Taste of DC will take over Pennsylvania Avenue Saturday, October 10 and Sunday October 11, 2015. The Mid-Atlantic’s largest culinary festival, established in 1989, will bring to America’s Main Street two days of the region’s very best food, drink and entertainment.

Attendees will be able to sample from more than 60 of the region’s most popular restaurants, taste over 50 brews in the Beer Garden, try more than 50 wines on the Taste of DC Wine Walk and enjoy nonstop entertainment on three different stages. Among the restaurants: Morton’s, Ben’s Chili Bowl, Carmine’s, Smoke & Barrel, Del Frisco’s, Tortilla Coast, CRAVE Bethesda plus more than a dozen food trucks.

Contestants include some of the world’s most famous professional eaters including defending Chili Eating champ Joey “Jaws” Chestnut and Sonya “The Black Widow” vying for the World Championship title. On Thursday, October 22, at 7 p.m., the National Archives hosts a special panel discussion on the history and impact of alcohol regulation. Author and alcohol historian Garrett Peck (The Prohibition Hangover) will moderate a discussion on the origins, effects, and current debate over the regulation of alcohol—exploring topics including the three-tier system of alcohol distribution, recent industry changes, and privatization of state controlled outlets. Panelists will include Jim Sgueo, President and CEO of the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association; T. Kelley Spillane, Senior Vice President of Global Sales, Castle Brands; and Brien Fox, Chairman of the Board, Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America.
This event is free and open to the public and will take place in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Museum in Washington, DC, and streamedlive on YouTube. Tickets are on sale now for the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s frighteningly fun adults-only Halloween event, Night of the Living Zoo. The event, hosted by Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ), will be held Friday, October 30, from 5:30 to 10 pm. With live music, craft beer, food trucks, a costume contest, performance artists, and DJ Squirrel spinning spooky beats, it’s a wicked night of fun, all in the name of conservation.
“If you think the Zoo is wild during the day, just wait until the sun goes down,” said Lynn Mento, Executive Director of Friends of the National Zoo. “Night of the Living Zoo is a great way to support wildlife conservation and enjoy a night of Halloween fun with your friends.”
For guests who’d like to showcase their creativity beyond their costume, new this year FONZ will host a Day of the Dead contest where participants will create elaborately decorated scenes to be displayed and judged at the event. Pathmakers: Women in Art, Craft, and Design, Midcentury and Today illuminates the vital contributions of women to midcentury visual culture and their use of craft materials—especially clay, fiber and metals—to explore concepts of Modernism. Featuring more than 80 works, this exhibition focuses on women working at midcentury, as well as contemporary artists whose work reflects the influence of their predecessors.
