The video will be followed by a panel discussion with three SBANA member brewers relating their passion for sake and sake-making: Mr. Andrew Centofante of North American Sake Brewery (Charlottesville, VA); Ms. Euka Isawa of Katsuyama (Miyagi, Japan) and Mr. Patrick Shearer of Ben’s American Sake (Asheville, NC). The March 23 event will be held in conjunction with the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the nation’s greatest springtime celebration commemorating the enduring friendship between the people of Japan and the United States.

Fit for a Queen: Perkins Harnly, Victorian Style and Queer Identity in Midcentury America

Born on a hardscrabble Nebraska farm, artist Perkins Harnly crossed paths with legendary celebrities and colorful characters while visiting famous graveyards, winning prizes at drag balls and toiling in an upscale Los Angeles cafeteria. From the 1930s on, Harnly produced paintings of exuberantly overstuffed Victorian rooms embedded with sly jokes alluding to his own queer selfhood. Looking through the lenses of Harnly’s life and art, this talk considers the role of the Victorian interior as metaphorical closet that served as a refuge from the judgment and dangers of the outside world. Kate Clarke Lemay, Portrait Gallery acting senior historian, will moderate the Q&A. This program is a part of the Tommie L. Pegues and Donald A. Capoccia Conversation Series in LGBTQ+ Portraiture and is hosted by PORTAL, the Portrait Gallery’s Scholarly Center.
WHAT BMA x NMWA: CounterstoryJoin us for BMA x NMWA, a livestreamed monthly talk show co-presented by The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) and the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA). In this episode, educators from both museums welcome Filipino-American artist Stephanie Syjuco and Hannah Shambroom, co-curator of the special exhibition Sonya Clark: Tatter, Bristle, and Mend, on view at NMWA through May 31, 2021. Syjuco discusses her three-part installation Stephanie Syjuco: Vanishing Point (Overlay), on view at the BMA through May 16, 2021, which examines how images construct and fortify white supremacy and exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. Shambroom shares mixed-media sculptures by artist Sonya Clark that address race and visibility, explore Blackness and redress history. Nay Yard based Puerto Rican restaurant La Famosa will host a pop-up in partnership with Other Half Brewing in Ivy City on Sunday, May 16th from 12 – 6 p.m. Chef Joancarlo Parkhurst and team will serve a lineup of Puerto Rican snacks such as Alcapurrias de Carne (plantain and yuca fritters stuffed with a savory beef picadillo OR impossible meat filling) and Bacalaito (salt cod fritter served with crema verde) on the brewery’s outdoor covered deck.
The brewery currently does not accept reservations and all outdoor seating will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Other Half Brewing is located at 1401 Okie Street NE, Washington, D.C. 20002.
