Gospel Greats Combat Cancer

Singing stars were spotted Sunday evening at the historic Lincoln Theatre on U St.  Stellar Award winners Kurt Carr and Isaiah Thomas, Vanessa Williams, Patrick Lundy and the Ministers of Music, Nolan Williams and the Voices of inSpiration and the Howard University Chapel Choir came together to perform at Partnering for Life, a benefit gospel concert hosted by the American Cancer Society and NEWorks Productions.
Television actor Malik Yoba (at left) emceed the event, which focused on increasing cancer awareness in the African American community.  Despite decreases in overall cancer death rates across all racial and ethnic groups since the early 1990s, racial disparities in cancer mortality persist — with African Americans having the highest risk of all major ethnic groups in the United States of being diagnosed with and dying of cancer.

Funds raised at the concert supported the American Cancer Society’s cancer disparities reduction initiatives to prevent and detect cancer, as well as improve the quality of life for those affected by cancer.
