Gladys Knight Performs at the Strathmore @ Music Center at Strathmore
Apr 27 @ 12:00 AM – 3:00 AM

Eight-time Grammy winner Gladys Knight has packed many lifetimes into a career that has embraced gold records, sold-out concerts, film performances and most recently a spin on “Dancing with the Stars,” and on Thursday and Friday, April 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. she brings her showmanship and soul-stirring voice to Strathmore. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (301) 581-5100 or visit www.strathmore.org.

Georgia-born Gladys Knight began her ascent in music after forming The Pips with her brother and cousins, which later became Gladys Knight and the Pips. The group debuted their first album in 1960, when Knight was 16 years old, going on to achieve icon status with memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, Top 20 hits like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and the #1 smash “Midnight Train to Georgia.” Knight enjoyed another #1 hit in 1985 when she teamed with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dionne Warwick on “That’s What Friends are For.” Knight has recorded more than 40 albums over the course of her career.

Her involvement in other creative undertakings has been extensive.  In 1986, she produced and starred in the Cable Ace Award-winning “Sisters in the Name of Love,” an HBO special co-starring Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle.  That same year, she co-starred with Flip Wilson in the CBS comedy “Charlie & Co.”  Other acting roles followed on such TV shows as “Benson,” “The Jefferson’s” and “New York Undercover,” and in such television films as “Pipe Dreams,” “An Enemy Among Us” and “Desperado.” She recorded the title theme for the James Bond movie License to Kill.  In 1999, she completed a starring run on Broadway in the smash musical hit Smokey Joe’s Café.

In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame.  Knight published an autobiography, Between Each Line of Pain and Glory, in 1997, and the next year, she and The Pips were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. In 2004, Knight received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual BET Awards ceremony.

Fashion for a Cure @ The Huxley
Apr 28 @ 9:00 PM – Apr 29 @ 12:00 AM

On Sunday, April 28, Woman of the Year (WOY) candidate Roxana Muzzammel will be hosting a fashion show at the Huxley from 5 – 8 p.m. to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Spanish fashion brand Hoss Intropia will feature its designs at the show.

The fashion show, “Fashion for a Cure,” is a unique opportunity to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma society’s lifesaving blood cancer research. Funds raised will go to blood cancer research in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Today, hundreds of thousands of children are battling leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. Fashion for a Cure seeks to address this dire demographic with the support they need.

Spanish brand, Hoss Intropia will feature its collection at the show. Hoss Intropia’s philosophyrests on the concept of “intropia,” a term which comes from a combination of the words introspection and utopia.  Hoss Intropia stands for striving for a dream, a vital desire. According to this concept, Hoss Intropia is perfect as the main fashion brand for the show, because it supports the LLS dream that one day there will be a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Haute Heritage will also feature its collection. Haute Heritage is a unique and versatile women’s wear line that combines global artisan traditions with modern, sophisticated styles. Baltimore nominee for LLS’ Man of the Year campaign and award-winning designer Christopher Schafer will feature his men’s wear collection at the show also.

Charitable minded, MWOY candidate Muzzammel is no stranger to supporting LLS. In 2012, Muzzammel became involved with LLS after her father passed away from leukemia.Muzzammel participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night walk to raise money and build public awareness about blood cancers.

Presently, Muzzammel is focused on showing support in memory of her father, but also for the many children who are blood cancer survivors. This year, Muzzammel’s charitable efforts come just before her fashion show, Fashion for a Cure.

“My support goes out to those children effected by leukemia, their families and loved ones,” says Muzzammel. “By participating in the Man & Woman of the Year campaign, I hope to show my support for those young blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. I challenge the people of the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to attend this fundraiser and show their support and experience an evening of food, fashion, and fun.”
