Annual French Market @ Georgetown, DC's Book Hill Neighborhood

Celebrating its 10th year, Georgetown, DC’s Annual French Market will draw thousands of fashionistas, home design enthusiasts, foodies and families to play at the neighborhood’s unique, outdoor European-style market this spring. Hosted by the Georgetown BID, the signature open-air market will offer two days of incredible deals on unique fashion finds and trends, delicious French fare and family-friendly fun and entertainment on Friday and Saturday, April 19th & 20th, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

During French Market, shoppers will be able to score savings of up to 80 percent off designer goods, art and antique home furnishings at over 35 participating boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and galleries. With a thriving, unparalleled retail scene of over 450 merchants, and 26 new merchant openings in 2012, Georgetown is DC’s premier neighborhood for shopping.

Several of Book Hill’s best restaurants will nourish shoppers with traditional French fare such as street-side grilled merguez, sweet and savory crepes, homemade breads, pastries and more. The streets will also come alive with live music, while families can enjoy children’s activities throughout the marketplace.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton to Host Book Release for R. Kayeen Thomas @ Busboys & Poets

On April 30, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, an advocate of equality and civil rights, will host a book release celebration for 2013 NAACP Image Award Nominee Author R. Kayeen Thomas, a Washington, DC native, whose novels build bridges between the experiences of African American slaves, the civil rights generation and today’s African American Culture. The Book Release event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Busboys and Poets, 2021 14th Street NW, Washington, DC, 20009. Enjoy a meet & greet, discussion, Q&A and booksigning. There is no cost to attend the event.

 

The event will celebrate Thomas’ upcoming release The Seven Days (Simon & Schuster, April 16) and also the success of Antebellum, which secured Thomas a 2013 Image Award nomination for Outstanding Debut Author.

 

“In Kayeen Thomas, our city has produced a prolific, young novelist and playwright just six years out of college and already author of three books,” said Norton.  “The Banneker High School and Carleton College graduate brings the hip-hop sensibilities of his generation to his work with universal appeal.”

 

“As a native Washingtonian, growing up in Southeast, I am honored to have my city and my Congresswoman support my work. I have been searching for ways to reach out to my hometown, to let people in my community know that I exist and so this is really an answered prayer. I’m looking forward to a great event!” Thomas added.

 

The Seven Days is the prequel to the critically acclaimed Antebellum and tells the powerful story of what happens when a man in modern society is possessed with the spirits of dead slaves. Antebellum is about a rapper whose given name is Moses Jenkins, but his stage name is Da Nigga. Through a series of events, Moses is transported back into the antebellum slavery period and forced to experience slavery firsthand. He then returns to the present day, with all of his memories intact, and has to figure out how to continue to live his life in the context of what he went through as a slave. Light: Stories of Urban Resurrection,Thomas’ first book, is a compilation of short stories that dig deep into the heart of consciousness of the black and urban communities.  It is available in e-book format.

Nationals’ Player Autograph Session at Fluffy Cakes @ Fluffy Cakes

Fluffy Thoughts Cakes will host baseball superstar Gio Gonzalez of the Washington Nationals for a charity autograph event on Saturday, May 11th from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in McLean, Virginia.  Those who purchase one dozen of Fluffy Thoughts beautifully designed, and equally delicious, cupcakes will receive an autograph.  Extra autographs will be available for a $50 donation.  Additionally, autographed and non-autographed photos, baseballs, and jerseys will be available for purchase on-site the day of event. All proceeds from the event will benefit The G.I.O Foundation.  Nationals fans and cupcake lovers alike should plan to arrive at 9:30 a.m. as only 150 autographs will be signed.

 

 

 WHY:              The G.I.O Foundation, created by professional baseball player Gio Gonzalez, is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to children battling life challenging health illnesses. The foundation is focused on “Giving Individuals Opportunities” to improve their health and well-being. Fluffy Thoughts Cakes is opening a kiosk at Nationals Park, the official site for the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team. The kiosk will open in May. Providing the theme for the event is Imagination Stage’s production of Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach – the story of an orphan who goes on a great adventure across the Atlantic on a giant flying peach with a wacky crew of oversized bugs. After the performance, children and families are invited to participate in activities such as flying on a giant peach on a “green screen,” flower pot decorating, and a Creative Adventure class in which children will put their minds together to complete a task as a group. There will also be dancing, photo opportunities, and other exciting surprises.
 
The Children’s Ball will include a silent auction with items geared toward families and children, including camp packages, tickets for family-friendly activities and events, and other unique family experiences.

Created by sweetgreen founders Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman and Nathaniel Ru, the Festival is now in its fourth year and attracts a curated selection of cutting edge artists and 20,000 attendees – not to mention outstanding food from top chefs, food trucks, local purveyors and farmers. VIP:The festival’s VIP section will be divided into two exclusive areas: VIP Main and VIP Treehouse. VIP Main will feature a sweetgreen grab-and-go stand, as well as Rogue 24’s chef RJ Cooper who will preview his forthcoming restaurant, Gypsy Soul, with dishes inspired by the new menu. With the help of Fatworm Composting, sweetlife has created tri-waste stations to minimize the amount of trash headed to the landfill after the concert. Each experience vendor will provide compostable utensils, cups and napkins.
