The Junior Friends of The Campagna Center is pleased to announce the 5th Annual Bowties & Belles, a Kentucky Derby Party, which will take place on Saturday, May 3 from 4:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Belle Haven Country Club. Proceeds from this event help support programs of The Campagna Center. Bowties & Belles will feature an afternoon of watching the Derby, an exciting raffle, live music provided by The Kate Moran Band, a silent auction and cocktail reception featuring the official derby cocktail, the Mint Julep. The event expects to attract over 250 D.C. area residents and business leaders to participate in this festive afternoon.

For nearly 70 years, The Campagna Center has served as Alexandria’s trusted charitable organization, offering programs to enrich academic and social skills for children, strengthen families, and help adults become self-sufficient. Through effective and visionary leadership, the Center has responded to the changing needs of the community with quality programming and services.

7th Annual Wine & Food Festival @ National Harbor

A great summer tradition will return to the National Harbor Waterfront on the Potomac with the much anticipated 7th Annual National Harbor Wine & Food Festival on Saturday, May 3rd and Sunday, May 4th  from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm each day.

The event is totally tent-covered in a beautiful outdoor setting on the banks of the Potomac River and surrounded by the National Harbor hotels, restaurants and shops, and continues to be a true destination event.  More than just a tasting, the Festival brings together award winning celebrity chefs, artisanal craftsmen, culinary pioneers, smooth jazz, family fun as well as wine and spirits from around the world.

This year’s festival will include over 150 International wines, spirits and beers featured along with local and regional favorites.  Guests will be able to sample all of the varieties as well as purchase them by the glass and the bottle, on-site at special event only low prices. Beyond the drink tastings there are many other highlights which include:  a Cinco De Mayo Pavilion, Special craft beer tasting Bier Garten experience, Whiskey and Bourbon Tasting Experience,three stages of live music and smooth jazz, and so much more.  It is the largest award winning wine festival of its kind in the Metro DC market.

This year’s organizers have turned up the heat on the Cooking Stage and brought in some award winning super star chef talent. Special appearances on the Cooking Stage include, Saturday: Chef Mike Isabella of Graffiato, Chef Rahman “Rock” Harper winner of Fox Reality television series Hell’s Kitchen, Chef Bryan Voltaggio of Volt/Range Restaurant, and Sunday with Chef Scott Drewno of The Source by Wolfgang Puck, Chef Mike Schlow and Chef Victor Albisu of Del Campo and Taco Bambo. All of these local, regional and nationally recognized chefs will offer meet and greets and cooking demonstrations.

Additional events include a live taping Saturday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m. of radio show Foodie and Beast with hosts Nycci and David Nellis.  During the taping, guests will be included in a blind wine tasting with several of the area’s best wine experts.  The show will air on Sunday, May 2 at 11:00 a.m. on Federal News Network.

The Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center will hold its annual Wine Dinner at the resort’s signature restaurant, Old Hickory Steakhouse, onFriday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m.  Guests can enjoy a five-course meal paired with local Virginia wines from Barboursville Vineyards.  The dinner costs $125 perperson.

The resort also will be offering a Wine and Cheese by Sunset event at Pose Rooftop Lounge on Saturday, May 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests can enjoy New World wines paired with gourmet cheeses, while enjoying views of the Potomac River and surrounding region from the resort’s 18th floor. The event costs $25 per person.

Gaylord National Resort will be one of the many featured culinary participants within the Food and Wine Festival, as well as offer two overnight packages for Saturday, May 3 that include one or two day access to the event.

The VIP Pier will offer wonderful restaurant tastings for foodies to indulge their inner passions such as: Whoopsie’s Gourmet Whoopie Pies, Eleven Courses Private Chefs, Mojo Magic – Cuban Salsa & more! DCCK’s Sound Bites @ Ronald Reagan Building

Tickets are officially on sale for the fifth annual Sound Bites, an outdoor food and music festival benefitting the vital work of DC Central Kitchen. Presented by Groupon, Sound Bites will be held on May 4, 2014 at a new, larger location – the Ronal Reagan Building’s Woodrow Wilson Plaza. Guests will sample food and drinks from 25 of the DC area’s top restaurants, artisans and mixologists, with music from local bands and DJs. A ‘Mixologist Madness Competition’, hosted by ABC7 and NewsChannel 8 reporter Scott Thuman and Tommy McFly, fellow ABC7 reporter and host of the Tommy Show on 94.7 Fresh FM, will star local mixologists whose cocktails will be judged by a panel of experts. Details of the competition will be announced soon. Not currently available in the DC market, Eugene, Oregon’s acclaimed Oakshire Brewing Co.is teaming up with loved local 3 Stars Brewing Company for an epic beer journey at Jack Rose.

