Gold Cup

The weather did end up cooperating with the 84th running of the Virginia Gold Cup Races. The droplets didn’t start to fall until the cars were being packed up and the spectators (those that cared) were safely in their cars starting the hour or so trip back to the city.

Though generally overcast, it was a pleasant day for the six horse races and accompanying merriment that define the annual Spring tradition. Admittedly, few attending could probably tell you who won the signature race – and the $75,000 prize. The cocktails and clothes were entertainment enough, despite the rest of the action on Great Meadow!

The race was between two previous winners: 2007’s champion, Salmo, was poised to beat defending champion from 2008, Bubble Economy – and he did! Salmo jumped beautifully; it was no surprise that he took home the Cup. At the Derby on the other hand… how wonderful would it be if we could crush the odds as Mine that Bird did!
