Former First Lady Announced as Alice Award Winner

Like Alice Paul, she believes that a world that is good for women is good for everyone.

Wednesday, the Sewell-Belmont House announced that former First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush will be honored at its prestigious Alice Award luncheon on Wednesday, September 19th.  The Alice Award is named after Alice Paul – suffragist, human rights activist and founder of the National Woman’s Party – who spent her life tirelessly working for women’s equality.

Each year, the Alice Award honors women who have broken barriers and set new precedents for women; Through her work on education, health care and human rights, Mrs. Bush has influenced women’s lives in the United States and around the world.  And as the Chair of the Women’s Initiative at the George W. Bush Institute, Laura Bush continues her work on global healthcare innovations, empowering women in emerging democracies, and education reform.

Past honorees of the Alice Award include Senators Dianne Feinstein & Olympia Snowe; House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi; Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; Katie Couric; Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and Mary Landrieu; the women pioneers of NPR – Cokie Roberts, Susan Stamberg, Nina Totenberg and Linda Wertheimer; Tipper Gore; Billie Jean King; and Evelyn Lauder.
