For over 35 years, GRAMMY Award-winner Caetano Veloso has been a major musical, social, and cultural force in Brazil. The New York Times calls him “one of the greatest songwriters of the century.” Veloso’s latest project is a collaboration with his sons: Moreno, Zeca, and Tom. This legendary lineage performs an intimate, acoustic concert full of their favorite songs like “Um Canto de Afoxé Para o Bloco do Ilê,” and your favorite songs of Veloso’s like “Cucurrucucu Paloma,” “Sozinho,” and more. Veloso first became known for his participation in the Brazilian musical movement Tropicalismo, which encompassed theatre, poetry, and music in the 1960s, paving the way for pursuits in rock, pop, folk, and Bossa Nova.

Brewing in the City: A Look at DC and Chicago 19th Century Brewing History
What: In partnership with Chicago Brewseum a panel of historians including Heurich House Museum Executive Director, Kimberly Bender, Liz Garibay, Founder and Executive Director of the Chicago Brewseum, and Brian Alberts, Beer Historian and member of the National Advisory Board of the Chicago Brewseum, will discuss how breweries shape their cities. The discussion will be moderated by Jamaal Lemon of The Wayfarer Study, a project that looks at brewery impact on gentrification and immigration, as well as how ethnic identity was shaped by and contributed to the brewing industry.
When: Thursday, April 18th, 2019 from 6:00-8:00pm. The discussion with begin at 6:30 and conclude at 7:30, leaving time for guests to mingle with the speakers

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announces a concert featuring three-time Tony Award® winner Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Songs for a New World, The Last Five Years, The Bridges of Madison County) and 2018 Tony Award®winner Lindsay Mendez (Carousel, Wicked, Dogfight) on April 18, 2019 in the Eisenhower Theater. The evening will also feature the nine Musical Theater Fellows of KCACTF from across the United States and Helen Hayes Award winner Tracy Lynn Olivera (the Kennedy Center’s Me…Jane and Ragtime), one of the key teaching artists of the students’ residency at the Kennedy Center. The concert celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival’s National Festival, which will take place at the Kennedy Center April 15–20, 2019.
The National Festival includes short play readings featuring the finalists of the John Cauble Award for Outstanding Short Play and the KCACTF Ten-Minute Play Award; the National Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship auditions; master classes, visits to Arena Stage, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, the Shakespeare Theatre Company, and the opportunity to network with peers from across the nation and the Washington, D.C. theater community. The National Festival closes with the presentation of awards for excellence in production, directing, choreography, acting, writing, design, stage management, dramaturgy, and dramatic criticism.

Jason has been a staple of KCACTF over the years—his students have been past recipients of the Musical Theater Award and he served as a teaching artist for several Festivals. We are thrilled that high caliber artists such as Jason and Lindsay will be performing in the 50th anniversary tribute as well as meeting with the playwriting and musical theater students while in residence.”

VIDA Fitness is teaming up with DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to clean up the District while breaking a sweat for Earth Day. D.C residents are invited to join in the second annual Plogging event, picking up trash while jogging, as they run a preset two mile course beginning at Raymond Recreation Center.
Ploggers will be provided with trash bags and gloves to use as they run and pick up litter. VIDA Fitness and DPR will ensure appropriate disposal of all trash collected during the plogging event. This event is free and open to the public.
After plogging VIDA Fitness will provide snacks and drinks for all participants. Sign up is requested to ensure enough supplies are on hand for all ploggers.

WHERE: Starting at Raymond Recreation Center VIDA Fitness and DPR will lead joggers on a designated two mile route through Northwest DC.

On Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 7:30pm, Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik, known for his “dark-hued tone and razor-sharp technique” (The New York Times) makes his Kennedy Center debut presented by Washington Performing Arts at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Terrace Theater (2700 F Street NW). Kutik and pianist Anna Polonsky, lauded for her “dazzling virtuosity” (San Francisco Chronicle) will perform selections from Kutik’s ongoing project Music from the Suitcase including Stravinsky’s Divertimento from A Fairy’s Kiss; Prokofiev’s Waltz from Cinderella (arr. Fikhtengoltz); and Rubenstein’s Romance in E-flat Major, Op. 44, No. 1 (arr. Wieniawski); plus Schnittke’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 and Prokofiev’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 2. Following the concert, there will be a talkback with Kutik and NPR’s Nina Totenberg, who has followed Kutik’s career since his student days under her father’s tutelage.
They will also give the first Washington D.C. performances of two new works that are part of Kutik’s new commissioning project,Meditations on Family – Gity Razaz’s Cadenza for the Once Young and Andreia Pinto Correia’s Litania, commissioned for Yevgeny Kutik by Washington Performing Arts.

LEGAL IMMIGRANT
The set list for Tony Award-winner Alan Cumming’s provocative new concert show is as eclectic and idiosyncratic as Cumming himself. Legal Immigrant, a collection of musings on his 10 years as a US citizen, growing older, and what it feels like to be an immigrant in today’s America (regardless of your prefix) is a true, old-fashioned cabaret featuring a smorgasbord of genres. Ever wanted to hear Schubert and Peggy Lee together in one song? You will! Hits by Scottish treasures The Proclaimers also make an appearance, and there might even be a Disney Princess medley sung without a drop of irony.
With the rise of cat celebs like Grumpy Cat and Moshow the Rapper, combined with cat videos in every corner of the internet — it’s about time Washingtonians have an outlet to share their feline fervor with their neighbors. That’s why DC’s animal welfare organization, Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA), is hosting the 1st Annual Meow DC this coming spring.
This event is designed for everyone from the devoted cat lover to the fly-by feline fan. Kitty aficionados from all over the metro area can don their cat ears and themed outfits, purchase kitty-themed goods from the many local vendors, attend talks about everything from community cats to confusing kitty behavior, and even meet internet sensation Sunglass Cat! There also will be adorable kittens and sassy adult cats alike on hand for cuddles and adoption throughout the day. Plus, it doesn’t end there. Keep your cat ears on and attend the Meow DC After Party at The Pub & The People from 5-8pm where a percentage of sales will benefit HRA, as well as $1 from every Tito’s beverage. Oh, and did we mention there will be awesome giveaways!
And if that weren’t enough, the real attraction (the catnip, if you will) is that all proceeds benefit the amazing work HRA does year round for local DC cats, both indoor and outdoor. Each month, HRA helps nearly 400 local homeless animals get adopted and 565 animals get spayed or neutered. HRA field officers respond to 1,600 calls monthly, and HRA volunteers donate 2,400 hours every month. While HRA does incredible work for the vulnerable animals in our community, they still rely on the generosity of individuals and organizations throughout the DC metro area.

Learn how the next generation of Baltimore’s artists and leaders are harnessing the power of creativity to tell their stories. As part of the day’s activities, attendees can create their own museum memes, buttons, and custom banners, learn how to screen print with Jubilee Arts: Youth in Business, and make a personalized zine with Baltimore Youth Arts. Special guests include the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore Ceasefire, and Open Works. Performances include screenings with Wide Angle Youth Media, musical ensembles with two Arts Every Day schools, and the Lethal Ladies of Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women step team.
The day’s festivities include Behind the Façade, a program of original monologues by Baltimore School for the Arts theater students. Performed in 1 West Mount Vernon Place, this performance brings to life the range of people, enslaved and free, who made Mount Vernon their home in the years before and after the Civil War.
