Romanian Weekend at the Wharf @ Wharf District Pier
Jul 9 @ 8:00 AM – 11:00 PM

The Romanian Embassy to the US, The Romanian Cultural Institute, New York, and Maramures County Council with the support of Banca Transilvania/Transylvania Bank, invite you to experience the best of Romania at the Romanian Weekend at the Wharf, on Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10.

Enjoy live concerts, learn traditional crafts, listen to spoken word performances, and try delicious Romanian food and wine.

The Romanian Weekend at The Wharf is part of a months-long series of celebrations dedicated to the
25th anniversary of the Romania-United States Strategic Partnership, and it is a unique opportunity for
people to get acquainted with both modern and traditional Romania.

The event, which kicks off at noon on Saturday at The Wharf’s District Pier, will feature various musical,
artistic and culinary attractions from Romania’s culturally rich Maramureş region (Northwestern Romania, at the border with Ukraine).

Each day of the weekend will bring concerts by extraordinary Romanian musical artists: the Techno
Witches, a rap group, brilliantly repackaging Roma culture into a modern sound, with lyrics that touch on
social justice, witchcraft, technology, feminism, love, and other themes; Corina Sîrghi & Taraful Jean
Americanu – an all-acoustic ensemble of virtuoso musicians performing both traditional and popular
urban folklore pieces; and Ana Everling Trio, an act fusing Eastern European music with Brazilian and
Afro-influenced rhythms, courtesy of master guitarist Edinho Gerber and percussionist Luiz Everling.
Kicking off the weekend, the Transylvania National Folk Ensemble will create an immersive experience
through main-stage music and dance performances, as well as interactive demonstrations of dance,
traditional garb and crafts in the nearby tents. The event will also feature the DC-based, all-volunteer
Carpathia Folk Dance ensemble. Spoken word performances by well-known Romanian-American
authors Cristina A. Bejan, Domnica Radulescu, Elena Secota and Adela Sinclair will be interspersed
throughout the program.

Throughout the weekend, attendees will also have the opportunity to visit activity tents: “Dancing at the
Barn” for dance workshops, “The Potter's House” for pottery demonstrations with master potter Daniel Les, “Our Story Carved in Wood” for wood carving demonstrations with sculptor Petrică Codrea and
“Does Tradition Fit You”, an interactive folk costume exhibition where visitors can try the intricate
traditional costumes themselves. Other fun activities include the “Romanian Literature in America” booth
for book lovers; the “Gateway to Romanian traditions” booth to learn about ethno-tourism opportunities in
Maramureș; the “Maramureș Photo Booth” for fun selfies; and last but not least, “The Taste of Romania”
tent with a selection of Romanian food and wines to try and buy.

Romanian Weekend at The Wharf is organized by the Embassy of Romania to the United States and the
Romanian Cultural Institute in New York together with the Maramures County Council and The Wharf,
with the generous support of Banca Transilvania/Transylvania Bank.

The entry is free. For more information and the detailed schedule go to: https://bit.ly/3xYkW0w

Harvey’s Neighborhood “Battle of Broad Street” @ Harvey's
Jul 20 @ 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM
The event is taking place on Wednesday July 20, 2022, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
WHERE: Harvey’s, located in downtown Falls Church, VA, at 513 W. Broad Street, 22046
WHAT: Harvey’s will be donating 10% of the total sales raised on this special evening to the Falls Church Education Foundation. The Neighborhood Barbershop crew and Fin of Mister Finster’s Tattoo Studio will be preparing four food items for sale during the event, each priced at $10 per serving. The three barber contenders will compete for the bestselling dish of the day with the following selections: Dustin’s – Beyond Beef Kofta, Pickled Pineapple Bacon, Chili Sauce; Jay’s – Bacon Wrapped Poblano Pepper stuffed with Chicken Andouille Sausage, corn and Pimiento Cheese and Will’s – Beef stuffed with Harvey’s Mac and Cheese Sauce, rolled in Chiccarones and Barber Sauce. Fin of Finster’s is meeting the food challenge with Fin’s English Roast, Yorkshire pudding and Brown Gravy.
The three battling barbers and tattoo artist have agreed to this friendly competition. The dish that proves to be most popular among the public, selling out first, will become a featured item on Harvey’s menu for one month. The choice dish will continue the fundraising effort. $1 from the sale of each serving of the winning dish at Harvey’s will benefit the Falls Church Education Foundation (FCEF), culminating the end of August, with the gift attributed in the winner’s name. The losing participant, who created the dish that had the least sales on July 20, will receive a replica of the winning dish, in the form of a new permanent tattoo, courtesy of Mister Finster’s Tattoo Studio. The tattoo designs, representing the four competition dishes, will be on display on July 20, over the grill for all to see, to assist with the tally reveal.
Audacious Aleworks and Metro Cellars will be on site pouring selections to pair with each dish. Prices for the featured beverages of this fun-filled evening range from $8-$12 a drink.
“It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to collaborate with our gracious neighbors to give back to the community we serve,” explains Thomas Harvey, the owner and chef of Harvey’s. “We are blessed to have an expansive patio and vibrant partners who enjoy a bit of artistic and friendly competition for a worthy cause. It is exciting to be a part of small businesses in Falls Church who are coming together to assist with the future of this dynamic area. This was an easy decision for us. Any way we can help our community through education is a win for everyone.”
WHY: Falls Church Education Foundation was founded on a commitment to quality education, and that commitment creates a strong bond amongst citizens, teachers, elected officials, and businesses in our little city. The Falls Church Education Foundation (FCEF) was created in 2004 as a 501(c)3 to raise, manage and distribute supplemental funds to enhance the educational experience of Falls Church City Public School (FCCPS) students.
In the 2020-21 academic school year, FCEF awarded over $300,000 in funds to our FCCPS students and staff. Giving is aligned with the FCCPS three pillars: equity of access, staff readiness and preparing students to function in the 21st century. The mission of the FCEF is to support Falls Church City Public Schools by ensuring equity of access, staff readiness, and student preparedness for the 21st century.
Harvey’s is in downtown Falls Church at 513 W. Broad Street, 20046. The restaurant is located 1.3 miles from the West Falls Church metro and 1.8 miles from the East Falls Church metro accessible on the silver and orange lines. For additional information, please call (540) 268-6100 or visit https://harveysva.com.
