Ice Champions LIVE @ The Gardens Ice House
Sep 15 @ 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Three-time U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and two-time Olympian Michael Weiss announced that the 9th Annual Michael Weiss Foundation “Ice Champions LIVE!” will take place on Sunday, September 15 at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD, beginning at 4:00 pm – bringing some of the brightest stars of figure skating to the Washington Baltimore area for a great cause. Tickets are now on sale at www.MichaelWeiss.org for this spectacular fundraiser, sponsored by Smucker’s and Pandora.

International superstars expected to participate include Olympic and World champion Ekaterina Gordeeva (marking her first appearance in Ice Champions Live!), as well as Bel Air, MD native Kimmie Meissner, former World and U.S. National Champion, Michael Weiss, Ryan Bradley, Adam Rippon and many other Olympic, World and U.S. National Champions (please see full list of skaters below, and watch for updates at www.MichaelWeiss.org).

Weiss, who lived in Olney, MD until high school, created this event nine years ago, each year bringing the most famous faces in figure skating to the Washington region in order to raise money for his foundation, and to further the dreams of even more local athletes with Olympic dreams.

Ice Champions LIVE! is like no other figure skating event, in large part due to the intimate setting of the venue. Weiss twists like a tornado in the air landing in front of the on-ice seats. Nowhere else can attendees experience the feel, the movement, and the actual speed of these skaters as at this exhibition. Each skater brings something different to the ice, providing an evening of chills and thrills, in a fun-filled program that has not been done except at this show.

The Michael Weiss Foundation (MWF) is a non-profit organization offering scholarships to aspiring Olympiads and currently is sponsoring 27 recipients. Knowing first hand how much it takes to get an athlete to the Olympics, Michael gives young skaters this opportunity through his scholarships so they can carry the torch for Olympics of the future. He established the Michael Weiss Foundation as a way of giving back to the sport that his given him so much.

In addition to the ice show, there will be a silent auction that features the skaters’ personal memorabilia. This silent auction also has hundreds of items both from the World Figure Skating Community as well as local artists, jewelers’, restaurants and much, much more.

The event will be held on Sunday, September 15 at 4:00 pm, at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD. Tickets are available at www.MichaelWeiss.org. LIMITED ON-ICE SEATING is available. Ticket prices range from $20-$50 with VIP opportunities – meet and socialize with some of the biggest stars in skating with the VIP package. Proceeds from the ticket sales will go to figure skating scholarships to be awarded later this year.

Book Discussion & Signing with Author James L. Swanson @ Ford's Theatre
Nov 13 @ 12:00 AM – 2:00 AM

Ford’s Theatre Society hosts a book discussion and signing with author James L. Swanson and moderator Sam Donaldson on November 12, 2013, at 7 p.m., at Ford’s Theatre (511 Tenth Street, NW). Following the discussion in the theatre, Swanson will sign copies of the book in the Ford’s Theatre lobby.

Fifty years ago, our country was jolted by tragedy: our 35th President was brutally murdered on an American street in front of hundreds of horrified witnesses. In “End of Days: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy” (publication date November 12, 2013), Edgar award-winning, New York Times-bestselling author of the highly acclaimed “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer,” James. L. Swanson offers a comprehensive understanding of this historic day, lending edge-of-your seat, storyteller’s mastery to the subject. With fascinating, colorful detail culled from vast historic resources, Swanson sets the stage for his central drama: the unfolding of the private final hours of John F. Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald as their destinies converge in a rifle’s crosshairs—one man bound for infamy, the other for myth. Told in Swanson’s signature, thrilling, ticking-clock narrative style, “End of Days” tracks the seemingly inevitable, and equally improbable, collision course between two men that would change history, devastate a hopeful generation, and spur one of our country’s greatest national mysteries. As the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s death approaches, Kennedy buffs looking for a deeper understanding as well as readers new to the subject will find End of Days to be a comprehensive, fascinating, emotional, riveting must-read.

Tickets for the discussion are free but required and may be reserved in person at the Ford’s Theatre Box Office, at www.fords.org or through Ticketmaster at (800) 982-2787 (Ticketmaster fees apply). Seating is available on a first-come basis. Books will be available for purchase on site at the Ford’s Theatre Gift Shop.
