More than 4,000 participants — the largest number of attendees in FITDC HerStory 5k’s five-year history — joined in on Saturday, March 5th, making the Women’s History Month tradition that focuses on citywide fitness a huge success.

Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes, who lives in the DC-area, served as guest host, bringing her whole family out to pump up the crowd and provide words of inspiration before taking part in the race and the events following.

The HerStory 5K annually invites women, men, children, and dogs from all eight wards of DC to participate in a scenic race route down Pennsylvania Ave. The event, in which Mayor Bowser also makes a personal appearance, features vendors from local women-owned businesses and offers fun facts about women’s history adorning the plaza starting line.

Dawes, who was attending the FITDC HerStory 5K for the first time, fit in well with the event’s exercise and entrepreneurship theme: She owns the Dominique Dawes Gymnastics & Ninja Academy in Clarksburg and Rockville, with plans to open a studio in DC.
