MoCo’s New Song Dog Distillery a Grain-to-Glass Gem

After more than a decade of dreaming, distilling, and developing the land, longtime DC residents Megan Draheim and David Harris are finally ready to raise a glass. Their labor of love, Song Dog Farm Distillery, opened in mid-October, bringing a fresh pour of locally rooted craftsmanship to the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve (18100 Bucklodge Road).

This 29-acre farm distillery offers on-site production of “bourbon,” rye, gin, vodka, liqueurs, and ready-to-pour cocktails, all created from grains grown on the property and sourced from nearby farms. The result? A true “grain-to-glass” experience that celebrates the land and the people who tend it.

The distillery’s tasting room and cocktail bar feature creations designed by Danny Childs, author of Slow Drinks and known for his inventive approach to seasonal, locally inspired beverages. Visitors can enjoy cocktail flights, zero-proof options, and snacks ranging from artisanal charcuterie and dips to gourmet sandwiches and rotating food trucks.

Sustainability sits at the heart of Song Dog’s mission. The distillery is powered by American-made equipment, including a custom-built continuous still hand-forged in Montana and a German CARL pot still designed specifically for whiskey production. Every detail reflects an appreciation for craft and authenticity, from field to fermenter. And even the spiritual side of spirits gets attention; Song Dog’s production is certified kosher by the Chicago Rabbinical Council.

“This project has been a passion and a labor of love for us for over a decade,” said co-founder Megan Draheim, a conservation ecologist whose environmental expertise helped shape the distillery’s sustainable ethos. “Our farm distillery is an opportunity to build community and bring people together.”
