Carleton Varney, Greenbrier Curator & Design Guru: “We Don’t Want You to Feel At Home”

“We don’t want you to feel at home,” quipped design guru, protégé of Dorothy Draper & Co. and current Curator of the The Greenbrier Carleton Varney at a luncheon introduction to the historic West Virginia resort’s inaugural Discovery Series Monday afternoon.  “We want you to feel extravagant… [the place is] a Kodak moment in every way.”

Varney joined The Greenbrier President Jeff Kmiec in hosting guests at The Greenbrier’s Upper Lobby space, a mini-likeness of the lobby in White Sulphur Springs transplanted mere steps from the White House, awash in color, rhododendrons (the state flower of WV), and calculated whimsy.

“I followed Dorothy Draper in the tradition of what The Greenbrier meant to her after the war,” shared Varney recounting his favorite places and design elements at the resort (breathtaking views from the ‘eyebrow window’ in his namesake Carleton Varney suite topped the list!).  “It retains all of those special effects that give you the best.”

The guest experience at the grandeur of The Greenbrier’s 10,000 acres becomes even more enticing with a series of eight weekend events taking place this Winter and early Spring — including a Carleton Varney Weekend complete with design workshops, private walking tours, book signings and cocktail parties.  Additional weekends range from culinary arts to craft brewing, antiques to fine art, and romance!

These weekends take place during the resort’s celebrated Tribute promotional price offering, starting at $199 nightly.

Says Varney, “It’s better than Disneyland!”
