Refugees International 34th Annual Dinner Gala @ National Building Museum
May 2 @ 11:00 PM – May 3 @ 12:00 AM

Refugees International’s annual Anniversary Dinner is an exclusive awards ceremony and celebration honoring individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and commitment to humanitarian action. The evening includes the presentation of the McCall-Pierpaoli Award and special honors to those who labor to improve the lives of displaced people and remedy displacement crises across the world.

This year, Refugees International is pleased to present the McCall-Pierpaoli Award to Nobel Peace Laureate José Ramos-Horta, whose work as Prime Minister and President of East Timor brought peace and stability to an area of the world long in need of leadership on behalf of the marginalized. Working both within and alongside the United Nations, he has proven to be an effective bridge builder and peacemaker, and brought East Timor, Indonesia and Australia together to forge a new state. Currently he serves as United Nations Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau.

The Congressional Leadership Award recognizes Members of Congress for their support of issues that have critical impacts on refugees and displaced people. Past recipients include the late Congressman Donald Payne (D-NJ), Congressmen Chris
Smith (R-NJ), the late Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT).

The Richard C. Holbrooke Leadership Award recognizes those in local civil society who are the unsung heroes of neglected displacement crises. It is a tribute to Ambassador Holbrooke’s spirit as a great American statesman, consummate diplomat, and true humanitarian. The award was first given in 2011 to Amina Ali.

RAMMYs @ Marriott Wardman Park Hotel
Jun 23 @ 10:00 PM – Jun 24 @ 2:00 AM
Tickets are now on sale for the DC area’s hottest foodie fete, the 31st annual RAMMY Awards, celebrating the city’s vibrant restaurant industry. Attended by the region’s finest culinary talent and buzzworthy power players, this year’s event offers an expanded awards ceremony format, honoring the area’s top dining destinations and professionals at a “Restaurants in Bloom”-themed gala. Tickets can be purchased for the 2013 RAMMY Awards taking place at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC on Sunday, June 23rd now by visiting www.therammys.org.

The 2013 RAMMY Awards Gala returns again this year for a festive evening built around the idea that in Metropolitan Washington, restaurants aren’t just thriving, they are experiencing a region-wide economic boom with new neighborhoods in bloom and the industry as a whole growing its vast footprint. According to the National Restaurant Association, restaurants in the District alone are projected to generate sales of approximately $2.7 billion in 2013.

The ‘Restaurants in Bloom’ theme is open to interpretation and the creative black tie attire will be anyone’s guess  for an evening honoring these outstanding chefs, restaurateurs and industry professionals who have made the DC region’s food scene the blooming dining destination that it is.

This year, the awards ceremony format has expanded to three times its previous size, to properly accommodate the 1600+ bartenders, restaurateurs and other industry professionals in attendance. The highly anticipated ceremony will announce coveted honors such as “Chef of the Year,” “Best New Restaurant” and “Rising Culinary Star” which are bestowed to only the city’s top restaurant leaders.

“The hard work, vision and passion from these talented restaurateurs and culinary professionals has planted the seeds for this now ‘blooming’ dining scene we have here in Washington, DC,” said Kathy Hollinger, president of the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW). “The growth of the restaurant community really speaks to the growth of the region and we look forward to honoring this great industry on June 23.”

The RAMMYS begin with a cocktail reception at 6 pm, hosted by Boxwood Estate Winery and partners in the Virginia wine and beverage industry. The awards ceremony will follow at 7 pm with one hour of exciting awards presentations followed by a buffet-style dinner featuring the foods and wines of Chile and an exciting menu from Meat and Livestock Australia, just to name a few. The finalists for Beverage/Mixology program of the year will serve their RAMMY cocktails at specialty bars throughout the ballroom and a live band will set the scene for dancing and festivities until midnight.

Tickets to the RAMMYS are available for $225 for RAMW members, $300 for non-members, and may be purchased online at www.therammys.org, by calling 202.331.5990 or by email at therammys@ramw.org.
