Atlanta-born, Nigerian-raised Howard University graduate and pop powerhouse AYO hopes her music can provide a message of empowerment and liberation. Her versatile style ranges from pop to hip-hop to soul, but the core of her work is always emotional vulnerability, love, and self-actualization. Her performances in the Mansion at Strathmore are on Wednesdays, January 15 and 29, 2020 at 7:30PM, kicking off the Artist in Residence class of 2020 concerts. AYO’s performances are generously sponsored by Mrs. Patricia Haywood Moore and Dr. Roscoe M. Moore, Jr. Tickets and more information are available at www.strathmore.org or by calling (301) 581-5100.

AYO’s forthcoming EP release explores the intricacies of being a black woman in America, heralding a message of love, freedom, and self-discovery. She employs a soulful blend of smooth vocals and poignant lyrics to illustrate her struggles with identity and acceptance. Over the course of her accomplished career, AYO has been featured in NPR’s Christmas special, made the top eight contestants on BET’s Sunday Best, and performed at the Kennedy Center for the 2015 DC Jazz Festival. She was also a soloist for the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2016. Most recently, AYO portrays a young Ella Fitzgerald in the newly released HBO documentary, The Apollo.

AYO earned a bachelor’s degree from Howard University in Jazz Studies and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Jazz Performance. She credits her time in Howard University’s Jazz Studies program for giving her a solid foundation of music theory and technique from which she could expand and explore. Since graduating, the accomplished singer-songwriter has worked with artists such as Common, Chance the Rapper, and Andra Day.

My Fair Lady

From Lincoln Center Theater comes “a sumptuous new production of the most perfect musical of all time” (Entertainment Weekly), Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady. Director Bartlett Sher’s glowing production is “thrilling, glorious and better than it ever was” (The New York Times). Boasting such classic songs as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady.” But who is really being transformed?

Elvis’ Birthday Fight Club @ Gala Hispanic Theatre
Jan 3 @ 7:30 PM – 11:59 PM

2020 marks the 10th year of one of DC and Baltimore’s most bizarre and exciting traditions: celebrating Elvis Presley’s birthday with a show of back alley fisticuffs and burlesque. The 10th Annual Elvis’ Birthday Fight Club takes place at DC’s Gala Hispanic Theatre (3333 14th Street NW) January 3 and 4th at 7:30 and 10 pm.Elvis’ Birthday Fight Club (EBFC) is hosted by “The King” and femcee Kittie Glitter who provide hilarious color commentary for an action-packed, punch-drunk, below-the-belt, hilarious night of lowbrow theater.

Seven rounds of flimflam fisticuffs are the centerpiece of the action, and in between, bouts of burlesque performances offer a sexy reprieve from the cartoon-esque violence. EBFC’s fight card is always a closely-guarded secret, and trying to anticipate who, or what, might be on the roster is half the fun. For year 10, five past fighters have been invited back to take part in a grand finale Royal Rumble. Past match ups have ranged from the topical (the Franken-Weinstein monster vs. a vagina) to the intensely absurd (My Little Pony vs. Leatherface).

The show has a number of dedicated fans who return each year and induct new audience members into the insanity.

“People brag about how many years they have been coming,” says Kate Taylor Davis, one of the show’s producers. “They email me months in advance of the event to confirm dates because their out-of-town friends want to come too. This is a strange annual touchstone, and people LOVE it!”.

The show’s origin was somewhat happenstance, created when the producers were assigned a date to put on an event that happened to coincide with The King’s birthday. Originally intended as a one-off event, the popularity of an evening that centered around Elvis, the toilet he died on (known as “Commodious”) and mistaking his dying wish for a commemorative nightclub, as a “fight club”, became a huge hit.

Featuring: Jared Davis as “Elvis,” Jei Spatola as Kittie Glitter, Andrew Wodzianski as

Commodious, Bebe Bardot, Lucrezia Blozia, Carlos Bustamante,  Patrick M. Doneghy, Matt Grant, Callie Pigeon, Candy Del Rio, Cherie Sweetbottom, Stephon Walker, and more. Fight choreography by James Finley, sound by Mehdi Raoufi, lights by Camille Kashaka, and general direction by Kate Taylor Davis.

For audiences 21+. Tickets are $28 in advance. Ticket link and information at fightclubshow.com
