Divas Outdoors Presents: Hairspray @ Hillwood Museum & Gardens
Jul 24 @ 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Pack your picnic and head to summer camp under the starts. Enjoy a truly Divine summer evening, atDivas Outdoors: Classic Films Under the Stars, watching John Water’s cult classic Hairspray on the Lunar Lawn at Hillwood Estate,Museum & Gardens, Friday, July 24, 2015 at 7 pm.

This high-spirited night begins with picnic spreads across the lawn, all vying for the top spot in the best picnic spread competition. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and creative and delectable picnics inspired by the sophisticated setting at Hillwood.  Additionally, dinner from Hillwood’s café will be available for pre-order. Please note Hillwood’s liquor license does not permit outside alcohol. Therefore, guests are welcome to augment their personal feast with Hillwood’s special signature champagne cocktail, beer, wine, or champagne, all available for purchase onsite.

The evening also includes strolls through the splendid gardens and the opportunity to tour the special exhibition, Ingenue to Icon: 70 Years of Fashion from the Collection of Marjorie Merriweather Post. The first exhibition at Hillwood to present Post’s full range of style, Ingenue to Icon examines how Post’s lifelong passion for objects that were exceptionally beautiful and impeccably constructed extended to her taste for clothing.

Around 8:45 pm John Water’s 1988 Hairspray will begin. The film stars Ricki Lake, as the pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad who lands a coveted role as a regular on The Corny Collins Dance Show. Her moves and her self-confidence make her a teen hero, and she becomes a proud spokesman for the Hefty Hideaway, along with her mother Edna (Divine), Tracy uses her newfound fame to fight racial segregation on the Corny Collins Show. This campy classic is sure to inspire laughter, fun and even dancing across the lawn.

The Dina Merrill Film Program and Divas Outdoors

Hillwood serves as a fitting venue for the presentation of classic films, as they and their stars recall not only a golden age of film, but also a time of grand living that was celebrated by Hillwood founder and Washington social figure Marjorie Merriweather Post. Every Divas Outdoors film had it, theatrical debut around the time that Post resided and entertained at Hillwood. Without fail a gracious host, Post added asplendid wing to the mansion after she purchased the estate in 1955 that, among other types of entertaining, allowed her to screen movies for her guests. In 2010, Dina Merrill Hartley (Dina Merrill), actress, philanthropist, and Post’s youngest daughter, made a gift to support film programs at Hillwood so her mother’s long-standing tradition could be continued.

CapitalBop Block Party @ Logan Fringe Arts Space
Aug 9 @ 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM
CapitalBop and Capital Fringe, two of D.C.’s most innovative presenters, will team up for an outdoor concert featuring a lineup of cutting-edge, dance-inducing bands at the nexus of jazz, electronic music and neo-soul. On August 9, CapitalBop and Capital Fringe present the second annual CapitalBop Block Party on the plaza outside Capital Fringe’s headquarters on Florida Avenue NE.

World-famous jazz fusion star Marc Cary (#1 Rising Star Electric Keyboardist, 2014 DownBeat critics poll) will headline with his electronic/world/jazz project Rhodes Ahead. Also on the bill are two outstanding up-and-coming DMV bands: neo-soul heavy-hitters The Moment and hip-hop/electronic experimenters Nag Champa. The Block Party is the third installment of CapitalBop’s Traveling Loft series, presented with support from the DC Commisison on the Arts & Humanities.
Cary performed with Rhodes Ahead last summer at the first CapitalBop Block Party, held during the DC Jazz Fest at the Atlantic Plumbing Lot near U Street. Since then, Rhodes Ahead has received a flood of acclaim around its recently released album, Rhodes Ahead, Vol. 2 (Motéma)The record was hailed by theGuardian as “a bracing blend of old and new steered by a strong musical character [and] laid-back cool,” and the New York Times marveled: “There isn’t much in the modern-jazz-musician tool kit that Marc Cary hasn’t mastered, but he has a particular subspecialty in the area of groove.”
For next month’s Block Party, Cary – a D.C. native who grew up playing go-go before relocating to New York and becoming a world-renowned jazz musician – teamed up with CapitalBop to assemble the lineup. Cary and the CapitalBop team chose two fresh bands gaining renown in the D.C. area. The Moment is a neo-soul group playing original compositions and renditions of pop hits, led by drummer Domo “Youngman” Lee. Nag Champa is the brainchild of D.C.-based beat producer Jamal Gray and drummer Allen Jones. In just over a year, the group has accrued a devoted following among D.C.’s most passionate music listeners.

The Block Party will take place in a warm, Sunday-afternoon setting in the courtyard at the Logan Fringe Arts Space, with drinks served at the bar. A special bourbon-and-bitters cocktail, “Honey, I’m Home,” will be available at just $9 for a pint glass. It will be an energizing, dance-inducing day of music—and an exciting way to spend a summer afternoon, whether folks are coming from brunch, from church, or just rolling out of bed.

Plus: Marc Cary will lead a free go-go/jazz master class for youth at Union Arts on the morning of Aug. 9. Info on that program is available here, and it will run from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
