All Things Go Fall Classic @ yards Park

Empire of the Sun, Passion Pit, Sylvan Esso, and Christine and the Queens will top the 2016 All Things Go Fall Classic bill at Yards Park at The Capitol Riverfront on Saturday, October 8. The tastemaker festival will also see performances from a number of rising stars, including Bishop Briggs, POP ETC, Sofi Tukker, and DC’s own Ace Cosgrove.

Following a sold-out event in 2015 at Union Market’s Dock5 space, the festival will move to Yards Park at the Capitol Riverfront, located just south of Capitol Hill and east of Nationals Park. The expansive green space is steps from DC’s iconic waterfront in the Navy Yard.

The All Things Go Fall Classic has quickly emerged as one of DC’s premier music festivals, as well as one of the only music events held within District lines, and features a hand-picked selection of emerging and internationally recognized artists for a truly exceptional live experience.

In addition to the music lineup, fans will be offered a curated selection of food options, including Shake Shack, Beefsteak, Buredo, Takorean, Timber Pizza Co. and more.

Insane Inflatable 5k @ Prince William County Fair

The Insane Inflatable 5K, a dynamic fun run series made up of inflatable obstacles and taking place in over 115 cities across the United States, is coming to Washington D.C. on October 15th, it was announced today by Stuart Kaul, Director of Events,Insane Inflatable 5K.

The Insane Inflatable 5K is designed to be accessible to everybody – from competitive runners looking for a different type of challenge, to weekend warriors looking for the next great obstacle run, and even those armchair athletes looking to try something fun and new. The course is approximately 3.1 miles long and incorporates 11+ extreme inflatable obstacles throughout the unique terrain of the Prince William County Fair.

The 11+ obstacles combine imagination, creativity, and most importantly a large dose of fun, coupled with a touch of insanity. The signature inflatables (including six new obstacles added for 2016!) range in size and complexity, including “Mad House,” where runners climb, weave, and maneuver their way through this intricate and challenging new inflatable, “Jump Around,” a fan favorite and the largest inflatable of its kind with more than 70 feet of bounce pad, and “Finish Line,” the most awe-inspiring inflatable of the event where participants dodge wrecking balls, make their way past the tipsy towers, climb the rope ladder, and slide their way to victory.

Beyond the obstacles and the race, the Insane Inflatable 5k will also have a “Midway” where participants can enjoy games, food, beverages, merchandise, and swag from local vendors and sponsors.

Runners 21 and older can enjoy refreshing, cold craft beer from the Traveler Beer Company at the official Insane Inflatable 5k Beer Garden and kick back on inflatable couches with friends, family, and fellow bouncers. There will be plenty of varieties to sample, like Traveler Grapefruit Shandy, as well as seasonal offerings like Curious Traveler Lemon Shandy or Jack-O Traveler Pumpkin Shandy.

Additionally, the event will give back to the community, designating a portion of the proceeds from the race to benefit the American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement. The Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to fight every cancer in every community, with over 6,000 events worldwide. Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society save lives by funding groundbreaking cancer research, providing free information and critical services for people with cancer, and supporting education and prevention programs.  

The Washington D.C. event, taking place at the Prince William County Fair on Saturday, October 15th, will kick off at approximately 8:30 a.m. with the first wave, and additional waves will run concurrently until noon or 1:00 p.m.

“The Insane Inflatable 5k is the fastest-growing and largest obstacle run in the country, and 2016 is going to be Insane Inflatable 5K’s biggest, best, and bounciest year yet,” said Mr. Kaul. “We’ve listened to the feedback from our fans and updated our inflatable obstacles with crazy new designs. We’re taking the obstacle world to a whole new level with this insanity! Not only will there be new obstacles, but the Insane Inflatable 5K is excited to offer over 40 new locations and over 120 locations throughout the country in 2016.”

7th Annual National Race to End Women’s Cancer 5k Run/ 1 Mile Walk @ Freedom Plaza

The Foundation for Women’s Cancer (FWC) will mark its 25th Anniversary with the 7th Annual National Race to End Women’s Cancer, featuring a 5K Run and a 1 Mile Walk, on Sunday, Nov. 6, in downtown Washington, DC, on Freedom Plaza. The National Race to End Women’s Cancer is the Foundation’s major annual awareness and fundraising event, supporting the full slate of the organization’s efforts. Registration is open at endwomenscancer.org, with a $45 entry fee.

 

Every five minutes, a woman is diagnosed with a reproductive cancer – cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal or vulvar – impacting more than 98,000 women each year. That’s another mother, daughter, sister, friend or colleague every five minutes. Too many are diagnosed in the late stages, and nearly a third will die. Far too few women – or men – know how to recognize the symptoms of these cancers, and the importance of getting treatment from a gynecologic oncologist for the best outcomes. Risks rise with age, weight and other factors. The FWC supports survivors and works to raise awareness and research funding to defeat gynecologic cancers.

