State of Play

When a flick is filmed (and about DC) and one of the main characters is a blogger, you know it’s on K Street Kate’s must-see movie list!

My rainy Sunday included a trip to the Lowe’s cineplex to see if this film does our fair city justice. Apart from some simple goofs, it’s great! Russell Crowe and Rachel McAdams play a team of investigative reporters (she’s the blogger – and though she comes to respect the value and importance of the printed word, also does an ok job of showing why instant copy can be effective and efficient). They are out to get the scoop – and solve the murder of a Congressman’s mistress.

Half of the fun of the movie for me was figuring out where each scene was filmed. Not all of the sequences actually run together logically – and I think one apartment complex was actually HUD – but some local stores got some extra publicity, and the Washington Times has to be happy that the producers basically copied their newsroom and typefont to create the fictional Washington Globe.

I’m no movie critic, but I left the theatre entertained and, as always, proud to be a Washingtonian. Check it out at theatres across town, playing now.
