Enjoy a “familiennachmittag” or family afternoon like they do in Munich, Germany. Capitol City invites beer-drinkers and festivalgoers alike to dress in traditional German garb and enjoy the tastes of authentic Bavarian brews, bratwurst and brezlen – the German-style pretzel. More than 65 local breweries will set up taps and share ale and lager samples with the thousands of anticipated guests from the DMV region.  Notable breweries include Mad Fox, James River, Fair Winds, Port City, Starr Hill, Heritage, Hardywood, Pleasure House, Adventure, O’Connor, Brothers, Jailbreak, Gordon Biersch, Flying Dog, DuClaw, Union, Blue Mountain, Adroit Theory, New District and Chaos Mountain. Capitol City will offer samples of its three feature fall beers, including the newly named Cursed Gourd, theSmoketoberfest and the classic Oktoberfest Lager. In addition to sampling from more than 100 beer taps, festivalgoers can enjoy Alpine music while they taste authentic German cuisine and other American fare from various local eateries.
The $30 admission ticket for beer drinkers includes an official Oktoberfest wristband, a Capitol City branded tasting glass, and 10 drink tickets. Additional drink tickets are available for purchase for $1 each with a five-ticket minimum. Admission is free for non-drinkers. Beer-drinkers must be 21+ to purchase a ticket.
Capitol City’s Oktoberfest Beer Selections:
Cursed Gourd – brewed with chocolate, honey, and crystal malts and flaked oats for a smooth finish. Brown sugar, cinnamon, clover, ginger, nutmeg and allspice are all in the boil in addition to 150 lbs. of “gourd-y” goodness.
Cursed Gourd – A hearty spin on a traditional Marzen, this copper beer is packed with six kinds of malt and noble hops. Our blend of beechwood-smoked barley and oak-smoked wheat gives a pleasant smoky character that is ideal with brats, bacon, or any grilled meats. Recommended in The Washingtonian as one of “Five Oktoberfest Beers to Try Near Washington!”
Oktoberfest Lager – An easy- drinking fall lager, brewed with Munich, Abbey, and Carahell malt, then moderately hopped with noble German hops.  Full and complex malt profile, lovely copper hue; perfect for the festival season!

WHY:             South Street Brewery was purchased in 2014 by Blue Mountain Brewery, whose owners have a deep connection with this Charlottesville’s longest-running brewery and pub. Two of Blue Mountain’s founders, Mandi and Taylor Smack, both worked for South Street over a decade ago, Taylor having been the brewer from late 2001 until early 2007. Our company is committed to maintaining and revitalizing this important Charlottesville landmark and gathering place.  Under new owners, the brewery has expanded their beer offerings, including venerated South Street originals that helped shape the Central Virginia beer scene, as well as new beers reflecting the diversity and experimentation that is the heart of American craft brewing.  Additionally, South Street brewpub offerings lean heavily toward local artisans, from beef to bread, from tofu to produce and everything in between, reflecting our belief that Charlottesville, Virginia is the best place on Earth to live, drink and eat.
