Malmaison, the Georgetown waterfront warehouse turned modern event space, will be the scene of the intimate, costumed soiree ushering an end to summer.
Around 8pm on September 17th, Georgetown’s Malmaison event space will come alive with revelers in costumes, burlesque, live body painting, belly dancing, immersive art and more. The event, entitled Boudoir Bohème, will have a bevy of roaming live performers, and a DJ to move the venue’s guests with rhythmic world grooves.

Boudoir Bohème is a costumed soiree, inspired by the Battle of Hernani, Romanticism and Bohemians of 19th Century Paris. Although called a battle, the Battle of Hernani was actually an altercation which lasted several days between members of the bourgeoisie, or Classicals, and those of the Romantic movement which were made up of young artists, writers and painters. The Classicals who were considered the old guard establishment or status quo, enjoyed traditional ideals, literature and social norms; while the Romantics emphasized individualism, nature and imagination as a basis point, and embraced spontaneity and artistic emotion in their works and life.
The altercation took place during the opening night of Victor Hugo’s play Hernani, which was itself considered a radical attack on the established order. The ‘Romantic Army” attended the production in outlandish clothing, mocking the wealthy and mainstream, and were later remembered by Hugo as: “…wild whimsical characters, bearded, long-haired, dressed in every fashion except the reigning one, in pea-jackets, Spanish cloaks, in waistcoats a la Robespierre, in Henry III bonnets…and this in the middle of Paris in broad daylight”.
Boudoir Bohème is a celebration of creative freedoms and expression.. a night of mischief and immersive performances, where live music, dancing barefoot and intimate rituals are the norm. The night’s performers include:
DC legend and deep house pioneer Enea Diotaiuti who will be spinning a web of tantric music. His sets are known to put audiences in a tranquil yet manic trance, unique to his blend of modern yet instinctive melodies.
New York’s Danger Dame, Veronica Varlow brings her sensual mix of mesmerizing song and dance to the evening’s festivities. Referred to as a “modern-day Marlene Dietrich” Varlow has performed internationally and was recently named one of the 12 “Hottest Ladies of Burlesque” alongside such icons as Bettie Page, Lili St. Cyr and Sherry Britton. She has been featured on the Tonight show, Asylum Magazine and the New York Daily News.

Via the art and spectacle of dance, The Love Show, a theatrical dance company based in Brooklyn, weaves cabaret, ballet, rock, comedy and theater into creative performances. The Love Show has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, and TONY, as well as The New York Times.
Contortionist and star of The Drunken Yoga Show Lilin Lace will literally stretch the imaginations of Boudoir Bohème attendees with multiple performances through out the evening.

Washington National Opera (WNO) celebrates the return of free opera simulcasts to Nationals Park with title sponsor Mars, Incorporated with the M&M’S Opera in the Outfield performance of Mozart’s classic romantic comedy The Marriage of Figaro on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Gates open at 5 p.m. for “pregame” activities, and the opera will be broadcast live from the Kennedy Center Opera House to the high-definition NatsHD scoreboard at the ballpark at 7 p.m. Free seating will be available in the stands, while access to the outfield grass will be limited on a first-come, first-served basis when gates open at 5 p.m.
The Marriage of Figaro tells an upstairs/downstairs story of love, lust, seduction, infidelity, and ultimately, forgiveness, all set to some of the most sublime and memorable music ever written. The vibrant production, adapted from The Glimmerglass Festival, is directed by Peter Kazaras, whose La bohème was a hit of WNO’s 2014–2015 season. The opera is performed in Italian with English captions, making it easy to follow along with the story and music.
M&M’S Opera in the Outfield will take place rain or shine—in case of inclement weather, some covered seating is available. Regular concessions will be available throughout the ballpark.

Empire of the Sun, Passion Pit, Sylvan Esso, and Christine and the Queens will top the 2016 All Things Go Fall Classic bill at Yards Park at The Capitol Riverfront on Saturday, October 8. The tastemaker festival will also see performances from a number of rising stars, including Bishop Briggs, POP ETC, Sofi Tukker, and DC’s own Ace Cosgrove.
Following a sold-out event in 2015 at Union Market’s Dock5 space, the festival will move to Yards Park at the Capitol Riverfront, located just south of Capitol Hill and east of Nationals Park. The expansive green space is steps from DC’s iconic waterfront in the Navy Yard.
The All Things Go Fall Classic has quickly emerged as one of DC’s premier music festivals, as well as one of the only music events held within District lines, and features a hand-picked selection of emerging and internationally recognized artists for a truly exceptional live experience.

Josh Phillips and his team at Espita Mezcaleria, the Southern Mexican-inspired restaurant located in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC, invite guests to take part in one of Mexico’s great traditions, The Day of the Dead. On Tuesday, November 1st, Espita Mezcaleria will offer an honorary cocktail, Los Siete Misterios mezcal tasting and specialty dishes, available exclusively during dinner service. Face painting and custom temporary tattoos featuring designs from Espita artists will also be available for guests. Standout dishes available for this exclusive night of celebration include Morcilla Tlayuda, house-made Morcilla blood sausage, served on a crisp oversized tortilla with queso Oaxaca; Cochinita Cookies, pig-shaped cookies with piloncillo and cinnamon, as well as Mole Negro, lamb belly with hoja santa, piloncillo, Mexican oregano, chili ash with heirloom corn tortillas. For the perfect pairing, guests will have the opportunity to sample several varieties of Los Siete Misterios mezcal, along with an innovative cocktail called Flor de Muerto, or Death’s Flower. Priced at $13, the libation is made from a combination of mezcal, Cruzan Black Strap Rum, pineapple ash, lime juice and coconut syrup, garnished with an edible flower. “I wanted to find a way to combine life and death into one drink,” says Beverage Director/Partner Megan Barnes. “The edible flower represents life and the pineapple ash makes the drink completely black, representing death. This concoction is fairly balanced, leaning on the sweeter side as Day of the Dead is meant to be a day of celebration paying tribute to loved ones who have passed on.”

WHY: Of pre-Hispanic and pre-Christian origin, the Day of The Dead is one of the most important holidays in Mexican culture. In rural Mexico, people visit the cemetery where their loved ones are buried, bringing marigold flowers and candles to decorate gravesites. Toys for dead children and bottles of tequila to adults are also incorporated. Families sit on picnic blankets next to gravesites and eat the favorite food of their loved ones. Some families build altars in their homes, dedicating them to the dead. Altars are set up October 31st through November 2nd and are covered with offerings to the dead including flowers, fruits, vegetables, candles, incense, statues of saints, and photos of the deceased.
