The National Chamber Ensemble continues its eleventh season with Romantic Violin For Two – a repertoire of romantic works for Valentine’s Day – on Saturday, February 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington.

One violin virtuoso is great, but two are even better! Enjoy some of the most romantic music for a unique duo of two violins and piano. Artistic director/violinist Leo Sushansky and violinist and professor of violin James Stern are joined by dynamic pianist Kathryn Brake for a program of works by Mozart, Moszkowski, Paganini, Massenet and Kreisler.
The evening’s program includes Mozart’s sparkling “Concertante For Two Violins,” Moszkowski’s brilliant “Suite for Two Violins and Piano in G Minor,” and Fritz Kreisler’s charming Viennese favorites “Liebesleid (Love’s Sorrow)” and “Liebesfreud (Love’s Joy).” Also on the program are two of the most beautiful violin works ever: “Cantabile in D Major” by Niccolo Paganini and the Massenet ethereal “Meditation” from Thais.
Mozart’s “Concertante for Two Violins” opens the performance. Ferdinand David has taken “Sonata for Two Pianos K.448,” which Mozart authority Alfred Einstein (cousin of Albert) called one of the most profound of Mozart’s compositions, and arranged the piece for two violins and a piano. This particular work is often referred to during discussions of the Mozart Effect (the theory that listening to classical music improves brain function). The piece is followed by the short, lush works ofMassenet, Paganini, and Kreisler to conclude the first half of the program.
The second half includes Moritz Moszkowski’s “Suite in G Minor.” Moszkowski enjoyed a considerable international reputation as a composer and pianist, and was feted as the natural successor to Chopin. It is a mark of his success that his music was arranged for countless ensembles and solo instruments. His “Suite in G Minor” is a collection of four contrasted movements written for all three instruments: the violins soar and trade phrases above a piano accompaniment. Moszkowski’s Suite – almost unknown to the general concert-going public today – provides an exciting discovery for those who attend this concert.
National Chamber Ensemble’s internationally acclaimed musicians have redefined the meaning of chamber music by incorporating tango, spirituals, jazz, klezmer, opera, ballet, modern dance, and multimedia into programs with traditional classical masterpieces. The Ensemble has also hosted premiere works by top contemporary classical composers such as Lowell Liebermann, Gary William Friedman, Dick Hyman, and Alexander Goldstein.

Distinguished musicians will perform the music of Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach on Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Heurich House Museum. Andrew Fouts (violin) and Leon Chelhase (harpiscord) will play Selections from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Partita No. 2 in D minor for Violin Solo, BMV 1004, and Violin Sonata No. 6 in G, BMV 1019, in the historic Conservatory. The concert is the museum’s first partnership with the esteemed The Washington Bach Consort.
Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin opened up new possibilities of technique and expression for the instrument. The second partita is renowned for its last movement – the famous D minor Ciaccona, a piece of extraordinary scope and complexity often ranked among the composer’s greatest achievements. The 48 preludes and fugues that comprise the two volumes of The Well-Tempered Clavier bring together virtuosity and technical rigor in a fashion rarely seen before or since. The elegant Sonata in G Major for violin and harpsichord rounds out this instrumental showcase.
The Heurich House Museum is the historic, family home of German immigrant and brewer, Christian Heurich. Christian and Amelia Heurich were avid music lovers, supporting musical organizations and attending performances in Washington, DC, Germany, and Italy. The museum’s partnership with The Washington Bach Consort is an opportunity to experience German musical artistry in a home surrounded by baroque- and renaissance-revival craftsmanship and continue the legacy of Christian and Amelia.

Founded in 1977 by the late Dr. J. Reilly Lewis, the Washington Bach Consort is committed to the study and performance of the complete vocal and instrumental works of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries. The Cathedral Choral Society continues its 2017.18 season with
Solitude and Joy on Sunday, March 4, 4:00 pm at Washington National Cathedral.
Guest conductor Donald Nally leads the chorus, joined by cellist Thomas Mesa and
organist Scott Dettra.
The program features a diverse selection of contemporary and 20 th century music,
including two new commissions for choir: Ēriks Ešenvalds’ 85 and Alex Berko’s
Lincoln. Latvian Ēriks Ešenvalds is one of the most sought-after composers working
today. His compositions have been premiered by the Boston Symphony, The King’s
Singers, Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, and more. Alex Berko is an American
composer currently attending Indiana University. His music has been performed by
members of The Crossing Choir, Del Sol String Quartet, and the Cape Cod Symphony.
His piece, Lincoln, uses the text from the dedication plaque that accompanies the statue
of Abraham Lincoln in Washington National Cathedral.

The arc of the program is inspired by a piece of lyrical prose written by French writer
Pascal Quignard from his 2002 book The Roving Shadows: “Without solitude, without
the test of time, without the passion for silence, without the excitation and retention of
the whole body, without a frightened stumbling, without wandering into a region of shade
and invisibility, without memory of animality, without melancholy, without isolation in
melancholy, there is no joy.”
The future is female, so celebrate International Women’s Day by fundraising with the National Organization of Women’s D.C. chapter, part of The Embassy Row Hotel’s Support a Cause fundraising program. Celebrating more than three decades as one of the Washington area’s most prominent charity events, the Leukemia Ball is scheduled for Saturday, March 10, 2018, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The event is dedicated to raising money for life-saving cancer research and patient programs funded by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Since the first Leukemia Ball in 1988, the event has raised nearly $60 million toward finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and efforts to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
Guests at the 2018 gala will enjoy entertainment from Grammy Award nominee, bestselling author, radio host, and comedian Jeff Foxworthy, known best for his blue-collar humor and comedic storytelling style that has been compared to Mark Twain’s. “LLS is changing the landscape of cancer research now more than ever, as the FDA has approved 13 new blood cancer treatments in 2017. Seventy-four cents of every dollar spent by LLS funds its mission, and LLS’s commitment to funding innovative research projects has contributed to an unprecedented rise in survival rates over recent years.