 

The pre-race program will begin at 8:15 a.m. at 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, with the race beginning at 9 a.m. The event is led by National Race Chair Camille Grammer, an endometrial cancer survivor and star on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” who will walk the route with her team, “Camille’s Crusaders.” All participants (survivors, family, friends, loved ones, surgeons, caregivers, colleagues, and sponsors) are encouraged to “Join the Movement” whether as a runner, walker or supporter. Even if you can’t join us in Washington, your registration fee and donation are greatly appreciated.

 

“It’s such an honor and privilege to once again play a part in such a worthy cause as the National Race to End Women’s Cancer. I’m very much looking forward to returning to Washington and reuniting with our team – Camille’s Crusaders – as we spread awareness and help raise funds for the Foundation for Women’s Cancer,” says Grammer, who is participating in her third walk. “And this year will be extra special for me as my mother [Maureen, an ovarian cancer survivor] and my daughter [Mason] will be ‘Joining the Movement’ too by walking alongside me down Pennsylvania Avenue!”

 

Since FWC was founded by the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) 25 years ago, it was discovered that cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable. The Foundation was one of the organizations leading the charge to create public awareness linking the human papillomavirus (HPV) to cervical cancer. More recently, HPV has been linked to both vaginal and vulvar cancers. FWC alerted women to the fact that a cluster of symptoms is associated with ovarian cancer, the most deadly gynecologic cancer, and has worked with other advocacy organizations to make women more knowledgeable about an individual’s risk of developing ovarian cancer. Taken together, this information can and has led to earlier detection of this cancer, when a cure is more likely.

WHO:

DJ Brenmar, based in New York by way of Chicago, represents a strange musical paradox. In 2015, Brenmar signed with A-Trak’s Brooklyn-based Fool’s Gold Records. Brenmar had an explosive 2016, with a new mix series and a record label under his belt. His music has always sat at an intersection of hip hop and dance music by marrying the gloss of commercial hip hop and r&b with the urban grittiness of underground styles like Chicago Ghetto House, UK Bass and Jersey Club. In 2016, Brenmar released two singles, “She Already Know it” and “Like a Boss” on Fool’s Gold Records. He launched his own music label “High End Times,” which has released records by UniiQU3 and Austin Millz as well as the “Grey Zone” monthly dj mix series, which has been racking up plays on SoundCloud all year.

 

Austin Millz, based in Harlem, New York, has always been passionate about music and the process of creating it. Layering soul samples over hard-hitting drums with riffs on the saxophone and piano, Austin has stacked up an arsenal of beats and has prepared to debut his talents to the world. In February 2012, Millz released his debut solo project, Earned, consisting of 17 instrumental tracks produced over the course of a year. Austin has placed productions with Jim Jones, Maybach Music Group, G.O.O.D. Music, Wale, Troy Ave and Hit-Boy. In late 2016, Millz unleashed his new single “Cyclone” featuring rapper Tungi Ige and revealed his signing to Fool’s Gold Records.

 

Jay Roberts, popularly known as J. Robb has always had a love of music. Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, J. Robb discovered FL Studio 9 in 2011 where he began developing his music skills. J. Robb’s single, “Euphoria,” has brought him a wealth of attention in the consumer and industry scenes. His SoundCloud presence alone has garnered him over 200,000,000 listens and has already been featured on outlets such as BBC1xrtra, Soulection, Beats1 Radio, Vice, Earmilk, Nest HQ and more. J. Robb is preparing for his latest project which will release in Spring 2017 and is working on booking more shows. J. Robb is influenced by artists who exude high octane energy in their live performances. He looks up to a wide range of artists from J. Dilla and Madlib to Pharrell Williams.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announces a free celebration of the 20th anniversary of Millennium Stage to thank the audiences, artists, donors, staff, ushers, fellows, and more who have made this one-of-a-kind venture a continued, resounding success. The March 19event, utilizing both the north and south stages, will feature performances by Celtic rock band Scythian and New Orleans funk band Big Sam’s Funky Nation in a massive party overtaking the Center’s Grand Foyer.

Founded in 1997 by former Kennedy Center Board Chair James A. Johnson, the Millennium Stage remains the only venue in the world to offer a free performance every day of the year that is also streamed live on the web, fulfilling the Center’s mission of making the performing arts available to everyone. It has proven to be a perfect representation of the diverse and multifaceted performing arts offered by the Kennedy Center, with such past performers as Gladys Knight, Christoph Eschenbach, Aaron Goldman, Manzari Brothers, Norah Jones, Aretha Franklin, India.Arie, Circo Para Todos, Phil Wiggins, Smokey Robinson, and Kailash Kher & Kailasa.

