In Dialogue: Smithsonian Objects and Social Justice

Thursday, May 13, 5 p.m.

Online via Zoom

Heighten your civic awareness through conversations about art, history and material culture. Each month, educators from the National Portrait Gallery will partner with colleagues from across the Smithsonian to discuss how historical objects from their respective collections speak to today’s social justice issues. Why is it important to have agency in how we are portrayed?  Together with our co-hosts from the Freer and Sackler, Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, we will explore this key question about representation in relationship to a 1937 photograph of actress Anna May Wong and an early 21st century photo-performance by Pushpamala N. Free—Registration required.

WHO: Van Metre Companies Foundation, will host the event at Lost Rhino Brewing Company, a craft beer destination in Ashburn, VA to raise money for The Children’s Science Center, HomeAid Northern Virginia and Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation.

WHERE: 21730 Red Rum Drive, Suite #142, Ashburn, VA 20147

WHY: The Cornhole Challenge has raised more than $500,000 for local non-profits doing great work in our community. That commitment to the communities where they live and work is an essential part of what makes Van Metre who they are. That’s why this year’s Cornhole Challenge focuses on non-profit initiatives helping to educate young minds, shelter the homeless, and care for the needs of children in our community.

ABOUT THE GAME:

It is recommended that each competing team raises at least $300. The format of the tournament—King’s Court—encourages the highest levels of fundraising. The more money a team raises, the closer their starting place to the King’s Court and the higher their chances of winning the tournament.
