Ice Champions LIVE @ The Gardens Ice House
Sep 15 @ 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Three-time U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and two-time Olympian Michael Weiss announced that the 9th Annual Michael Weiss Foundation “Ice Champions LIVE!” will take place on Sunday, September 15 at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD, beginning at 4:00 pm – bringing some of the brightest stars of figure skating to the Washington Baltimore area for a great cause. Tickets are now on sale at www.MichaelWeiss.org for this spectacular fundraiser, sponsored by Smucker’s and Pandora.

International superstars expected to participate include Olympic and World champion Ekaterina Gordeeva (marking her first appearance in Ice Champions Live!), as well as Bel Air, MD native Kimmie Meissner, former World and U.S. National Champion, Michael Weiss, Ryan Bradley, Adam Rippon and many other Olympic, World and U.S. National Champions (please see full list of skaters below, and watch for updates at www.MichaelWeiss.org).

Weiss, who lived in Olney, MD until high school, created this event nine years ago, each year bringing the most famous faces in figure skating to the Washington region in order to raise money for his foundation, and to further the dreams of even more local athletes with Olympic dreams.

Ice Champions LIVE! is like no other figure skating event, in large part due to the intimate setting of the venue. Weiss twists like a tornado in the air landing in front of the on-ice seats. Nowhere else can attendees experience the feel, the movement, and the actual speed of these skaters as at this exhibition. Each skater brings something different to the ice, providing an evening of chills and thrills, in a fun-filled program that has not been done except at this show.

The Michael Weiss Foundation (MWF) is a non-profit organization offering scholarships to aspiring Olympiads and currently is sponsoring 27 recipients. Knowing first hand how much it takes to get an athlete to the Olympics, Michael gives young skaters this opportunity through his scholarships so they can carry the torch for Olympics of the future. He established the Michael Weiss Foundation as a way of giving back to the sport that his given him so much.

In addition to the ice show, there will be a silent auction that features the skaters’ personal memorabilia. This silent auction also has hundreds of items both from the World Figure Skating Community as well as local artists, jewelers’, restaurants and much, much more.

The event will be held on Sunday, September 15 at 4:00 pm, at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD. Tickets are available at www.MichaelWeiss.org. LIMITED ON-ICE SEATING is available. Ticket prices range from $20-$50 with VIP opportunities – meet and socialize with some of the biggest stars in skating with the VIP package. Proceeds from the ticket sales will go to figure skating scholarships to be awarded later this year.

An “Unmentionable” Affair @ Bloomers
Sep 28 @ 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Two DC-based lingerie businesses are banding together to support women with ovarian cancer and educate their customers about this “unmentionable” disease. Join Bloomers, Belabumbum and DC-based nonprofit the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance for a special event dedicated to supporting women from top to bottom.

This September, lingerie and loungewear company Belabumbum created a special camisole and panty set in teal (the color of ovarian cancer awareness) with touches of pink to symbolize the connection with breast cancer. Women who have one of these diseases are at greater risk of developing the other. One hundred percent of the proceeds from sales of this set are being donated to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance to support our work on behalf of women with this disease.

Ovarian cancer and other “below-the-belt” diseases are not often topics of conversation, even though a woman is diagnosed with the disease every 24 minutes. An “Unmentionable” Affair will highlight this cause with a fun afternoon of shopping and socializing. Women—and men—are invited to drop by Bloomers on Saturday, September 28, to learn about “unmentionable” cancers and buy a beautiful lingerie set that benefits the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.

In addition to highlighting ovarian cancer awareness, this event will showcase women business leaders and entrepreneurs in the DC area. All three participating organizations are helmed by women and dedicated to women’s interests.

What: An “Unmentionable” Affair: Bloomers hosts a special event featuring Belabumbum’s lingerie set for ovarian cancer awareness. Guests will snack on teal cupcakes from Cake Love, browse the selection at Bloomers and learn about ovarian cancer.

When: Saturday, September 28, 2013, 1:00-3:00 pm

Where: Bloomers, 3210 O Street, NW, Washington, DC

Who: Heidi Rauch, Founder of Belabumbum; Kim Putens, Owner of Bloomers; Calaneet Balas, CEO of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance

Questions: For more information on ovarian cancer and An “Unmentionable” Affair, please visit ovariancancer.org or call Amanda Davis at (202) 331-1332.

This year’s show will have two new features: the Grand Tasting Pavilion with dozens of local restaurants and chefs sharing samples of their signature fare and the Holiday Bazaar, an entire section of the event dedicated to specialty gifts.

Those who purchase a one-day pass have the opportunity to see a rotating roster of television chefs including The Chew’s Jason Roberts; actress Debi Mazur (of Entourage) and her husband Gabriele Corcos from The Cooking Channel’s Extra Virgin; the Food Network’s Extreme Chef Terry French; cookbook author and James Beard 2012 Best Chef Southeast honoree, Atlanta’s Chef Hugh Acheson; and Grill Sergeant Brad Turner.

More personalities are conducting a variety of workshops over the weekend including Rocky Fino, author of Will Cook for Sex: A Guys Guide to Cooking; Kim O’Donnel, author of The Meat Lovers Meatless Celebrations; Marcia Friedman, author of Meatballs and Matzah Balls: Recipes and Reflections from a Jewish and Italian Life; and Monica Bhide, author of Modern Spice: Inspired Indian recipes for the contemporary Kitchen.

Amidst the live discussions and demonstrations with chefs and the rest of the impressive list of participants will be a labyrinth of vendor booths in the Marketplace featuring samples and wares from more than 200 exhibitors. Local and international specialty foods and food-related products will be for sale throughout the weekend.

Debuting this year will be the Grand Tasting Pavilion where attendees can sample favorites from a wide variety of DC area restaurants, chefs, caterers, food trucks and specialty manufacturers. Among them, Del Campo, 1789, Cedar, Bourbon Steak, Founding Farmers, The Hamilton, Thally, Fujimar and Hank’s Oyster Bar.
