Cocktail Seminar @ Archipelago
Aug 7 @ 6:45 PM – 8:45 PM

What do the Daiquiri, Margarita, Jack Rose, Whiskey Sour, Sidecar, Cosmopolitan and others all have in common?  They’re all pretty much the same drink.  How’s that?  Indeed, they’re all “sour” cocktails, all built on a delicious and versatile three-part platform of something strong, something sweet, and something sour.  For example, take the Daiquiri: rum is the strong, sugar is the sweet, and lime is the sour.  Swap out brandy for the rum, triple sec for the sweet, and lemon for the sour, et voilà, you now have a Sidecar.  The Aviation has gin, maraschino liqueur, crème de violette, and lemon juice.  The Pisco Sour has pisco, sugar, egg white, bitters and lemon juice.  And so on and so on.  And once you master the basics of this amazingly versatile format, you can make many of the classics, and also try your hand at inventing new drinks of your own.  Join cocktail author and historian Philip Greene for an evening of cocktails, instruction, folklore, anecdotes and excerpts, learn the evolution of the sour (dating back to the British Royal Navy and its celebrated “grog”), the immortal (and communal) drink known as punch, New Orleans’ Brandy Crusta, the great Tiki movement of the 1930s – 1970s (and reborn today), to other great drinks and stories.  Guests will receive four sample-sized cocktails, plus light appetizers.

WHERE:  Archipelago, 1201 U St NW, Washington, DC 20009, convenient to U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Metro stop.

WHEN: Wednesday, August 7, 2019

TIME:  6:45 pm to 8:45 pm

COST: $50 per person

The festival will also feature an exciting new VIP Lounge where wristband holders will receive a loaded commemorative tote bag, mingle with VegFest speakers and chefs, and enjoy exclusive food and product samples, including a selection from Vegan Treats.

Since 2009, DC VegFest has been bringing the community together for a day of compassionate celebration that everyone can enjoy. This year’s exciting new location at Nats Park means even more fun: built-in shade, indoor restrooms, an awesome kids playground, and misting fans to beat the summer heat. “As we embark on another year hosting the DC VegFest, expecting 25,000 to join us, Compassion Over Killing is thrilled that Washington, DC is home to an abundance of delicious and nutritious plant-based food and is setting a positive tone for a much-needed national dialogue about the far-reaching impact of our food choices on the planet, our health, and animals,” says Erica Meier, Executive Director of Compassion Over Killing.

Vegan food will be served by dozens of vendors including Vegan Treats, Amsterdam Falafelshop, Brewing Good Coffee, Bakeshop DC, Ben & Jerry’s, and YogiDog.

Over 100 nonprofit and commercial exhibitors will set up shop for the day: Dr. Bronner’s, A Well-Fed World, Roots Market, Barnard Medical Center, TryVeg.com, and many more.

Drawing a line of 2,000 people before the start of the festival, free commemorative tote bags, stocked with gifts and samples from our sponsors, will be given out to the first 1,000 attendees. VegFest-goers will also be able to donate to receive exciting bonuses like a reserved tote bag or a chance to skip the line at the popular Vegan Treats booth.

Puppy Pool Party @ Fairmont Hotel
Aug 17 @ 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Every dog has their day, and Georgie*, Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown’s Canine Ambassador, is bow wowed to celebrate her first birthday with a puppy pool party on Saturday, August 17th.  From 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., humans and their canine companions are invited to the hotel’s interior courtyard for complimentary Peanut Butter Birthday Cake, and a copy of her new coloring book.

The dog days of summer are getting a little ruff, so Georgie’s four-legged friends can cool off in one of her puppy pools, while her two legged friends enjoy canine themed beverages such as the Pink Poodle the Spicy Chihuahua and Flying Dog Amber Ale for $6 each.  A bark bar will offer plenty of fresh water to keep all tails wagging.

In lieu of birthday gifts, Georgie suggests a donation to Guiding Eyes for the Blind at

*Georgie, a yellow Labrador puppy, was born on August 17, 2018 at Guiding Eyes for the Blind, with the aspiration of one day becoming a guide dog.  However, she was found to be way too friendly for that role.  Luckily, Mark Huntley the hotel’s general manager, knew she was better suited for the hospitality industry.  She spends her time in the lobby and courtyard greeting guests, visitors and holding special events.  Georgie is also currently in training to become a certified therapy dog.
Reservations for Georgie’s Birthday Pool Party can be made on Eventbrite at:  https://georgiesbirthdayatfairmontwashington.eventbrite.com
