Hallelujah! Highest Praise for “Sister Act” at Ford’s Theatre
Ford’s Theatre has struck musical gold with its vibrant production of Sister Act, running now through May 17, 2025. Under the expert direction and choreography of Jeff Calhoun and the musical direction of William Yanesh, this rousing adaptation of the beloved 1992 film delivers laughter, heart, and show-stopping numbers that have audiences tapping their toes and laughing out loud. Preach!
The show’s main star is the dazzling Nia Savoy-Dock as Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer on the run who finds unlikely sanctuary in a convent under ‘witness protection.’ Savoy-Dock’s commanding stage presence and powerhouse vocals breathe fresh life into the role — and it’s undoubtedly hard to follow in Whoopi Goldberg’s footsteps. She effortlessly captures Deloris’s transformation from self-serving diva to selfless teammate/sister.

Sherri L. Edelen provides a perfect counterpoint as the no-nonsense Mother Superior, whose initial resistance to Deloris makes their eventual camaraderie all the more rewarding. Meanwhile, Kanysha Williams charms as Sister Mary Robert, the timid postulant whose journey of self-discovery provides one of the production’s most moving moments.
The musical, with its score by Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Little Shop of Horrors) and lyrics by Glenn Slater, bursts with energy, seamlessly blending disco, gospel, and traditional Broadway stylings. Standout numbers like Raise Your Voice and Take Me to Heaven soar under Yanesh’s musical direction, backed by a dynamite ensemble whose harmonies are as tight as their comedic timing.

Visually, the production is a sort of miraculous undertaking: one set that transforms into multiple locations and characters that serve double – or quadruple – roles. And Calhoun’s choreography keeps the energy high, saving some of the best comedic moments for the men and allowing even the most pious nuns to cut loose when the moment calls for it.
Those standing ovations are earned! (Super shout-out to Joe Mallon as Eddie — wow, just wow.)

Ultimately, Sister Act is more than just a feel-good musical—it’s a celebration of music’s ability to uplift, unite, and inspire. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the film or new to the story, Ford’s Theatre’s exuberant take on this Tony-nominated hit is a divine delight from start to finish.
Sister Act is on stage at Ford’s Theatre through May 17. Run time is approximately two hours and 30 minutes, with a 15-minute intermission. Recommended for ages 12 and older.
