Annual French Market @ Georgetown, DC's Book Hill Neighborhood

Celebrating its 10th year, Georgetown, DC’s Annual French Market will draw thousands of fashionistas, home design enthusiasts, foodies and families to play at the neighborhood’s unique, outdoor European-style market this spring. Hosted by the Georgetown BID, the signature open-air market will offer two days of incredible deals on unique fashion finds and trends, delicious French fare and family-friendly fun and entertainment on Friday and Saturday, April 19th & 20th, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

During French Market, shoppers will be able to score savings of up to 80 percent off designer goods, art and antique home furnishings at over 35 participating boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and galleries. With a thriving, unparalleled retail scene of over 450 merchants, and 26 new merchant openings in 2012, Georgetown is DC’s premier neighborhood for shopping.

Several of Book Hill’s best restaurants will nourish shoppers with traditional French fare such as street-side grilled merguez, sweet and savory crepes, homemade breads, pastries and more. The streets will also come alive with live music, while families can enjoy children’s activities throughout the marketplace.

Participating merchants will include: A MANO, Addison/Ripley Fine Art, Bacchus Wine Cellar, The Bean Counter, Café Bonaparte, Clyde’s, 1789, The Dandelion Patch, Darrell Dean Antiques, duo, Easel Hair Studio, Ella-Rue, Frameworks, The French Apartment, Heiner Contemporary, Ilo, Ipsa, Jaryam, Macaron Bee, Manny & Olga’s Pizza, Moss & Co./Catherine Roberts/Oliver Dunn, Nectar Skin Bar, Patisserie Poupon, Sassanova, Sherman Pickey, Susan Calloway Fine Arts, TARI, The Phoenix, Urban Chic and The Magic Wardrobe. A complete list of participating merchants and events will be continuously updated online starting in March.

Washington Project for the Arts’ SLEEPOUT @ Capitol Skyline Hotel

Washington Project for the Arts will host the first poolside soiree of the season! The WPA SLEEPOUT pajama-jam will warm-up WPA’s new home at the Capitol Skyline Hotel, 10 I (Eye) Street SW, on Saturday, April 20 from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.

SLEEPOUT will feature slumber party-themed performances, music, movies, art, and other participatory happenings.

“Bring a tent or sleeping bag, sport some stylish loungewear, and party under the stars with WPA,” said Executive Director Lisa Gold.  “Come for part of the night or stay through breakfast the next morning…either way, we can’t wait to connect with the community in our new home.”

Tickets to SLEEPOUT include two drink tickets, in addition to s’mores and storytelling, late-night movie-screenings, nighttime traditions such as
karaoke with Jeremy Flick. DJ’s Patrick White and Sean Peoples of Fatback will spin funk and soul to get the party started, and artist Megan Blafas will set the slumber scene.

*In February, WPA took up temporary residence in a suite on the fourth floor of the Capitol Skyline Hotel for the next year as the organization finalizes plans for securing a long-term location to house both administrative and exhibition space.

Georgia-born Gladys Knight began her ascent in music after forming The Pips with her brother and cousins, which later became Gladys Knight and the Pips. The group debuted their first album in 1960, when Knight was 16 years old, going on to achieve icon status with memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, Top 20 hits like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and the #1 smash “Midnight Train to Georgia.” Knight enjoyed another #1 hit in 1985 when she teamed with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dionne Warwick on “That’s What Friends are For.” Knight has recorded more than 40 albums over the course of her career.

Her involvement in other creative undertakings has been extensive.  In 1986, she produced and starred in the Cable Ace Award-winning “Sisters in the Name of Love,” an HBO special co-starring Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle.  That same year, she co-starred with Flip Wilson in the CBS comedy “Charlie & Co.”  Other acting roles followed on such TV shows as “Benson,” “The Jefferson’s” and “New York Undercover,” and in such television films as “Pipe Dreams,” “An Enemy Among Us” and “Desperado.” She recorded the title theme for the James Bond movie License to Kill.  In 1999, she completed a starring run on Broadway in the smash musical hit Smokey Joe’s Café.

In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame.  Knight published an autobiography, Between Each Line of Pain and Glory, in 1997, and the next year, she and The Pips were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. In 2004, Knight received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual BET Awards ceremony.

Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival @ Kingman Island

What:  The fourth annual Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival presented by Events DC, featuring seven bluegrass bands including The Hackensaw Boys and more. The festival will celebrate local music, food, and culture as well as the revitalization of the Anacostia River.

The Festival will include seven hours of performances by local bluegrass bands, DC’s favorite food trucks, Sierra Nevada beer, bike giveaways from BicycleSPACE and tours of the island, local music busking stages, and a children’s area with crafts and games.

“DC has many local treasures with a great cultural history. Kingman Island is one of our hidden environmental jewels and bluegrass owns a remarkable musical tradition in our city. This festival celebrates both.” – Ward 6 Council Member Timmy Wells.

Biking and metro are encouraged. A free shuttle will run from Stadium/Armory Metro Station. Free parking is available in RFK Lot 6.

Who:   The Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival presented by Events DC, is a collaboration between Living ClassroomsCouncilman Tommy Wells’ OfficeBicycleSPACE, Listen Local First and media partner WAMU’s Bluegrass Country. All are welcome to attend.

Cost:    $10 Suggested Donations. Donations will support Living Classrooms’ environmental education programming for DC youth on Kingman Island.

The dynamic duo invites fashion enthusiasts to swap designer clothing and accessories and enjoy a fashion-focused event to help end domestic violence.

 Swap In the City will rally DC’s emerging fashion giants for a fun-filled evening of social shopping and style sneak peaks. Attendees dropping off their luxury swaps will be greeted with complimentary cocktails and treats, a wealth of style tips from local experts, and have the opportunity to meet the wave of style savvy startup founders shaping DC’s fashion future. With music from DJ Kryogen and Comcast Sports’ Julie Donaldson as hostess, the soiree will offer a glimpse of ready-to-wear looks by D’Milikah while the top designer swap items will be modeled down the runway by CapFABB bloggers. Closing the night with a high-end clothing swap, event-goers will walk away with coveted, designer goods for a noble cause.
