Handbag Designer Rebecca Minkoff: From Scratch to Saks

Handbag designer Rebecca Minkoff’s parents said if she was going to be an entrepreneur, she as going to have to put her heart and soul into it… by herself.   They would give full support, unless it came from the checkbook.

At her personal appearance at Saks in Tysons Saturday afternoon, she told coveted handbag hounds that she moved to NYC from San Diego without financial support, but she’s better for it.  Making handbags with an intern on her living room floor, she often couldn’t pay her rent and had to avoid a roommate who threatened to put her on the streets.

But Minkoff (at left with author) – barely 30 – now welcomes the success that came from such scrambling beginnings.  She has taken her bags, and her business, from her tiny NYC living room floor to stores like Saks 5th Avenue, which will be carrying her line nationwide this Fall.
