Washington National Opera (WNO) celebrates its fifth season of free
opera simulcasts at Nationals Park with the M&M’S
® Opera in the Outfield performance of the
American classic Show Boat on Saturday, May 18. Gates open at 5 p.m. for “pregame” activities
for the entire family. Show Boat will be broadcast live from the Kennedy Center Opera House to
the high-definition screen at the ballpark at 7 p.m. Free seating will be available on the outfield
grass and in the stands. Registration, including a chance to win prizes, is now open at
OperaintheOutfield.org.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the festive ballpark atmosphere.

Hosted by Show Boat director and new WNO Artistic Director Francesca Zambello,
Show Boat will be broadcast live to the Nationals’ state-of-the-art HD video board, which at 4,811
square feet is among the largest in the country. Show Boat is performed in English and the
musical numbers are presented with projected English titles, making it easy to follow along with

“A Night at the Kennedy Center” on Saturday, October 12, 2013, including two tickets to the
opening night performance of The Force of Destiny, free drinks from the Kennedy Center lobby
bars, and admission for two to the post-performance Opening Night Celebration. (Registration is
encouraged but not required for admission into Nationals Park; walk-ins are welcome.) Groups of

Due to the popularity of M&M’S
® Opera in the Outfield, patrons wishing to sit on the
outfield grass will need to pick up a free wristband when they enter Nationals Park. The
wristbands (one per person) will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and will be
distributed at a table to the left of Center Field Plaza near the Family Picnic Area (at sections 141-
143) beginning at 5 p.m. Once all of the available wristbands have been claimed, an
announcement will be made over the stadium sound system and field access will be closed to
those without a wristband. Plentiful free seating will always be available in the stands throughout

Accessible seating is available throughout Nationals Park, and assistive listening devices

Next season, in May 2014, WNO will present Mozart’s classic The Magic Flute as part
M&M’S
® Opera in the Outfield. The Magic Flute is a delightful fairy tale, a fantastic adventure
filled with danger and temptation, and a profound reflection on spiritual enlightenment. Sung in
English and featuring a colorful kaleidoscope of sets and costumes by Japanese American artist
Jun Kaneko, it’s a perfect opera for the entire family. The performance date for the May 2014 live
broadcast of The Magic Flute will be announced in the fall.
The Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) revealed the line up of accomplished artists, unique aerial artistry, and engaging children’s activities for the 22nd Annual Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival taking place May 17-19 in Reston Town Center. The large, top-rated, annual juried fine arts Festival is produced by GRACE, a 501(c) 3 non-profit, whose mission is to enrich community life by promoting involvement and excellence in the visual arts. This destination style arts festival offers plenty to see, taste, hear and do – from hand crafted, one of a kind artwork, contemporary and original performances, artist demonstrations, acclaimed children’s activities, and live music.
Artists & Performing Arts Line-Up
The jurors reviewed close to 1,000 applications and selected 220 master artisans to participate representing 16 different categories, including Ceramics, Digital and Multi-Media Art, Drawing, Fiber/Textiles, Furniture, Glass, Jewelry, Leather, Metal, Mixed Media 2D, Mixed Media 3D, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Wood. Of those 220 artists 68 are from the DC Metro/Mid-Atlantic Area, with furthest traveling and/or international presence coming from California and Canada.
This year, the Reston Town Square Park will be transformed into a Family Art Park that will include the ever-popular Children’s Art Tent, a new Teen Art Tent, a Public Art project and a “Chill-Out” tent. Also new this year, face painting will be available during limited hours. Children of all ages will have fun creating art influenced by cultures from around the world. GRACE will kick off the weekend festivities with an upscale Opening Night Party on Friday, May 17 from 6:00-9:00PM. Held in the Reston Town Center Pavilion, the party is an opportunity to celebrate this annual event, while helping raise funds for GRACE’s educational programs. The party will be emceed by ABC 7 Good Morning Washington News Anchor, Scott Thuman and include live music by DC’s Blues Americana Rock showman Ted Garber, performances by Arachne Aerial Arts & In-Flight Theater, silent auction, signature cocktails, and local prominent business leaders and elected officials.

The Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation, in partnership with The Mark Hulkower Foundation is pleased to host its 2nd Annual Hulkower Tailgate Party on Wednesday, May 22nd at the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) in Washington, D.C. The Hulkower Tailgate is a cocktail party fundraiser that will include a silent auction, invited VIP guests and several NFLPA members. This high-end event brings together patients, survivors, families, doctors, advocates and special guests to raise funds and awareness for colon cancer treatment and prevention. Over 250 guests attended last year’s event raising $70,000.
The Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation and The Hulkower Foundation recently formed a partnership to help raise funds for colon cancer awareness and research to find a cure for the disease.
Nancy Hulkower formed The Hulkower Foundation in memory of her husband and prominent Washington, D.C. Attorney Mark Hulkower, who passed away from colon cancer in February 2011. He was 53 years old. He had been an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia from 1989 to 1995, where he handled a number of prominent cases, including the espionage conviction of former CIA intelligence agent Aldrich Ames. He was then a partner at Steptoe & Johnson for 16 years, where he was head of the firm’s white-collar criminal defense group and won acquittals in a number of high profile cases, including the prosecutions of former Teamsters Union president Ron Carey and former Tyco General Counsel Mark Belnick. Known for his brilliant examinations and persuasive advocacy, he was consistently recognized as one of the top trial lawyers in the country. Chris4Life and The Hulkower Foundation alliance will help expand the reach in helping raise money for colon cancer.
Silent auction items up for grabs ranges from vacation homes, spa days, dining, entertainment experiences, to autographed sports memorabilia.
Tickets to the event are $200/per person. Proceeds from the event will support The Mark Hulkower Fund at the Ruesch Center for the Cure of Gastroentestinal Cancers at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and cutting edge public awareness campaigns throughout the country.

CSA members are always welcomed free of charge to all of the farm’s renowned weekend events and receive special discounts on U-Pick produce and items in the Farm Market. To properly kick-start the festival, Tour de Fat begins with a giant bicycle parade that weaves through city streets. Each parade route is designed for people of all skill levels; everyone is welcome and colorful costumes are encouraged. For the rest of the afternoon, the stages heat up with world-class acts like Beats Antique and The Moth- True Stories Told Live and the park becomes a celebration unlike any other.
Kids of all ages can ride funky bikes, eat delicious fare, relax in the grass, and participate in games and activities such as a “Thousand Person Dance Contest”, which will determine the winner of a 2013 New Belgium Cruiser Bike. Everyone 21 and older can sample new and classic favorites from New Belgium, including the brewery’s flagship brew, Fat Tire, this summer’s seasonal, Rolle Bolle, and selections from the acclaimed Lips of Faith series.

Washington, DC’s highly anticipated epicurean festival, the annual Taste of Georgetown, celebrates its 20th year on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 11am-4pm with creative cuisine from up to 30 of the neighborhood’s best restaurants, as well as an expansive Craft Beer and Wine Pavilion and live entertainment. For the first time in the event’s history, teams led by some of Georgetown’s hottest chefs will face off, testing their culinary skill during Taste of Georgetown’s Iron Chef-style Competition judged by DC’s top food experts and media.This longstanding event in Georgetown is hosted by the Georgetown BID and benefits the Georgetown Ministry Center’s services supporting the homeless.
The only opportunity to taste one’s way through Georgetown in an afternoon, Taste of Georgetown 2013 will offer the opportunity to sample up to 60 signature dishes from 30 popular Georgetown dining spots. This year’s Taste of Georgetown includes a new emphasis on unique craft brews, transforming the signature tasting pavilion into a brew-lover’s paradise featuring an extensive variety of unique craft beers as well as wines. The annual Wisconsin Avenue tasting festival will also feature live music and jazz talents, as well as other playful entertainment and activities including a culinary showdown, a balloon sculptor and face painter.