Library to Host Series of Disco Events

Line-up includes Gloria Gaynor, Tim Gunn

The Library of Congress is presenting a series of disco-themed events to celebrate and memorialize the era of the mid-1970s and early 1980s that changed American art, fashion, language and sound. “Bibliodiscotheque” will include two months of programs such as film screenings, lectures and a symposium followed by a disco party featuring Gloria Gaynor.

“The disco era has left a lasting mark on our culture,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “The music, the clothes, those fantastic disco balls – they are a part of Americana that new generations are still discovering and embracing. I am so thrilled to announce these events and the incredible line-up of guests we will have at the Library in the coming months as we celebrate the era of disco and share related items from the Library’s collections.”

Nearly 40 years have passed since the heyday of platform shoes and dazzling disco balls, but disco is recognized as a phenomenon that redefined cultural norms across the United States. “Lest anyone think that disco was an aberrant moment in the ’70’s. Disco culture is inextricable from the history of 20th century fashion,” said Emmy award-winning fashion icon, Tim Gunn. “Its representation in the Library of Congress not only legitimizes the genre, but fully validates it.”

 The Library of Congress holds significant collection materials in various formats that showcase the American disco experience. These items will be on display for the duration of this series. Programming includes screenings of disco-influenced films as well as lectures and panel discussions presented by cultural experts, such as author, producer and fashion icon Tim Gunn, who will present a lecture on the influence of disco fashion followed by a book signing.  The series will conclude with a symposium featuring the disco singing sensation Gloria Gaynor, followed by an evening extravaganza with a live performance.

Gaynor will discuss and sign her new book, “We Will Survive: True Stories of Encouragement, Inspiration, and the Power of Song.” The book’s title harkens back to her 1978 classic “I Will Survive” which was selected for preservation in 2016 for the National Recording Registry. In “We Will Survive,” Gaynor shares 40 inspirational, true stories about survivors of all kinds — individuals who have found comfort, hope, and courage through the power of that song.

“I am thrilled that the Library of Congress has found my role in American music worthy to be commemorated by the inclusion of my recording of “I Will Survive” in the National Recording Registry,” said Gaynor. “I look forward with great anticipation to my concert at the Library of Congress “Bibliodiscotheque.”

Events are free and open to the public. Free tickets are required for admission to all activities. Tickets will be available beginning at 10:00 a.m. on March 30at this website. A limited number of press credentials will also be available for reservation. The deadline to reserve credentials for lectures, the symposium, and the dance party is Friday, April 28. The Four Seasons of Vivaldi and Piazzolla @ Rosslyn Spectrum Theatre

Four seasons become eight when the National Chamber Ensemble presents The Four Seasons of Vivaldi and Piazzolla on Saturday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Rosslyn Spectrum. Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette is the special guest host for the evening.

Inspired by landscape paintings by Italian artist Marco Ricci, “The Four Seasons” is one of Antonio Vivaldi’s most famous works. Composed during the Baroque period and published in 1725, each concerto is accompanied by sonnets, written, as most believe, by Vivaldi himself. The sonnets provide a narrative for the music, offering a more complete picture of each season as the composition weaves its way through spring, summer, fall, and winter.

The performance of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” will include a reading of the sonnets by Mr. Fisette, as well as a multimedia presentation accompanying the performance that includes photos, moving images, and Vivaldi’s own words that he wrote into the music. The Ensemble’s Artistic Director Leonid Sushansky, called “a musical storyteller” by The Washington Post, will perform the violin solos with a sextet that includes two violins, viola, cello, double bass, and harpsichord.

In contrast, Astor Piazzolla’s “Las Quatro Estaciones Porteñas (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires)” is inspired by the rhythms of the Argentinian tango. Once of Argentina’s greatest cultural exports, Piazzolla fused jazz and tango with classical forms and 20th century harmonies, creating the musical genre of nuevo tango.

Conceived as four discrete pieces, and written nearly 240 years after Vivaldi’s work of the (almost) same name, “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” begins with summer and concludes with spring. Originally scored for Piazzolla’s Quinteto of violin, piano, electric guitar, double bass, and bandoneón (a type of concertina), the Ensemble will perform the composition as a trio featuring Natasha Dukan on piano, Sean Neidlinger on cello, and Leonid Sushansky on violin. Images of Buenos Aires throughout the seasons accompany the musical performance.

The 2016-17 NCE season concludes on May 13 with Music of Our Time, celebrating classical music from film and theater, and an appearance by Bowen McCauley Dance.
