In its ongoing mission to preserve and celebrate America’s film heritage, the Library of Congress will host celebrated filmmaker Christopher Nolan for a special conversation with Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden on the evening of Thursday, November 2.

“As a member of our National Film Preservation Board, Christopher Nolan is a strong advocate for the preservation of this important part of our cultural history,” said Hayden. “We’re proud to work with him and the entire film community—including writers, directors, actors, studio executives, theater owners and archivists—to make a lasting contribution to film preservation.”

During the program, the Librarian and Nolan will discuss a variety of topics, encompassing his personal experiences as a director, writer and producer of some of the most popular and acclaimed movies in cinematic history, including his latest achievement, the World War II epic “Dunkirk”; the importance of film preservation; the influence of film on history and culture; the concept of physical film as a medium and artifact; the value of continuing to shoot film in a post digital age; and the theatrical experience of film.

Several Library of Congress studies have painted a dire picture of the health of the nation’s audiovisual heritage. About 70 percent of feature-length silent films made in America have been completely lost. Established by the National Film Preservation Act of 1988, and reauthorized most recently in 2016, the Library’s National Film Preservation Board and National Film Registry work to ensure the survival, conservation and increased public availability of America’s film heritage.

“Throughout its history, film has been a powerful force in the human experience,” said Nolan. “Protecting our film heritage goes far beyond the scope of a single institution. Our collective challenge is to safeguard our cinematic legacy for the study and enjoyment of future generations.”

Born in London, Nolan began making movies at an early age with his father’s Super 8mm camera. While studying English literature at the University College London, he honed his skills, learning the guerrilla film techniques he later used to make his first feature, “Following.” He then wrote and directed such critically acclaimed films as the 2000 independent feature “Memento,” the psychological thriller “Insomnia,” and mystery thriller “The Prestige.” Nolan went on to write, direct and produce the blockbuster “The Dark Knight” trilogy, beginning in 2005 with “Batman Begins.” He followed three years later with “The Dark Knight,” which received eight Oscar nominations, and then, in 2012, with the final film in the trilogy, “The Dark Knight Rises.”  Each of the last two films earned more than a billion dollars worldwide.

Nolan directed and produced the 2010 sci-fi thriller “Inception” from his own original screenplay.  That film won four Academy Awards and received four more Oscar nominations, including two for Nolan for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Nolan’s widely praised 2014 film, “Interstellar,” earned five Academy Award nominations and four BAFTA Award nominations, winning both in the category of Best Visual Effects. Nolan most recently directed, wrote and produced the epic “Dunkirk.”  He and Emma Thomas, his wife and producing partner, also helm their own production company, Syncopy.

Food & Friends will be hosting a community Pie Day in support of its annual Slice of Life Pie Selling Campaign, which funds nutritious, home-delivered meals and groceries to the critically ill in our community. During the event, we will be distributing information aboutSlice of Life and giving away FREE samples of our delicious pies that are for sale to raise funds to support Food & Friends’ mission.

DETAILS:        The 11^th Annual Slice of Life Thanksgiving pie sale is a simple and delicious way for members of the public to support Food & Friends’ large-scale effort to deliver 1 million healthy meals this year to those in the community living with life-challenging illnesses. The goal this year is to sell 9,000 pies. Each pie purchased will provide ONE FULL DAY of meals, from our kitchen to delivery, for a Food & Friends client.

During the event, community members will have the chance to sample our Pumpkin and Apple pies and cast their vote for their favorite flavor! The winner of our “In Pie We Crust” election will go on a flash sale for the remainder of the afternoon. Everyone who votes will be entered into a drawing to win a full Thanksgiving dinner for 4, plus 2 pies.

Pies may be purchased directly from Food & Friends or through one of our corporate or individual pie sellers. More than 200 crafty bastards from all over North America will be setting up for a home run of a weekend on November 11 & 12 at Nationals Park when the 14th annual Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair, presented by the Washington City Paper (WCP), takes over the concourse. Single day and weekend passes to the festival are now on sale via the WCP website.

“The Washington City Paper has always strived to connect the voice and vision of independent artists with our readers. This festival creates an experience where consumers can discover unconventional, hard-to-find arts and crafts, meet the artists, and even make something themselves,” says the fair’s curator Wendy Silverman. “There’ll be surprises at every booth including unique home goods, clothing, punk-rock baby clothes, handcrafted jewelry, plush toys, DIY kits, screen-printing, original art, locally produced food, and much more!”

Attendees can start an art collection, get a jump on their holiday shopping, or just treat themselves to something they never knew they have to have at booths from long-time, popular Crafty Bastards, like Cuddles and Rage, DeNada Designs, Eilisain Jewelry, Stitch & Rivet, Rocks & Salt, Marcella Kriebel Art & Illustration, and Twenty Two West. The arrival of crisp, fall weather calls for a celebration of seasonal cuisine and spirits from Virginia! For the first time ever, and for one night only, beloved homegrown establishments BRABOand Catoctin Creek will present a special evening of autumnal flavor pairings in Old Town Alexandria.

On Monday, November 13, Catoctin Creek founders, Becky and Scott Harris, will be taking over BRABO’s brasserie to offer an exclusive tasting of the distillery’s popular products including the Roundstone Rye whiskey, the Pearousia Pear Brandy, the Quarter Branch Apple Brandy, the 1757 Virginia Grape Brandy, and the “Distiller’s Reserve” 92 Proof Roundstone Rye whiskey. Becky and Scott will share the stories behind the creation of each product while pouring a healthy taste for guests to enjoy.

As whiskey and brandy enthusiasts decide whether they prefer their beverage neat or on the rocks, BRABO’s Executive Chef Sebastien Rondier will serve a menu of Belgian-French hors d’oeuvres thoughtfully created to pair with the featured spirits, proving how food-friendly whiskies and brandies are. The evening’s menu will be presented side by side with each spirit and includes the following highlights:
