Heighten your civic awareness through conversations about art, history and material culture. Each month, educators from the National Portrait Gallery will partner with colleagues from across the Smithsonian to discuss how historical objects from their respective collections speak to today’s social justice issues. Why is it important to have agency in how we are portrayed? Together with our co-hosts from the Freer and Sackler, Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, we will explore this key question about representation in relationship to a 1937 photograph of actress Anna May Wong and an early 21st century photo-performance by Pushpamala N. Colleen Hill, curator of costume and accessories at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT), explores the significant inspiration roses have provided to fashion designers and shares a look at the upcoming exhibition Ravishing: The Rose in Fashion, opening at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in spring 2021.

Nay Yard based Puerto Rican restaurant La Famosa will host a pop-up in partnership with Other Half Brewing in Ivy City on Sunday, May 16th from 12 – 6 p.m. Chef Joancarlo Parkhurst and team will serve a lineup of Puerto Rican snacks such as Alcapurrias de Carne (plantain and yuca fritters stuffed with a savory beef picadillo OR impossible meat filling) and Bacalaito (salt cod fritter served with crema verde) on the brewery’s outdoor covered deck.
The brewery currently does not accept reservations and all outdoor seating will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Other Half Brewing is located at 1401 Okie Street NE, Washington, D.C. 20002.
As part of a series of events commemorating AAPI Heritage Month at Hook Hall a group of noted DC chefs will prepare a three-course dinner and offer a conversation between courses. The event, to be held at the Park View bar and event space and benefitting “Chefs Stopping AAPI Hate” will take place May 20 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
The evening of food and drink will feature dinner prepared by Chefs Michelle Brown, Teaism; Kevin Tien, Moon Rabbit; and Eric Bruner Yang, Maketto.
Each course will be paired with cocktails by House of Suntory.
Christine Platt, managing director of American University’s Antiracism and Policy Center, will lead a conversation with Chefs Brown, Tien, Bruner Yang and Tim Ma of Lucky Danger.

FGIDC invites you to join us for Wine & Words, our biannual book club event, as we kick off summer reading with “Own It: The Secret to Life” by Diane von Furstenberg.
What You Will Need
To prepare for the start of the book club on June 2, we ask that you read “Own It: The Secret to Life,” so that you can participate in the discussion.
The event will be moderated by FGIDC board member Kristen Schott, the editor of Philadelphia Wedding, and a contributing writer to Northern Virginia Magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. She’ll have a glass of wine in hand for the event, and we hope you do, too.
While our first book club event will take place virtually, we plan to move to an in-person format in October at an exciting new location.
Those who register and attend our June book club will get exclusive access to pre-register and reserve their spot for October.

Youth and adults from the public and local area refugee communities will take part in a day of soccer, friendship, and fun at One Journey Soccer Fest on The Fields at RFK Campus. The event is organized by One Journey and partners, DC Sports Soccer and L.A.C.E.S.
One Journey Soccer Fest includes an adult 7×7 soccer tournament, a youth soccer clinic with various stations and recreational activities, and numerous opportunities for refugees and participants from the public to build friendships, respect, and mutual understanding.

One Journey is a grassroots alliance working to shift the conversation about refugees worldwide by amplifying refugee voices and celebrating the talents and stories of newcomers. We strive to build enduring allies for refugees and use cultural and technological tools to facilitate connections between refugees and their host communities.
