Bastille Day @ Wunder Garten
Jul 11 @ 3:00 PM – 10:00 PM

L’Enfant Café is proud to announce the 11h annual Bastille Day party, a cultural celebration of all things French, on Saturday, July 11 from 3pm to 10pm. After celebrating the 10th anniversary on Vernon St last year, the folks at L’Enfant have decided to re-locate the fête to sister venue, Wunder Garten (150 M St NE), the all new beer garden space in NoMa.

Entry to this year’s event and D.C.s biggest masquerade ball is $7. Advance ticket purchase is required and capacity is limited. Purchase online through www.lenfantcafe.com or www.wundergartendc.com. Guests will storm the Bastille via M St NE, just steps from the NoMa metro stop (Red Line).

The memorable performances have also moved to the new location, including can-can dancers, a New Orleans style brass marching band, burlesque dancers and the royal guests of honor, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.

The signature folly of the event, the world-famous ‘French Maid Relay Race,’ will take place at approximately 6pm in which racers, men and women, must each wear the risqué black and white maid costume while running back and forth across the street in order to fill a Champagne glass with soup spoons of water. Très chic! Contenders must pre-purchase a costume, with ticket purchase, before the limited supply is sold out.

Enjoy this full line up of entertainment or entertain yourself on the dance floor while listening to a host of live DJs and musical guests. Throughout the event, revelers have the option to sip on the official beer of Bastille Day, Stella Artois, or enjoy Leffe, Stella Cidre, red and white wine, and Champagne. DC Slices and Crepes Parfait food trucks will be on hand to dish out delicious snacks.

Like any good revolution, the celebration doesn’t end there. For the real Bastille Day, the team invites you back to where it all began: L’Enfant Café. On Tuesday, July 14, the French restaurant will offer happy hour from open to close, featuring $5 Stella Artois, red, white and sparkling wine, and highballs. A DJ will provide entertainment while French maids offer fantastique service (read: more entertainment)

LEnfant Café is a European-style restaurant located at 18th and U Street NW, between Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan. It is known for its casual French-influenced menu, offers a full bar, and Saturday and Sunday brunch. LEnfant is home to La Boum, a popular Saturday afternoon brunch party. With its cozy interior and an expanded sidewalk patio with flower boxes, LEnfant Caféis DC’s shortcut to Paris.

An evening with NOLA Jazz/Funk Sextet, Naughty Professor @ Gypsy Sally's
Jul 11 @ 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Gypsy Sally’s is pleased to present an evening with NOLA jazz/funk sextet, Naughty Professor who are currently on tour supporting their April 2015 release, Out On A Limb, on Saturday, July 11! DC’s own funk/ soul outfit, Aztec Sun will open!

Naughty Professor

Naughty Professor is a forward thinking music endeavor pioneered by six young musicians from around the country, now anchored in New Orleans, Louisiana. Formed in 2011, the band’s mission was to embody the jazz-influenced party culture of the Big Easy in a constantly evolving, high energy funk/soul outfit. Naughty Professors’ live performances, which weave together complex compositions and loose individual improvisation, quickly commanded the attention of many notable musicians in town, including George Porter Jr., Galactic, and The Revivalists. With fresh recorded material in the works and a rigorous tour schedule planned for 2014 and beyond, Naughty Professor is poised to soon become the next household name associated with the echelon of New Orleans music.

Aztec Sun

With a fiery-hot, funky beat that echoes with the nostalgia of neo-soul and just enough grit to keep you hip thrustin’ and toe tappin’, Washington D.C.’s Aztec Sun’s voltaic performances are the result of the band’s infectious melodies and the rare dynamism of the musicians creating them.
From its inception in 2013, Aztec Sun has grown into an 8-piece ensemble with a sound that evokes a classic ’70s feel played in a new school approach. The band’s culturally diverse background and timelessness of the band’s musical influences create their sound. It can be said that whether it’s the old-school R&B seduction, uptown funky grooves, or a pop-alicious hit, there’s something for everyone!

About Bastille Day

Bastille Day, the French national holiday, commemorates the storming of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July 1789 and marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille was a prison and a symbol of the absolute and arbitrary power of Louis the 16th’s Ancient Regime. By capturing this symbol, the people signaled that the king’s power was no longer absolute: power should be based on the Nation and be limited by a separation of powers.

The local landmark brings R&B, neo soul, and jazz artists Ángela Winbush, Kindred The Family Soul, and Chelsey Green—a cross-section of the genre’s past, present, and future—to Strathmore for its 50th anniversary celebration on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 8 p.m. The evening’s lineup is the continuation of a long collaborative relationship between Blues Alley and Strathmore, and includes Strathmore Artist in Residence alumna Chelsey Greene. The trio of acts is anchored by ’80s R&B icon and Howard University alumna Ángela Winbush. She counts among her credits solo hits such as the number one “Angel,” as well as songs from her musical duo René & Angela, such as “Save Your Love (For #1)” and “Your Smile.”  Winbush has informed the work of innumerable R&B and hip-hop artists, including The Notorious B.I.G., Foxy Brown, rapper Sylk-E. Fyne, and singer Avant. Winbush and former partner René Moore, of René & Angela, have the distinction of being one of the first R&B acts to prominently incorporate rap in a popular R&B song. Winbush has also established herself as a versatile, multitalented artist, finding success as a songwriter, arranger, producer, and session musician.

