, music and food. To honor and celebrate this long-standing tradition, Events DC has partnered with the German-American Heritage Foundation and the German Embassy to bring a truly authentic taste of the legendary festivities to DC.
The one-of-a-kind experience will feature food and drink from local German eateries as well as entertainment curated by the German Embassy. Attendees will enjoy a full Bavarian market offering everything from traditional Lebkuchen (gingerbread hearts), spiced nuts, and Kirchmayer Chocolates, as well as a range of German meats and sausages, strudels, pretzels and packaged foods. Entertainers will take the stage, including traditional Bavarian dancing (Schuhplatteln), and music (Alphorns and cowbells). Each Taste of Oktoberfest ticket includes a complimentary beer for attendees 21+ (ID required), and access to the Oktoberfest Market featuring a selection of beers, foods and goods.
