So Good: ‘A Beautiful Noise’ at National Theatre

Fans of musical artist Neil Diamond won’t want to miss ‘A Beautiful Noise,’ playing at the National Theatre through December 8th,

The play, while it has a serious undertone that deals directly with Diamond’s Parkinson’s diagnosis that required him to stop touring and the toll that his career took on his family life, is also a nod to his sensational showmanship.

Created in collaboration with Diamond himself, ‘A Beautiful Noise’ offers a rare glimpse into the chart topper’s personal life that is fascinating: Who knew he first signed with the mob?? and often stinging: Two ex-wives have their stories to tell. And the style is also sometimes frustrating, with “modern-day” therapy sessions interrupting the flow of the musical storytelling.

In the absence of Diamond singing himself, Nick Fradiani (portraying Neil – Then) is truly superb; and members of the traveling cast were exceptional. You couldn’t take your eyes off Cooper Clack’s energy in the dance scenes or Spencer Donovan Jones in his “Shilo” solo.

In brief, ‘A Beautiful Noise’ is, like so many shows these days, a biopic about the singer’s life, using his songs as a background track. And while Diamond himself is an interesting main character, the best part is the audience participation as Diamond’s catalog of classics plays out — 25 are included in the play — including chart-busting hits like “America,” “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and “Sweet Caroline.”

Go see it – and sing along.

‘A Beautiful Noise” is at Broadway at the National, at National Theatre, through Dec. 8, 2024.