Grammy nominated neo soul duo Kindred the Family Soul is comprised of the husband-and-wife team of Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon. They rose from the Philadelphia neo soul movement, and were discovered by singer Jill Scott. Rooted in soul and gospel, Kindred incorporates nuanced contemporary sounds into their music, advancing the genre forward while building a core audience appreciative of their devotion to a more mature R&B sound.

Similarly innovative is violinist and Strathmore Artist in Residence alumna, violinist Chelsey Green. The Billboard charting artist fuses traditional classical violin technique with pop, jazz, and R&B genre influences. A doctoral candidate at The University of Maryland College Park, Green is early in a career that has already been met with great success, including a performance on The Late Show with David Letterman as well as engagements at Carnegie Hall, Theater at Madison Square Garden, the BET Honors Dinner, Essence Music Festival, The Howard Theatre, Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and, of course, Blues Alley and Strathmore. She has shared stages with Stevie Wonder, Maysa, MC Lyte, Chrisette Michele, J.Cole, and Questlove and Black Thought of The Roots.

‘Young and Crazy’ — at his disposal and an entertainer’s sensibility, the singer-guitarist came off like a headliner in the making.”ROLLING STONE COUNTRY

Talented singer-guitarist Frankie Ballard, who Rolling Stone hails as “required listening,” is on the rise with his current album SUNSHINE & WHISKEY (Warner Bros. Records) delivering consecutive #1, GOLD-certified smashes “Helluva Life” and “Sunshine & Whiskey” and debuting Top 5 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart upon release. Moving to Nashville in 2009 from Battle Creek, MI, to pursue music, Ballard drew on his working class values, performing every chance he could, honing his guitar and songwriting skills to create a unique blend of blues-infused, country rock. He steadily built a loyal fan base and took the time to grow as an artist and an individual. All of these experiences culminated in selling over 1.5 million tracks to date. CapitalBop Block Party @ Logan Fringe Arts Space
Aug 9 @ 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM
CapitalBop and Capital Fringe, two of D.C.’s most innovative presenters, will team up for an outdoor concert featuring a lineup of cutting-edge, dance-inducing bands at the nexus of jazz, electronic music and neo-soul. On August 9, CapitalBop and Capital Fringe present the second annual CapitalBop Block Party on the plaza outside Capital Fringe’s headquarters on Florida Avenue NE.

World-famous jazz fusion star Marc Cary (#1 Rising Star Electric Keyboardist, 2014 DownBeat critics poll) will headline with his electronic/world/jazz project Rhodes Ahead. Also on the bill are two outstanding up-and-coming DMV bands: neo-soul heavy-hitters The Moment and hip-hop/electronic experimenters Nag Champa. The Block Party is the third installment of CapitalBop’s Traveling Loft series, presented with support from the DC Commisison on the Arts & Humanities.
Cary performed with Rhodes Ahead last summer at the first CapitalBop Block Party, held during the DC Jazz Fest at the Atlantic Plumbing Lot near U Street. Since then, Rhodes Ahead has received a flood of acclaim around its recently released album, Rhodes Ahead, Vol. 2 (Motéma)The record was hailed by theGuardian as “a bracing blend of old and new steered by a strong musical character [and] laid-back cool,” and the New York Times marveled: “There isn’t much in the modern-jazz-musician tool kit that Marc Cary hasn’t mastered, but he has a particular subspecialty in the area of groove.”
For next month’s Block Party, Cary – a D.C. native who grew up playing go-go before relocating to New York and becoming a world-renowned jazz musician – teamed up with CapitalBop to assemble the lineup. Cary and the CapitalBop team chose two fresh bands gaining renown in the D.C. area. The Moment is a neo-soul group playing original compositions and renditions of pop hits, led by drummer Domo “Youngman” Lee. Nag Champa is the brainchild of D.C.-based beat producer Jamal Gray and drummer Allen Jones. In just over a year, the group has accrued a devoted following among D.C.’s most passionate music listeners.

The Block Party will take place in a warm, Sunday-afternoon setting in the courtyard at the Logan Fringe Arts Space, with drinks served at the bar. A special bourbon-and-bitters cocktail, “Honey, I’m Home,” will be available at just $9 for a pint glass. It will be an energizing, dance-inducing day of music—and an exciting way to spend a summer afternoon, whether folks are coming from brunch, from church, or just rolling out of bed.

Plus: Marc Cary will lead a free go-go/jazz master class for youth at Union Arts on the morning of Aug. 9. Info on that program is available here, and it will run from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
