Annual fundraiser supports previously homeless young mothers with children and survivors of human trafficking throughout DC communities

Who: In partnership with Bloomingdale’s, The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary of Washington, DC will host its 70th Anniversary Platinum Celebration Fashion Show Luncheon and Auction at The Ritz-Carlton Tysons’s Corner on Friday, October 25, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. News 4 Reporter Molette Green and News4 Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer are the tentative hosts for this annual signature fundraising event which helps women and children living throughout the community. Sherry Truhlar of Red Apple Auction will conduct the live auction—which in addition to event ticket sales and sponsorships, will raise funds to provide direct support to local programs including:
Turning Point Center—Founded in 1999, Turning Point Center is a transitional housing program meeting the needs of young homeless mothers and their children in the heart of Northwest Washington, DC. The program is open to women between the ages of 18 and 24. In addition to a safe and secure living environment—including fully furnished living quarters during their stay—the mothers receive independent living and life skills, encouragement to complete their G.E.D and beyond, and secure meaningful employment during the course of the program. Turning Point Center provides expert case management and skilled staff members to empower young mothers to take control of their lives.
Camp Happyland—For more than 50 years, this sprawling 220-acre residential camping facility in Central Virginia has offered activities for kids including outdoor swimming, fishing, paddle boating, arts and crafts, hiking, zip-lining, archery and more. Every summer, The Salvation Army gives 400 local children, mostly from low-income families, the opportunity to spend a week at Camp Happyland, providing them the opportunity to learn while having fun and fellowship away from the hustle and bustle of Washington, DC.
Anti-Human Trafficking Program—Founded in 2017, The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command’s new Anti-Human Trafficking Program provides a 24-hour emergency response, with a residential component that includes comprehensive services designed to bring restoration to women and men who have been exploited. The program offers a 24-hour hotline and intake process, emergency transportation to the shelter, emergency beds for adult victims, a comfortable living environment in a secure and undisclosed location and specially-trained staff to work with victims and survivors.

Visitors can learn about the Blackfeet Nation and the many aspects unique to Blackfeet culture through this two-day festival. The Blackfeet Reservation, located in northwestern Montana along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, is home to one of the 10 largest tribes in the United States, with more than 17,000 enrolled members. Throughout the festival weekend, Blackfeet artists, performers, historians and culture bearers will share demonstrations and performances. Highlights will include seasonally appropriate dances and stories, and demonstrations of making traditional regalia from the hides of buffalo, deer, elk and antelope. During the celebration, visitors can see traditional and contemporary artistic creations, including beadwork, handcrafted jewelry, quillwork, pottery, horsehair work, moccasins, carvings and baskets.

Pocahontas: Her Place in the Emerging Atlantic World and Nascent United States

Pocahontas lived and died not only in the maelstrom of the English–Powhatan encounter in the early 17th century, but at a singular moment in world history. She participated in the newly emerging Atlantic world. Her legacy helped shape Europeans’ conception of that world and the United States’ conception of itself for centuries. Why and how so? This presentation by National Museum of the American Indian Curator Cécile R. Ganteaume explores what is known about Pocahontas and her early impact on European and American thought.
Native American Heritage Day: Family Fun Day

BRANDBOX is teaming up with local Northern Virginia dog and cat rescue organization, Wolf Trap Animal Rescue, to raise funds and awareness for the organization and promote ‘Giving Tuesday’. BrandBox will host ‘Give a Little, Get a Snuggle’ in front of their retail incubation concept. This event will feature puppies, who will later be available for adoption through WTAR. A minimum donation of $5 (cash and major credit cards accepted) will procure donors 5 minutes of ‘Puppy Cuddles.’ 100% of the donations collected will directly benefit WTAR and assist in funding their adoption program in Northern Virginia. The puppies on-site will be available for adoption through WTAR’s adoption event on Saturday, December 7th, at The PetSmart in Tysons Corner. BrandBox by Macerich, at Tysons Corner Center, provides a turnkey approach for high-growth, first-to-market brands to open and operate stores, and scale physical retail as a complement to e-commerce.
On Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Main Hall of Union Station, a consortium of partners, including the Royal Norwegian Embassy, the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce—Mid-Atlantic Chapter, Washington Performing Arts, Union Station, and exclusive media partner WHUR 96.3 FM, will present the annual Norwegian Christmas Tree Lighting to the people of Washington, D.C. This beloved holiday event, which attracted 5,000 guests in 2018, is presented free to the public and will feature performances by The String Queens, whose members have collaborated with artists such as Ledisi, Janelle Monáe, and Common, and the Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir.
In one of Washington’s most popular holiday traditions, which began in 1997, Norway will present a Christmas tree to the people of Washington, D.C., in recognition of the strong friendship between Norway and the United States, and in gratitude for America’s assistance during and after World War II. The theme for this year’s tree is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These goals address the challenges we face as a global community and the 2030 target for achieving them. Specially designed ornaments and signage will represent the goals.

Featuring The String Queens, the Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. The 30-foot tree is decorated with 20,000 lights and ornaments representing all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Norway’s ambassador to the United States, Kåre R. Aas, will light the tree with a special guest, Member of the Norwegian Parliament Linda Helleland.

The Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center (RRB/ITC) is hosting the 8th Annual Embassy Showcase, Winternational, from 11 AM – 3 PM, Thursday, December 5, 2019. Presented by World Trade Center Washington, DC (WTCDC), over 50 embassies will be participating in this year’s event.
Last year, more than 4,000 guests attended this lively midday celebration of international culture, travel, tourism and trade. This year, there will be many opportunities for 1:1 interviews with diplomats, embassy exhibitors, sponsors and attendees. The free festival features a bustling global marketplace with more than 50 embassies promoting their countries through vibrant and interactive displays of visual art, food, handcrafts as well as travel and tourism.
The RRB/ITC is a preeminent forum in the heart of the nation’s capital advancing international commerce and cross-cultural dialogue. As a seamless, unifying framework, it provides a platform for building connections, fostering diplomacy, growing businesses, and creating a more prosperous U.S. and global economy. On Tuesday, December 10 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Franklin Hall will partner with Bells Brewery and Great Lakes Brewing Co. to host a Gingerbread House competition featuring some limited edition Christmas beers from both breweries. All participating teams will receive a gingerbread house kit to kick things off, but all are encouraged to bring additional supplies and decorating items to step up the competition. Teams can be any size and use any items they see fit for their final house decorations.
Judges from Franklin Hall and both breweries will decide first, second and third place winners and a prize pack for each will include vintage beers, brewery swag and merchandise and a gift certificate from Franklin Hall. Special brews on tap from Bells include Christmas Ale (Scotch Ale), To A Locomotive in Winter (Smoked Porter) and Bright White (Belgian White Ale), while Great Lakes will feature Christmas Ale, Ohio City Oatmeal Stout and Great Lakes IPA. As an entry fee to participate, each team member is asked to bring in one canned good or food item to support the work of the Capital Area Food Bank. Franklin Hall will host a food drive for the Capita Area Food Bank for the entire month of December and all patrons are encouraged to bring an item when visiting the bar throughout the holiday season.
