Night Market and Three-Course Chinese New Year Dinner @ The Source by Wolfgang Puck
Feb 27 @ 6:30 PM – 11:30 PM

Night Market and Three-Course Chinese New Year Dinner

For guests interested in a sit-down dinner to celebrate Chinese New Year, Chef Smith has created a three-course menu that begins with a Whole Steamed Bronzino, representing family togetherness, made with aged soy, fermented black bean, and chili oil. The second course, representative of the five blessings of the New Year including longevityriches, peacewisdom, and virtue, is Whole Soy Lacquered Quail with mustard greens and long wheat noodles. The final course features Chocolate Mochi Cake with tangerine marmalade, which was chosen because the pronunciation of the word “tangerine” sounds much like the pronunciation of the word “money” in Mandarin. Before dinner, guests will have the opportunity to indulge in four live-action stations featuring Whole Roasted Lamb with Steamed Bao BunsChinese New Year Chicken PotageKanpachi Yu Sheng Sashimi, and Chinese New Year Pork Dumplings. The menu is priced at $85 per person with an additional $35 per guest for an optional wine pairing. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the Source’s upstairs dining room. Reservations can be made by phone at 202-637-6100.

Cathedral Choral Society: Solitude & Joy @ Washington National Cathedral
Mar 4 @ 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM

The Cathedral Choral Society continues its 2017.18 season with
Solitude and Joy on Sunday, March 4, 4:00 pm at Washington National Cathedral.
Guest conductor Donald Nally leads the chorus, joined by cellist Thomas Mesa and
organist Scott Dettra.

The program features a diverse selection of contemporary and 20 th century music,
including two new commissions for choir: Ēriks Ešenvalds’ 85 and Alex Berko’s
Lincoln. Latvian Ēriks Ešenvalds is one of the most sought-after composers working
today. His compositions have been premiered by the Boston Symphony, The King’s
Singers, Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, and more. Alex Berko is an American
composer currently attending Indiana University. His music has been performed by
members of The Crossing Choir, Del Sol String Quartet, and the Cape Cod Symphony.
His piece, Lincoln, uses the text from the dedication plaque that accompanies the statue
of Abraham Lincoln in Washington National Cathedral.

Completing the program: Gabriel Jackson’s Creator of the Stars of Night; Sebastian
Currier’s Sanctus from Night Mass; Herbert Howells’ Behold, O God Our Defender; I
Would Be True; and O Pray; John Tavener’s Svyati; James MacMillan’s A New Song;
Pēteris Vasks’ Grãmata čellam (for solo cello); Arvo Pärt’s Salve Regina; and Maurice
Duruflé’s Notre Père.

The arc of the program is inspired by a piece of lyrical prose written by French writer
Pascal Quignard from his 2002 book The Roving Shadows: “Without solitude, without
the test of time, without the passion for silence, without the excitation and retention of
the whole body, without a frightened stumbling, without wandering into a region of shade
and invisibility, without memory of animality, without melancholy, without isolation in
melancholy, there is no joy.”

Chance for Life @ MGM National Harbor
Mar 10 all-day

Chance for Life presented by The Boeing Company — one of the D.C. region’s most anticipated annual charity events — announces the culinary lineup for its Chef’s Taste Experience, curated by Taylor Gourmet co-founder Casey Patten.

The 13th annual Chance For Life event, taking place at the MGM National Harbor (101 MGM National Ave, Oxon Hill, MD) on Saturday, March 10, will feature an all-day 700-person poker tournament hosted by legendary fourteen-time World Series of Poker winner, Phil Hellmuth, followed by the Chef’s Taste Experience.

The Taste Experience will be held inside MGM National Harbor’s sprawling Theater space and will kick off with a tasting selection of world-renowned wine, local craft beer and the latest in mixology techniques and trends. Patten, Chance for life’s Culinary Chair, has hand selected a collection of award-winning chefs and mixologists for the signature event that includes:

  • Kyle Bailey, The Salt Line
  • Michael Friedman, Red Hen and All-Purpose
  • Danny Lee and Scott Drewno, Mandu and ChiKo
  • Katsuya Fukushima, Daikaya
  • Victor Albisu, Del Campo and Taco Bamba
  • Gina Chersevani, Buffalo & Bergen
  • Haidar Karoum, Chloe

In addition to the poker tournament and the Taste Experience, CFL guests will also participate in one of the D.C. area’s largest silent auctions and enjoy a high-energy, Vegas-style afterparty with a surprise live performance. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the evening directly fund vital pediatric cancer research at Children’s National Health System and the mission of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

“We are proud to bring together some of the best chefs in the city for a night of great food for a great cause: benefiting children battling cancer in the fight for their lives,” says Brad Nierenberg, founder of Chance for Life. “In a city full of causes and galas, Chance for Life is different — a dynamic event experience that is unlike any other in the Washington area.”

