2015 Washington DC Electric Vehicle Grand Prix @ RFK Stadium
May 16 @ 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Twenty-three single-passenger electric vehicles built by high school students from the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia will compete in the 2015 Washington DC Electric Vehicle Grand Prix (EV Grand Prix) at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Fairgrounds on Saturday May 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) and Pepco are co-sponsors of this year’s event, which is organized by Global EEE (Education, Energy, and Environment). DDOE is hosting the competition in Washington, DC in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) and the District of Columbia Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU). Local high school competitors include Dunbar, Friendship Collegiate Academy, Friendship Tech Prep Academy, McKinley Tech, Phelps, Roosevelt, School Without Walls, Sidwell Friends School, and Wilson in the District along with Wheaton, Clarksburg, Sandy Spring Friends, and High Point high schools in suburban Maryland. Hereford High School, Chesapeake High School, and Perry Hall from Baltimore County will be in the race, as will schools from Virginia.

This innovative, hands-on educational program teaches students to apply engineering, science, mathematics, and strategy as they construct and race their battery-powered electric cars. EV Grand Prix cars are specifically designed and must meet stringent safety regulations. The single-person, lightweight, aerodynamic, high-efficiency vehicles are coming to test their mettle in an hour-long race, on a challenging formula-style race course, using only energy stored in their batteries.

“We are thrilled to host the third annual DC EV Grand Prix,” said District Department of the Environment Director, Tommy Wells. “This program exposes students to energy conservation and technology and provides important educational and training opportunities. The DC EV Grand Prix engages our youth in the innovation economy, preparing them for the future by providing a green pathway to the middle class.”

“We are proud to support the District’s students in this regional competition that requires skill and creativity—attributes essential to their success in Saturday’s race and in the future,” said Ted Trabue, DCSEU Managing Director.

“As students are making informed decisions about higher education and future opportunities, it’s important that we support the efforts of the local schools and families we serve,” said Donna Cooper, Pepco Region President. “These young engineers and scientists will use the competition to test and refine their creations, and the results of their experiments will help determine future applications of renewable energy. We appreciate the opportunity to give back to the communities we serve.”

“This high school competition is in its third year, and we are already beginning to see the positive impact it is having on local students in their career decisions and college placements,” said Dr. Nabih Bedewi, Managing Director of Global EEE and the competition director. “We are pleased to partner with DDOE, DCSEU, USDOE, and Pepco this year and look forward to a successful and exciting race at RFK Stadium.”

WHERE: Blind Whino, 700 Delaware Ave SW, Washington D.C.

SMITHSONIAN at 8 makes a summer night even hotter with a Peruvian-style celebration at DC’s Blind Whino.

What’s chicha? It’s an urban music genre originating in Peru that combines a variety of global sounds like South American cumbias and psychedelic surf guitars with local Andean melodies. It’s also the knockout style of neon poster art that exploded as chicha bands began to make their mark in the late 60s.

Say chicha today and you’re talking about a distinct and vibrant mix of color and sound that is unmistakably Peruvian.

Experience it all as Lima’s DJ Sabroso and local favorite DJ Kristy la rAt spin chicha beats. Sample Peruvian beers and pisco cocktails at the cash bar, and get a taste of the country from local food trucks like El Fuego. Try your hand at silk-screening with Peruvian chicha poster artist MONKY.

The evening is the perfect way to whet your cultural appetite for this year’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival (June 24–28 and July 1–5), which highlights Peruvian culture on the National Mall.

Cash bar; food available for purchase.

SPECIAL FEATURES FOR VIP TICKET-HOLDERS: Exclusive early access to the event from 7 to 8 p.m., and enjoy small bites, an open bar, and a sampling of Peruvian piscos, courtesy of Macchu Pisco.

Bastille Day @ Wunder Garten
Jul 11 @ 3:00 PM – 10:00 PM

L’Enfant Café is proud to announce the 11h annual Bastille Day party, a cultural celebration of all things French, on Saturday, July 11 from 3pm to 10pm. After celebrating the 10th anniversary on Vernon St last year, the folks at L’Enfant have decided to re-locate the fête to sister venue, Wunder Garten (150 M St NE), the all new beer garden space in NoMa.

Entry to this year’s event and D.C.s biggest masquerade ball is $7. Advance ticket purchase is required and capacity is limited. Purchase online through www.lenfantcafe.com or www.wundergartendc.com. Guests will storm the Bastille via M St NE, just steps from the NoMa metro stop (Red Line).

The memorable performances have also moved to the new location, including can-can dancers, a New Orleans style brass marching band, burlesque dancers and the royal guests of honor, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.

