Top Ten: Vegan Restaurants in DC

The city’s been scoured for diners on a specific diet — a very vegan one, that is!  Check out our Top Ten list of restaurants with rockin’ menus (shown in no particular order), all of which abstain from using animal products:

Sticky Fingers (1370 Park Rd. NW) is bakery and more! Come here for cupcakes, vegan sticky buns, a great grilled cheese and a tuna melt that’s so tuna tasting you just can’t tell… Another Sticky secret?  Free WiFi!

Elizabeth’s Gone Raw (1341 L Street NW) is simple, creative and thoughtfully prepared.  Everything is raw, of course. Expect Kale chips instead of a bread basket and look for interesting wine pairings as you dine in this converted row house.  Fresh, but fancy, reservations are required.

The Brookland Cafe (3740 12th Street NE) is a surprisingly little cafe with a full vegan menu.  When you visit this neighborhood tavern in the shadow of the Basilica, don’t forget to try the owner’s suggestion: a mock fish sandwich.

Cafe Green (1513 17th Street NW) – affiliated with Java Green – is one of the first vegan restos everyone raves about.  Even non-vegans crave the cafe’s macaroni and cheese with lemon steamed kelp… and how about that beet and berry salad?!

Everlasting Life Cafe (2928 Georgia Ave. NW) is your go-to spot for vegan soul food, served buffet style, at a great price.  Hot food selections change daily.

Smoke & Barrel (2471 18th Street NW) is a vegan’s best bet for BBQ.  Yep, BBQ.  Vegan que, fried pickles and vegan sides – and a weekend brunch to boot!

Bread & Brew (1247 20th Street) is french inspired with local seasonal ingredients, so try the quiche!  Desserts are also divine, but the major draw here just may be Meatless Monday.

Food For Thought Cafe (1811 14th Street NW) is open only for dinner.  Connected to the Black Cat, you’ll be tempted to sit for supper before seeing a show — we recommend the vegan lasagna! The best part?  Food For Thought’s most expensive item on the menu is only $11.

Harmony Cafe (3287 M Street NW) may seem an odd choice form the outside (downstairs next to a tattoo parlor), but step in to find something solid – and unbeatably priced!  Get your asian food fix by asking for almost all items on the menu to be vegan.

Juice Joint Cafe (1025 Vermont Ave. NW) has a variety of vegan soups (all priced under $8), sandwiches, wraps… and fruit juices and smoothies, of course!  This joint is jumpin.’