Both breweries will take over the bar’s 20-tap draft system, offering tastes from one of Oregon’s smallest and most talented breweries along with one of DC’s favorite local breweries, both which embody what beer is all about: community, quality and amazing beer.

The event will also debut a Jack Rose-exclusive Knob Creek Rye Barrel-aged version of the 3 Stars Southern Belle from the only known Knob Creek Rye barrel to ever leave the distillery.

Guests can enjoy $5 beer specials from 6pm-9pm and the event is free and open to the public.

Art & Soul’s Biscuit Bash @ Art & Soul

On May 7, Art and Soul is hosting a friendly biscuit competition to help kick off patio season and raise funds for Hospitality High, a preparatory high school for D.C. students interested in the hospitality industry.Five local chefs will take part in the friendly throw down, with winners decided by the voting public. Battling it out for the title of Biscuit King will be:

  • Jason Gehring of Menu MBK
  • Hamilton Johnson of Vidalia
  • Dylan Fultineer of Rappahannock River Oysters
  • Brian McPherson of Jackson 20
  • Susan Wallace of BlackSalt
Students from Hospitality High will be helping out at each station, assisting the chefs in the preparation and plating of their biscuit creations.
 
An all-star lineup of Art and Soul’s industry friends will be lending a hand, including:
  • Derek Brown, who will be serving cocktails
  • Craig Rogers of Border Spring Farms, who will roast a whole lamb
  • Staff from Rappahannock River Oysters, who will be shucking and serving to order
Chef Art Smith will be in attendance for the event and Drymill Road band will perform live bluegrass music.

The event will run on May 7 from 6-8pm on Art and Soul’s patio (indoors should it rain). Tickets are $55 a person and must be purchased in advance at BiscuitBash.Eventbrite.com.

Runway Moms for a Cause @ Renaissance Hotel Dupont Circle

The 2nd “Runway Moms for a Cause” (RMFC) fundraiser celebration, created by L~Shandi designer Lara Akinsaya, will take place on May 9th at the Renaissance Washington, DC Dupont Circle Hotel. The 2014 event will also include media partner Washingtonian MOM magazine.  Labeled a fashion statement for Global Goodwill, RMFC is a runway show for philanthropists to take a stance on issues that affect children in America and abroad while lending a helping hand towards a solution.
 
This year over 200 guests, that are representative of DC’s elite business leaders, dignitaries and global media, will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction during the opening cocktail reception. Additionally, the event will feature a raffle of donated items that will benefit the 2014 participating charity – Kidsave, a DC-based 501c3 organization with the mission to create change so forgotten orphanage and foster kids grow up in families and are connected to caring adults.
 
The evening’s Power Mom runway show featured event will open with a special live band performance by Stellar/Dove Award Nominated Gospo-Fella Recording Artist Tanya Dallas-Lewis and achildren’s runway presentation by Elizabeth St. John Couture. Participating Power Moms will be dressed in custom L~Shandi designs and jewelry by Carmen Eliam.

Just Imagine…The Annual Children’s Ball: The Clock Strikes Fun, chaired by M. Celeste Bruce and Anne Mead, is Imagination Stage’s Gala exclusively for children! This fun-filled afternoon will include a performance of Cinderella: the Remix, rooms full of unique activities, family-oriented raffle baskets and auction items, and a celebratory buffet reception.
 
Just Imagine…The Annual Children’s Ball: The Clock Strikes Fun takes place at Imagination Stage on Saturday, May 10, at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $80 for individuals,and family packages start at $275. Providing the theme for the event is Imagination Stage’s world premiere production of Cinderella: the Remix – a hip-hop version of the beloved fairytale set in the land of Hip-Hop-Hollywood, where girls are not allowed to DJ, only thing Cinderella wants to do. She disguises herself as a boy, and gets the gig to spin at J Prince’s super-cool Jam. Will she be found out when the clock strikes twelve?
 
After the performance, children and families are invited to participate in activities such as hip-hop dance lessons, chalk graffiti, and DJ-ing a happening dance party (with the magic of green screen). There will also be dancing, craft opportunities, and other exciting surprises.
 
Additionally, the Children’s Ball will include raffle baskets and silent auction items geared towards families and children, including behind-the-scenes opportunities at Imagination Stage, tickets for family-friendly activities and events, and other unique family experiences.