The signature folly of the event, the world-famous ‘French Maid Relay Race,’ will take place at approximately 6pm in which racers, men and women, must each wear the risqué black and white maid costume while running back and forth across the street in order to fill a Champagne glass with soup spoons of water. Très chic! Contenders must pre-purchase a costume, with ticket purchase, before the limited supply is sold out.

Enjoy this full line up of entertainment or entertain yourself on the dance floor while listening to a host of live DJs and musical guests. Throughout the event, revelers have the option to sip on the official beer of Bastille Day, Stella Artois, or enjoy Leffe, Stella Cidre, red and white wine, and Champagne. DC Slices and Crepes Parfait food trucks will be on hand to dish out delicious snacks.

Like any good revolution, the celebration doesn’t end there. For the real Bastille Day, the team invites you back to where it all began: L’Enfant Café. On Tuesday, July 14, the French restaurant will offer happy hour from open to close, featuring $5 Stella Artois, red, white and sparkling wine, and highballs. A DJ will provide entertainment while French maids offer fantastique service (read: more entertainment)

LEnfant Café is a European-style restaurant located at 18th and U Street NW, between Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan. It is known for its casual French-influenced menu, offers a full bar, and Saturday and Sunday brunch. LEnfant is home to La Boum, a popular Saturday afternoon brunch party. With its cozy interior and an expanded sidewalk patio with flower boxes, LEnfant Caféis DC’s shortcut to Paris.

About Bastille Day

Bastille Day, the French national holiday, commemorates the storming of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July 1789 and marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille was a prison and a symbol of the absolute and arbitrary power of Louis the 16th’s Ancient Regime. By capturing this symbol, the people signaled that the king’s power was no longer absolute: power should be based on the Nation and be limited by a separation of powers.

Washington Kastles Charity Classic @ GW Smith Center
Jul 22 @ 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Some of Washington’s powerhouse politicians, newsmen and other notables will vie for the Kastles Cup while raising money for a great cause during the fourth annual Washington Kastles Charity Classic this Wednesday, July 22 at the Smith Center, located on the George Washington University campus.

Members of Congress and the national media will join the five-time Mylan World TeamTennis champion Washington Kastles for this one-of-a-kind tennis event.

Democrats, Republicans and even the Kastles will be separated into Team Stars and Team Stripes for a series of fast-paced tiebreakers. The team with the most cumulative points at the end of the final tiebreaker will capture the Charity Classic championship.

The 2014 Charity Classic ended dramatically when Representative Charlie Dent (R-PA) rallied Team Stripes to a 47-46 comeback victory, earning MVP honors along the way. Representative Dent returns this year, joining his 2014 teammates Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Representative Cheri Bustos (D-IL), ABC News’ Jonathan Karl, and former Director of the National Economic Council Gene Sperling.

Founded in 2008, the Kastles have made more than $1 million in charitable donations. The Charity Classic is an extension of those efforts with 100% of ticket proceeds benefiting Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), DC Public Education Fund, and Food & Friends. Fans can choose which organization to support when they make their ticket purchase.

“Our franchise’s founding mission has been to give back to the D.C. community, which makes the Charity Classic such a meaningful night,” said Kastles owner Mark Ein. “People who don’t agree on much can agree that tennis is the sport of a lifetime and a wonderful way to come together. Kastles players and fans are very much looking forward to this year’s event.”

Representing the Kastles at the Charity Classic are reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open mixed doubles champion Leander Paes, Top 25 doubles player Anastasia Rodionova, big-serving American star Sam Querrey, and head coach Murphy Jensen. They will be joined on the court by:

  • Representative Joyce Beatty, D-OH
  • Representative Cheri Bustos, D-IL
  • Representative Charlie Dent, R-PA
  • Representative Bob Dold, R-IL
  • Representative Jared Huffman, D-CA
  • Representative Bobby Scott, D-VA
  • Representative Kevin Yoder, R-KS
  • Senator Jeff Flake, R-AZ
  • Senator Jeff Merkley, D-OR
  • Senator Shelley Moore Capito, R-WV
  • Bret Baier, Fox News
  • Mark Ein, Washington Kastles Owner

  • Ed Henry, Fox News
  • Jonathan Karl, ABC News
  • Ben Olsen, DC United Head Coach
  • Gene Sperling, Former Director of the National Economic Council

More Charity Classic players will be announced on WashingtonKastles.com as the match approaches.

All ticket proceeds go to charity and general admission tickets cost $10 through Ticketmaster (Ticketmaster.com, 202-397-7328). VIP dinner tables, boxes and seats start at $50 and can be purchased by calling 202-4-TENNIS (483-6647).

Kastles Stadium at the Smith Center is located at 600 22nd Street NW, three blocks from the Foggy Bottom-GWU stop on Metrorail’s blue, orange and silver lines. Parking is available for $10 at four George Washington University parking garages located within three blocks of the Smith Center.
