Art Auction & Wine Tasting Party

Art on the Vine – part global wine tour, part fine art tour – features a seven day online auction of artwork by The Art League’s esteemed faculty of artists. The kick-off wine-tasting party and the “Artwork Unveiling & First Bid,” on Friday, June 8, 7:30–10:30 pm in the Torpedo Factory Art Center, features 10 wines from small artisan vineyards around the world.

 
The wine selection, ranging from light and fresh to full-bodied, has been curated by Well Crafted Beverage. Three reds, three whites, three sparklers, and one sweet wine are available to taste.

Each ticket includes: event admission, the opportunity to see all of the artwork in person, access to the Silent Auction, a souvenir wine glass, eight redeemable wine tasting tags + one full pour, and a complementary light buffet provided by Chadwicks. Live music will be in full swing with the Foggy Bottom Whomp-Stompers.

 
The auction, ticket sales, and a portion of the wine and food sales, all raise money to benefit The Art League and its programs.

URBANA’S “PRIDE + SHINE” BRUNCH

Perfectly situated at the start of the Capital Pride Parade route, Urbana is hosting its annual “Pride + Shine” party on Saturday, June 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The restaurant will be transformed into a lively Pride celebration complete with food, libations, and a fierce dance party with DJ Trayze. Special guest Mike Hot-Pence will be at the all-day brunch for the second year in a row. Sporting his signature hot pants, the “Vice President” will be chatting with guests, taking photos, and collecting donations to benefit The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth. 

 

“Pride + Shine” Bar Package

Urbana is opening the bar from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a special drink package for its “Pride + Shine” brunch party. For $50, guests have the option to choose select beer, wine, or their favorite mixed cocktail. Guests may purchase this bar package in advance at PrideAndShine2018.Eventbrite.com or at the door.

 

There is no entry fee to attend Urbana’s “Pride + Shine” brunch party. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling 202-956-6650 or visiting www.urbanadc.com. Patio seating will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Guests may inquire about patio reservations to guarantee front-row seating and a direct view of the Capital Pride Parade. The parade starts at Urbana, giving all “Pride + Shine” party-goers the opportunity to see everything first!

DNV ROOFTOP’S “PRIDE HANGOVER POOL PARTY”

DNV Rooftop opened for the 2018 season earlier this month, with an entirely new cocktail menu and refreshed brunch menu. On Sunday, June 10 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., DNV Rooftop will take the rooftop dining experience a step further by opening its pool for all guests – locals, visitors, and everyone in between – for its “Pride Hangover Pool Party.” After a long day of walking in the Capital Pride Parade or bouncing around the city to multiple Pride celebrations, guests are invited to go up 14 stories to the top of the Kimpton Donovan Hotel for an afternoon of relaxation by the pool. DJ Hamsey will be providing popular tunes from such fabulous divas as Britney Spears, Madonna, and Lady Gaga while guests sip cocktails, cool off by the pool, and enjoy brunch overlooking Thomas Circle.

In addition to the new 2018 summer cocktail menu, Lead Bartender Justin Golash will be offering DNVLGBTQ Pride Pops (rainbow boozy popsicles) specially made for the day. One dollar from each Pride Pop will be donated to The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth.

Walters Art Museum Block Party @ Walters Art Museum

Join the Walters Art Museum for the opening celebration of 1 West Mount Vernon Place (known as Hackerman House). On Saturday, June 16, the Walters is hosting a free block party in the heart of Mount Vernon. America Now: Solstice Edition @ Three Museums

Museum visitors can revel in the extra hours of daylight and reflect on American unity with “America Now: Solstice Edition” on Saturday, June 23. This special evening of festivities is a three-museum collaboration between the National Museum of American History, National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum. Now in its fourth year, the tri-institutional partnership of “America Now” will coincide for the first time with a full Smithsonian-wide Solstice celebration.

 

“America Now: Solstice Edition” is free to the public and open to general audiences; drinks and food will be available for purchase at each location. More information at AmericaNow.si.edu.

Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery

Continuing the festivities, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery will host an array of activities across art and performance. Guests will be welcomed by an outdoor Community Block Party composed of food trucks, lawn games and craft-making activities with local artists organized in collaboration with Made in DC. They can connect with representatives from the Downtown BID, Woolly Mammoth Theater Company, Shakespeare Theater Company and Fresh Farm Farmer’s Market. Visitors can then cool off at a boutique-designed Beer Garden inside the Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard, have their portraits done by a Washington-based caricature artist and explore the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery’s exhibitions throughout the first floor. “America Now” will conclude with dancing to the sounds of DJ Ayes Cold and a major live concert by Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics, and Washington’s own Oddisee.

 

“America Now” is a three-museum collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, National Museum of American History and Smithsonian American Art Museum. It is made possible by the support of the Robert and Arlene Kogod Family Foundation. The Washington Post is the media sponsor of America Now. This year’s celebration is part of a Smithsonian’s “Solstice Saturday” program done in association with the “By the People Festival,” led by Halcyon. The Smithsonian’s Washington D.C. museums will be open until midnight on June 23 (except for the National Postal Museum). Details are outlined at www.si.edu/SolsticeSaturday.

Brew at the Zoo @ Smithsonian National Zoo

Tickets are on sale now for the 13th annual Brew at the Zoo. The event will be held on Thursday, July 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. Hosted by Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ), Brew at the Zoo will feature nearly 100 craft breweries, all in support of wildlife conservation.

Local favorites such as Port City Brewing Company and 2018 RAMMY Award winner Right
Proper Brewing Company will be joined by popular microbreweries including Bluejacket, Denizens Brewing Company, and Hellbender Brewing Company.

In addition to sampling great hops, food will be available for purchase from popular food trucks. Guests will also be able to mingle with new and old friends while playing lawn games and enjoying live music from The Reflex 80's Tribute Band, Radar, and Bobby McKey’s dueling pianists.
“This event is truly unique,” said Lynn Mento, Executive Director of Friends of the National Zoo. “There is no other beer festival in DC where you can sip your favorite beers while watching the lions and tigers. But best of all — the proceeds go to support the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute’s work to save endangered wildlife here and around the globe.”

Several ticket types are available for purchase. General admission tickets are $50 for FONZ members and $65 for nonmembers. VIP tickets are $95 for FONZ members and $110 for nonmembers. VIP ticket holders will be granted early admission to the general event area at 5 p.m. before the general public Beginning at 6 p.m. VIP ticket holders will be given access to the VIP area at Great Cats Circle featuring exclusive animal experiences, generous pours from breweries only found in the VIP area, and unlimited food selections from top DC restaurants. Sober driver tickets are also available, $30 for general admission and $85 for VIP. Sober drivers will not receive a commemorative mug and will not be served beer.