“Expressing emotion through food is the bedrock of what my team and I do day in and day out, so having the opportunity to gather some of the best culinary folks in the city for this one-in-a-million experience with Chance for Life is simply awesome,” says Patten.

Since its founding in 2005, Chance for Life has raised more than $2.7 million for pediatric cancer research, grossing more than $750,000 in 2017 alone. Sponsors of this year’s event include Facebook, GEICO, United Bank, Comcast Sportsnet, Enterprise Holdings, National Capital Bank, The Meltzer Group and more. With the ‘gift of the gab’ they already share in abundance on full display, THE IRISH TENORS will, with a full orchestra, bring their special magic to the legendary treasury of Irish music that is loved the world over. They have performed this glorious music in their own inimitable style to millions of listeners around the world and their TV broadcasts on American television, particularly PBS, have continuously topped the viewing charts, just like their numerous platinum recordings.

THE IRISH TENORS, as honorary ambassadors of Ireland and its legendary music, invite you to come along and indulge yourself, family and friends with a richly orchestrated performance of the greatest music of all time with three of the finest tenors of all time.

THE IRISH TENORS

Finbar WrightAnthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan have been touring together as THE IRISH TENORS since 1998, with sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall, Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, and major concert halls throughout the world. Their faces and voices are familiar to PBS audiences through several specials, including the “Ellis Island” recordings that sold a million CDs and DVDs. In the words of the great Irish-American actor Martin Sheen, who hosted their performance on Ellis Island, “once they’ve started, you can’t shut these guys up!”

Since they first joined voices in 1998, THE IRISH TENORS have made countless traditional treasures breathe with new life. Moreover, they’ve proven themselves gifted interpreters of a wide range of material, with such songs as “My Heart Will Go On” (from Titanic), “Fairytale Of New York” (previously recorded by Kirsty MacColl and The Pogues) and even Jimmy Kennedy’s “South Of The Border (Down Mexico Way)”. These songs live comfortably in their repertoire alongside “Danny Boy,” “Whiskey in the Jar” and “Fields Of Athenry”. Among their best-selling albums, Heritage ranks as one of the finest with classic recordings of many of the most beautiful Irish songs. We Three Kings is their best-selling Christmas Album and includes all the superb Christmas gems they feature year after year in their legendary Christmas Tour. Attending that Christmas Tour has become a tradition for many families who love their music and the special sparkle that marks their holiday program.

THE IRISH TENORS powerful vocal line-up of Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns and Ronan Tynan are unquestionably the leading brand of this genre. All classically trained singers, each having performed in leading concert halls across the world, together they combine to produce a sound and concert experience which touches hearts and stirs the emotions. Happy songs of celebration and humour, mixed with touching melodies and songs that warm the heart.

They are surely versatile, but for many, Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan are synonymous with Irish music. There is an aching bittersweet quality to much of Ireland’s musical heritage, a melodic loveliness and emotional intensity that brings a tingle to the spine and a tear to the eye. The dazzling technique and depth of feeling that defines this musical genre, amplified to the third power, is the hallmark of THE IRISH TENORS.

The magic they’ve captured on previous releases has resulted in millions of albums sold and the upper reaches of Billboard’s music charts. THE IRISH TENORS have appeared on several incredibly successful and highly rated PBS specials including Ellis Island and Live from Belfast as well as The Today ShowGood Morning AmericaRegis and KellyMartha StewartA&E Breakfast with the Arts, and are one of the best-selling acts to appear on QVC.

THE IRISH TENORS continue to tour constantly, thrilling old fans and winning new ones all around the globe. In North America, they are one of the most successful Irish touring acts ever, second only to U2. Whether as the powerful vocal trio in full flight, or in their cameo solo spots, a concert performance by THE IRISH TENORS is an experience that never fails to excite and bears witness to the power of great music when performed by true artists.
