Kate Michael, @kstreetkate, is a Writer/Model/On-Camera Host and Event Emcee. Notable as the Founder and current Editor-At-Large of K Street Magazine, Kate started the site while serving as Miss District of Columbia 2006 and competing in Miss America (2007). Currently, Kate works as a professional spokesperson and model, walking the runway for such industry icons as Valentino, Derek Lam, Naeem Kahn and Oscar de la Renta. Her media portfolio includes a spread in Elle magazine and features on Inside Edition and BBC World News’ “The Real Cities” series. Roche Salon/Shu Uemura

Did you know Mayor Adrian Fenty announced October 25th Good Hair Day in the District?

It’s hard to have a good hair day in the pouring rain, but if anyone can, it’s Roche Salon. Last night owner Dennis Roche teamed with Shu Uemura to raise funds for breast cancer survivors – in particular the Young Survivor’s Coalition. As the Good Hair Day Celebration got underway, the rain was forgiven and forgotten.

Models dressed as geishas with elaborate hair designs floated around the spacious salon while guests noshed on savory sushi and sipped sparkling saki. Me, I opted for the plum wine.

My superficial favorite part of a party at Roche is the use of the hair washing sinks for beer coolers. But I’ll also admit that I love that Dennis knows how to party for a purpose – and cancer survival is a cause close to his heart.
